por: Greg Mortenson Abril 15, 2010 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Great readingI've read many climbing books, but none of them really captured the culture of the communities surrounding the mountain like Three Cups of Tea. As noted by many other reviewers, this book is not about climbing, but rather one man's quest to build schools in remote areas of Pakistan. Regardless of your political beliefs about what is going on in Pakistan and Afghanistan, Three Cups of Tea is a well written book and definitely worth the read. Evaluación: - Must read for all agesThis is a well-written story about an amazing individual. But it is much more. Every American needs to understand more about the cultures on the other side of the world that have shaped our history since 9/11. Buy several copies, you will want to share them with friends and family! Evaluación: - Sacrifice and servingI liked this book - I will confess I prefer reading fiction but for a non-fiction book this one was one of the better ones I have read. There were chapters here and there that sort of lagged but some chapters I was racing through with great interest. I have written another review else where on this book and it is as follows: Three Cups of Tea is the true story of mountaineer Greg Mortenson and his impact in Pakistan (and later Afghanistan) by going into remote villages and building schools to educate boys and girls. There is so much more to this story ... It is an amazing and inspiring story. I admire the courage of Mortenson and the men and women who work alongside him to accomplish these feats. You will see that Mortenson and others with him know what it means to be selflessness, to sacrifice. Beyond that it is also a story of honor, courage, hope, joy, sorrow, love and commitment. The story begins in 1993 when Mortenson fails on his attempt to climb K2 and ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Amazing!Inspiring and beautifully written .... I am blown away by the tenacity, fearlessness, and selflessness exhibited by Mortenson (and everyone who helps him) as he creates opportunities for the poor and neglected to get a chance at a better life through eduction .... Eye-opening crash course in history (and heartbreaking commentary) on past and present U.S. strategies in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the Middle East. I am adding my vote to the group - BUY THIS BOOK!!! Evaluación: - Education = PeaceI resisted reading this book for some time because "everyone was reading it," and finally brought it out for a plane trip to Montana, strangely enough. I was blown away. Sure, it's written in cooperation with a guy who writes the "Sunday magazine" type stuff. No, it's not Hemmingway (who had his own issues, by the way) or Hunter S. Thompson. But the story got me in the gut. We all know that babies are not born to hate or fear. They are TAUGHT to hate and fear. The wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan will continue because they pay well. Human damage aside, who's getting rich? Not the farmers and villagers who are being bombed. It's those people, the "collateral damage" of the wars, that Greg Mortenson is trying to help. And he's doing a spectacular job of it. He is living proof that one person can do something to impact society. You can do something locally or globally. Your choice. But do something. And that's the point of this book. It costs, according ... Leer Más 2.

por: Stephenie Meyer Abril 18, 2008 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Eclipse The Twilight SagaI thought it was a good book better, i read it in one day and that never happens with me. I recommend this book to anyone who like love stories with a little danger to them. Evaluación: - Awesome. If you love or like Twilight you have to read this book. Even if you just like love books you must read this. A lot happens and its all really well tolled. Evaluación: - Drags OnI don't really understand why these books are so popular. Twilight was great but the series seems to get worse after each book. Her writing, especially in Eclipse, goes on and on and on without much action. She probably could have cut the book in half if not more, and gotten to the point. The fight scenes are weak and it took forever to go from scene to scene. Bella's entire life revolves around Edward. She's willing to give up being human, her family, her friends, Jacod--for one man? I don't think I'll read Breaking Dawn. It got bad reveiws and I can't imagine reading that many pages of nothing. Evaluación: - Whatever happened?I confess. My favorite character in Twilight was Edward. I honestly could never understand what the fuss was about Bella. Sure, she may have been smart, but she had no interests, no hobbies, doesn't do sports, and