Long ago I had watched this movie and I was enthralled. It wasn't the best movie by any means (in fact I rented it and found that it matched the book closer than most movies do but it wasn't near as good as I remembered it), but the character invoked in each person was amazing. I wanted to read this book, and eventually stumbled on it used and took my chances that this was the same book as the movie I remembered.
It was. And then some. Allende does an absolutely wonderful job in bringing her characters to life and instilling such a deep sense of richness and fullness that you feel you know each character. Their actions are believable and real, even when they are doing something a bit out of the ordinary (Clara). You don't doubt that floating vases and seeing into the future actually happened. You just believe it.
The story is just as rich as we see an epic tale of a family and the interactions that they all have on one another, the dynamics of the main characters and especially the dynamics of the supporting characters. I couldn't wait to get back and continue reading Allende. She reminds me a lot of Gabriel Garcia Marquez in a very positive way.
And to think that this was her very first novel. Simply amazing and Allende has a fan in me. I cannot wait to read another by her. A recommend most definitely.

This book, especially the material/chapter on processing emotional pain, is the best I have ever read. The Christian Church is in major trouble in its refusal to obey the book they profess so loudly and passionately to follow, but don't. They talk a lot, but do little walking of that talk....and they are always way to anxious to ask you ( the victim...of abuse from your parent or spouse, etc etc) "have you forgiven them?" before you have even had a chance to deal with the pain. There's a big story behind this huge problem of insisting on "leap frogging" over the pain piece after you have been hurt by someone....and the church really needs to read what this book has to say about that problem, in a really big way. I cannot recommend this book too highly. I've read many many psych books over the years and this is one of the very best. Now....if only the Christians would read it and practice it...it only "points up" what the "good book" has said for the last 2000 years and the church has arogantly refused to obey. Is that what they call hypocrisy?????

Creo que construimos la vida de dentro afuera. Y, hasta cierto punto, podemos influir en lo que nos rodea mediante una actitud positiva y ESFUERZO. Esta última palabra, junto con otras, como DISCIPLINA, están desapareciendo a marchas forzadas de nuestro vocabulario. Son como esas especies animales que se extinguen día a día en nuestros bosques. En su lugar han ido reapareciendo otras especies del pasado: animales mitológicos, mágicos, genios de la lámpara de Aladino, que nos garantizan la felicidad con solo soñar un poquito. Y sin estresarse, ¿eh?
Panfletos como El Secreto, nos advierten del peligro de considerar siquiera lo negativo. Si alguien lo está pasando mal, nuestro deber es cerrar los ojos. Al fin y al cabo es su culpa. La compasión es un error, nosotros debemos preocuparnos por nuestra prosperidad (DINERO) y así, de paso, les mostraremos el camino a los otros. Me parece una filosofía de lo más superficial. De lo más egoísta y estúpido. Es la superstición que no nos ha dejado nunca. Es Peter Pan diciendo "tú puedes volar si piensas pensamientos bellos". Mandrake el mago, haciendo un pase mágico.
En cuanto al "libro", es una colección de citas y cuentos convenientemente arreglados para darnos una moraleja; eso sí, con un envoltorio cuidadísimo. Tipo Walt Disney. Creo que en futuras ediciones le podían añadir un sombrero de pico y una varita. Por lo que respecta a los "escritores" (la mayoría, como Joe Vitale, con doctorados falsos) son el moderno equivalente a esos charlatanes que iban vendiendo elixires milagrosos por los pueblos en los tiempos del salvaje Oeste.
Si alguien está interesado en saber sobre New Thought (El Nuevo Pensamiento, que es en lo que se basa este librillo), le recomiendo que lea a Ernest Holmes, sobre todo Creative Mind and Success, quizá también él esté hablando de magia. Pero de una magia mucha más profunda y humana.

Its more than just a charistmatic experience but rather getting to know a friend, that friend being God. If Jesus died to be with me, that way that I commune with Him, is through the Holy Spirit.

I am not a teen anymore, but a decade ago, I was. I never went to a public school, or delt with teenage dating, drugs, suicide, sneaking around, or all of that drama. I purchased this for a special teen in my life who has had to go to public school and face all of that. I read it before I gave it to her, and I think I learned some things that enter into the "average teen's" life. I hope she enjoys it, and learns, laughs and grows as I did.