is not creative. She has absolutely no interesting quality whatsoever. How dull can one person be? Those boys may have been attracted to her but I doubt if any of them would have gone for a second date. She would have bored the living daylights out of them! In Eclipse, Bella is even more horrified of any normal social interaction than ever before, sulkier, and ungrateful. However, what really turned me off was the fact that the Edward I so liked in Twilight seems to have disappeared. Edward used to have a personality, and a sense of humor which are totally lacking in Eclipse. Where is the boy who blocked Bella's car to let Tyler ask her out, just to see her face while he laughed? Where is the endearing boy who was such a tease and got such a kick our of discovering he ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Loved ItSaw Twilight and New Moon. Evaluación: - Dracula Kindle Version ReviewDracula is one of my all time favorite vampire novels and I have thoroughly enjoyed having it everywhere I go with my kindle. Thank you amazon.com for making it available to me by kindle. Evaluación: - Boring, Wordy, RepetitiveI'm not a thriller fan and don't think I've ever watched the dracula movie all the way through so it's not surprising that I don't like this book. I'm just 80% through with this book and every page is an effort. I try to read one chapter every day (about 10 pages), but it's very easy to put down before I get to the end of the chapter. It is wordy, repetitive, boring. I hate the half-page sentences and page-long paragraphs. On the plus side, it does have a story that follows logically and doesn't have daisies blooming in January. My perception is that the theme is good vs. evil although I'm aware that there are other views. The book is sprinkled liberally throughout with bits of wisdom, and it contains numerous Biblical references. The good guys are bound by a sense of duty. Count Dracula is evil personified. I think editing it and cutting half of it out would improve it a great deal. However, it is a classic and has lasted more than a century so who am I to judge. Evaluación: - its not twilight people :)Very original. I wasnt expecting it to be good but hey it was. Hey guys its not Twilight. There is no such thing as vegeterian vamps in this book :) Evaluación: - Free book. No table of contents. So what not like you are skipping ahead or going back...This is a book that you have to read all the way through. There is no going back in case you missed something. So if you missed something six chapters ago you better book mark each chapter so you can get back to it. Good luck. 4.

por: Robert Crais Diciembre 30, 2006 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - A Good Read But ...Robert Crais has done better. One problem I have with his books is strictly a book layout/style point. I have a very hard time reading entire chapters in italic print. I forgot I'd have to deal with that before I bought this book. Afraid I won't be buying any more of his books if that style continues. Overall, I did enjoy the story. Evaluación: - Love This Series!I'm really enjoying the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike novels. This is the best one I've read todate. I've read all the other novels by Mr Crais that doesn't feature Elvis and Joe, so I decided to give this series a try and I'm glad I did. I've enjoyed them all. "Demolition Angel" was my first Crais novel and I've been a fan every since. He's definitely on my list of favorite authors. Evaluación: - The Very Best Cole/Pike BookI own all of the Crais Elvis Cole books, and have read them all at least twice (except "The First Rule" which just came out). For depth of plot, character development, action and suspense, this is hands-down the best of them all. *** Small Spoiler *** Am I the only one who thinks Elvis should have dumped that schlub Lucy and gone with Samantha? Requiem (Elvis Cole Novels)The murder of Joe Pike's ex-girlfriend, Karen Garcia, leads Elvis Cole and Joe into dangerous waters as they search for a possible serial killer. Elvis's girlfriend Lucie doesn't care for the lifestyle he keeps and there's a female detective with a crush on him. This is an entertaining story with a solid plot. The killer's identity eluded me all through the story and I enjoyed that. Evaluación: - What a Book!!!!!I have just now read the final words. I closed the book slowly, running my hands all over it, before I held it tightly to my heart for a few moments. I do that after great reads. One of the best Detective titles I`ve red. Oh, man, man, MAN.... what a book! No reader can ask for anything more, but if you`re an exception, you must read these ones: The Mysterious Affair at Styles The Secret Adversary: A Tommy and Tuppence Mystery! 5.
Great Gatsby, the (Heinemann Guided Readers) (Spanish Edition)
por: Francis Scott Fitzgerald 1992-10 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - The Doppler Effect......applied to the star rating of books. In brief, the Doppler effect addresses the perceived frequency of waves, such as a fire truck's siren, by taking into account the actual frequency, and the relative speeds of the source of the sound, and the observer. So too with books; your opinion is so often determined by your particular circumstances, perhaps rushing towards the source, or enjoying the lengthening perspective that life in its fullness can provide. Unlike so many of the now familiar 1-star reviews, written by students forced to read the book as an assignment, I first read this book, of my own free will, more or less, when I was in Vietnam, some 40 plus years ago. When you are living in a bunker, the whining of the rich, and their self-induced troubles, does not go down well, and if Amazon had existed then, the best I could have mustered would have been a 2-star rating. But a friend chided me into undertaking a second read. And I found a finely crafted novel, yes, concerning ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Great GatsbyI have yet to receive this purchase. I find this to be unacceptable. I purchased it over a month ago, and no longer need the book for my class has already read it in its entirety. Evaluación: - The Roaring Twenties4 stars means: It was a great book and I would recommend it to almost anyone. This novel best epitomizes the 1920s in New York and the U.S. as a whole. Although it starts moderately slow, as a lot of 'classics' sometimes do, at least to the modern reader, it is a engaging read with genuinely interesting and extremely complex characters. On the characters: Few novels manage to create this depth of personality in such a large number of characters over so few pages. You come to, if not like, at least be interested in the fate of everyone in the novel. Although there are very few people you could honestly root for this becomes part of the fun of the book. The party scene is a seminal moment in fiction. It is one of the best captured moments through so few words. The prose is not fluffy but well crafted and meaningful. Fitzgerald manages to illuminate deeper issues in the plot through brilliant diction and subtle analogies. This and The ... Goodnight Moon /Buenas Noches, Luna (Spanish Edition)
por: Margaret Wise Brown, Clement Hurd 1995-09 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - A Real ClassicAs a bedtime story, this children's book is universally loved for it's sheer simplicity. A perfect read to your baby book and they'll soon be reading for themselves. Colorful illustrations and easy to read words have made this a classic for years. A timeless book with broad appeal. Janice Perkins, author of Ladybug Baby Bug Evaluación: - In the Great Green RoomSome classics are past their "Best By" date (see my review of the original Curious George: The Original Curious George). Others, like Goodnight Moon, continue to offer new parents and their young children an opportunity to enjoy some quiet contemplative time together. Many read Goodnight Moon as part of a bedtime ritual; the familiar items and cadence are sweet and soothing. The New Yorker once called it a "hypnotic bedtime litany." If you need a book to settle down a young child to sleep, this is it. Nice detail: look for the tiny mouse moving all over the room as the book progresses. The brightness of each page also gradually decreases. (Kudos to illustrator Clement G. Hurd for his huge contribution to children's literature.) For interested parents, a bizarre (and sad) story by Joshua Prager of the Wall Street Journal about the nine-year-old who was the beneficiary of Margaret Wise Brown's will, and how it all went south. See Comment below for link. Leer Más Evaluación: - SOO BORING,GREY & WHITE PICS-GOODBYE MONEY!!!This book is not visually stimulating nor is there any real prose. VERRRRRY BORING and non sensical in a way that doesn't entertain like a Dr Seuss would. So disappointing after reading all the good reviews...if you really must throw away your money, send it my way. Evaluación: - Why is this Book so Highly Recommended?Goodnight Moon is a short poem meant to be read to a child before going to bed. It begins by naming all the things in a room, from "two little kittens and a pair of mittens" to "a comb and a brush and a bowl full of mush." Following this, "good night" wishes are granted to everything previously named. The illustrations match the book's purpose wonderfully. For example, a bright green room greets the child at book's start and then gets progressively darker. Goodnight Moon is not the only bed-time storybook, but it is one of the most highly recommended for a good reason. The book prepares a child for bed in the best way possible: it gives him the comforting reassurance that everything is in its place and all is well--in his room and in the world outside Evaluación: - a true classicI don't think anyone can go wrong with ordering this book. It is a true classic that every child needs read to them during their early developmental years. 7.

Evaluación: - This is truly the miniature version.Lovely book. Fabulous story. Great pictures. DON'T buy this version though. You really will need glasses to read it. Evaluación: - Crisp, colorful classic keeps charming and educatingThis charming concept book introduces counting and the concept of life stages of a butterfly. The caterpillar, which is very hungry, eats through several different fruits. The pop ups of the fruits have holes punched in, so, there is sensory manipulation for the little ones, in addition to the depiction of fruits on the several pop up pages, inviting them the explore the idea of numbers. Sense of progression is there, as the eating-through happens during several days, and also at the end the caterpillar eats through junk food in a huge amount, and feels bad.Slight touch of humor, and also opportunity for parents to explain a little bit about good nutrition. But at the and there is cocoon stage, and of course transformation in a beautiful butterfly. This maybe not so correct among most the butterflies, but happens seldom, (more among mots), still, there is a kind of butterfly which goes through this stage, so, the science is not totally incorrect, just doesn't apply to the majority of butterflies.the scientific ... Beautiful illustrations in a fun layout that still entertains adults while making little ones want to turn each page to see what that caterpillar might have eaten next -- and all the while they are learning how to count! Brilliant!! This is a gift choice that I always return to when one of my friend's babies becomes a toddler! Thanks to this book i am no longer the negative unhappy person i am as i have learnt a lot to let go of things that happened in the past and to not let it affect every decision, every relationship or every step i make or take in the present moment. Evaluación: - .5 StarsI wish you could give zero stars but I would actually give it half a star because if the book did anything it made me understand the person who purchased this for me (I will use the name Anna) and their point of view. In Anna's own words, by following Hay's belief system which is the basic mind over matter concept on steroids with a sprinkle of plutonium grade narcissism thrown in, she has serious problems feeling empathy. Empathy for others being something I would not trade for a completely healthy body. I was given the book when I called Anna to tell her that my medical situation had changed and I was back to a pre-cancerous stage. This is after many years of remission gained through a variety of Western and Eastern Medicine. I had just found out and was making arrangements for the necessary procedures and panicked and looked for support... in the wrong place. The Stand (Spanish Edition)
por: Stephen King 1999-09 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Read it 3 times!!I'm an avid King fan and this is by far my favorite book. I read it as a teenager and reread it a couple of years ago rediscovering this "apocalyptic" tale. Evaluación: - Good, but other SK is betterFor the record I read the unabridged version so I am not commenting on the other version that was a slightly different story. I liked the book for the most part. However, it is like reading two different books. The first half is very scientific and feels like a SK book. The second half feels someone else wrote it. It is not bad persay, but it just feels like the story goes from a scientific based novel and how humanity would react to something like this to this weird story about good versus evil that just does not flow well. I would still recommend it and if you can find it on TV or DVD watch the movie version The Stand. It helps clarify a few parts, but also shows how the flow of the second half of the book is. It was written and produced by SK. Look for him in a few cameo spots. He looks different without his glasses. Evaluación: - ONE OF THE GREATEST BOOKS OF ALL-TIME!The Stand can stand alone as a testament through time. The engrossing novel has it all and then some: absorbing characters, a creepy setting and dreamscape, the baddest villain imaginable, all plot-driven by the master himself. It's one of those stories that people should definitely read. Another one readers should like is Final Outcome: An Apocalyptic Mystery Thriller. Evaluación: - A good extension of a very good book.I'm not sure I understand all of the negative reviews that come at this book from a length angle-- hey, it's a LONG FREAKING BOOK, didn't you notice that when you bought it??? I thought the added description was great, that is, after all, why I bought this extended version. I am not a rabid King devotee (I've only read about 4 of his books), but I really enjoyed the book when I read it about ten years ago-- enough to buy the author's-- this second-- version. I though this version did a great job expanding the characters and DEFINITELY a good job explaining Trashcan Man (otherwise I was pretty much just "huh" about his character). I guess the reason I stick with a 4 star rating is that I thought the ending just didn't measure up. I know, I know (she says, ducking hurled rotten veggies from those of you who gave the book a 5) but it just felt, well, appended, somehow. I don't mean the part of the ending where (SPOILER!!! SPOILER COMING!!!!!) Stuart and Fran go off to start lives of their ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Not a strong 3 star either!NUTSHELL: I was not VERY impressed with this book. It was VERY LONG (now see why shorter versions are available). It was not bad, but to me it never really seemed to pick up! In all honesty, I might have been easier on this book had I not heard so many people claim it was King's masterpiece. Not a bad book, but not very exciting in my opinion. 5 outta 10 MORE DETAIL (no spoilers): I have heard time and time again that "The Stand" was when Stephen King peeked..etc, etc. I do not think that it was bad, but I really do not see what all the hype was about. The characters are unforgettable like in most King books, but once I really thought the ball was going to start moving it never really built up momentum. I might be being a little hard on this book because I had heard it talked up sooo much. Every once in a while I come across a movie, song, or book that everyone loves, but I just dont get.. :/ Unfortunately, the Stand was one of those for me. 10.

por: Charlotte Bronte 1998-06 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Jane EyreGot it to give as a valentines gift, but ended up keeping it! Very beautiful. Classic Evaluación: - A treasureI wanted to read Jane Eyre since a long time but couldn't make myself do it. Firstly, because I find classics really difficult to read. Secondly, it's too long. The 490 pages copy I have has very small font and everything is kind of crowded with the next chapter starting on the same page the previous one ends. So when I picked up the book to read I was expecting a very difficult read. But the first 100 pages were a breeze. *contains spoilers* Jane Eyre is an orphan who is living with her aunt, who is not a very compassionate woman, nor are her cousins. She suffers a lot in that house. Jane is a spirited girl, she believes she should be treated fairly and even knows there is injustice in the way her Aunt and her cousins treat her. She also believes in speaking her mind. The Aunt gets tired of her and sends her to an orphanage school at the age of 10 where she spends the next 8 years of her life.' I loved the life she described in the school. This section I found very similar to ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Classic Must ReadThis is one of my all time favorite books. A must read for anyone who enjoys this period. Evaluación: - FlawedIt seems that the basic purpose of the character Jane Eyre is to suffer nobly and then eventually succeed. Both elements are highly problematic as presented. Her noble suffering acts to undermine her actual character, making someone that reacts the same to most of the challenges--stoic, determined, largely silent, resigned. This required attitude makes her too much of a blank slate, too reactive, with insufficient personal details to be memorable or seem like a complex psychological portrait. One gathers that Bronte was trying to subvert common norms in representation of woman, by making Jane a lot plainer and less accomplished than was the usual style. She may have made a major improvement in this, and as discussed below there are some interesting elements to all this, but the basic result undercuts the character's agency too much. Jane can work as a symbol, she does not work as a person, and the novel is too deeply linked to her consciousness for that to be a passable loss. As well there are major pacing ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Tragic, beautiful, and romantic, a classic!I love this book! It's one of my all-time favorites. It resonated so well with me when I first read it as a teenager. How to be true to yourself, independent, and make the best of your life no matter the circumstances. And of course, the romance between Mr. Rochester and Jane was so beautiful. I wanted someone to love me like that one day! I love how she was able to stand up for herself to Mrs. Reed her cruel aunt, the evil Mr. Brocklehurst, her self-righteous and controlling cousin St. John, and even her beloved Mr. Rochester when he would have her go against her moral fiber. It was wonderful to learn more about Charlotte and her life and how much shows up in her novel. It made this reread even better! |
