Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Didn't know he was that scary
See what happens when you don't read the classic first? This guy is really ugly and evil, not like the vamp of today. I think I like the classic better.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Should have read years ago!
As a bibliophile I should have read this a looooong time ago! As it was a free book I downloaded it for Kindle. Once I started I couldn't put it down! Good stuff!

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Different than I expected
My only experience with Dracula has been with movies, so my expectations were entirely different. I found the novel very enjoyable and found the style to be interesting; it gave me a way to see the story from several points of view. I had expected more of the story to take place in Dracula's castle instead of most of it taking place in London.

This is the first novel that I read on my kindle and I have already started reading several other books on it. It is a good way to go through books and is easy on the eyes.

This free edition is basically text with no table of contents or links, but for a novel that is fine with me. The Kindle search function allowed me to do a search for `chapter' and I was able to create my own table of contents. I always like to know roughly how long a chapter is when I read and this was a very simple way to find out.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - enjoy a classic
Although I've read a number of vampire books (some of Laurell Hamilton's, 'Salems Lot, Twilight, Vampire Diaries, LeStat, etc.), I had never read "the original". I enjoyed the different perspectives in the book and even the dialogue (although occasionally it was hard to know what some of the more archaic phrases meant at first). Enjoy a good read (plus, it's FREE!)

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Digitial diaries, haunted expansions, and three little women so seemingly helpless
Wireless - I suppose that is what I should comment on first. The wireless words of an undead "man" as he looks into the eyes of something he thought lost forver. The screen loves this book as do I and, honestly, I cannot fault it in the least. I can take this story into the most horrible of places for atmosphere, reading it by its own light in th emidst of a catacomb of horrible things. Once a year we read to the dead anyhow and, finding solace in that, I take along books like these. The person i read to out there liked horror in their life so, with this Kindle, I can strike up the mood and strike up the print, knowing this makes the most of the book.

As far as the book, I figure most know it is some way. Mina, Johnny-boy Harker, Van Helsing, The HMS (it should have been called dead bodies), land ownership, Tesla Coils; there are so many visuals that people already have. The beauty of this book is not just in the way that people have seen it, however, but it the way that you ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Dracula
As an Author myself (The Q-ube ) which has a moderate amount of intrigue and games, its wonderful to read Bram Stoker's Dracula. As it is so complex, its also the first book that presents the unsuspecting world with the creepy and scary concept of a blood-sucking creature. Never could Bram Stoker have imagined the impact his book would have made. Its still the best horror book on vampires ever written, and is now classic literature.I have read this book more than once and i each am time i find each a wealth of information, that i missed before. It really is the kind of book you have to read more than once to fully comprehend the striking characteristics of Count Dragul. I recommend this masterpiece highly.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - "For the dead travel fast"
Surprisingly "Denn die Toten reiten schnell" or "For the dead travel fast" is more than an opening line to this tale of love in the dangerous moon light. After watching several Drac movies and a few Nosferatu's, I pretty much though I had a handle on the genera. Little did I know what a wonderful world of mystery and suspense that Bram Stoker opened up for me.

The story is told mostly third party though the papers, diaries, and phonograph recordings (on wax calendars) of those people involve in a tale so bizarre that it almost defies belief. The general story line is that of a Count that plans to move to a more urban setting (from Borgo Pass to London) where there is a richer diet. There he finds succulent women; something he can sing his teeth in. Unfortunately for him a gang of ruffians (including a real-estate agent, asylum director, Texas cowboy and an Old Dutch abnormal psychologist) is out to detour his nocturnal munching. They think they have Drac on the run but with ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - I longed to give this more stars but, in critical fairness,I could not
Count Dracula from Transylvania is probably one of the most--if not THE most--popular character to come out of fiction due, in large part, to his continual reinvention by Hollywood over the last century. While Bram Stoker is to be credited for his invention, I have to say that I have mixed feelings regarding its execution.

The first third of the book, which contains the account of Jonathan Harker's visit to and escape from Castle Dracula, is easily the best, with a high creepiness factor. (In one part, Dracula delivers a sack to the three female vampires that reside with him. The sack has a whimpering child inside it. Pretty intense stuff for the fiction of 1895, perhaps even for today.) Harker interacts with Dracula often and, when not doing so, observes the strange behavior of his host or explores the castle he's been locked within. So far, so good.

Once Dracula departs for England, the novel nearly slams on its own brakes. After the wreck of the Demeter ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Put down the King and Koontz - this is the master
Stoker's Dracula has been the most influential horror novel for a number of reasons - it is incredibly full of creativity, backed with incredible realism, and in very believable 'voices.'

I read it for the second time in my life as an adult over the Halloween season, and I can not recommend this enough. Though it was written at the end of the 1800s, it is very easy to read while providing an atypical sense of surroundings and realism. Few books, let alone horror books, are as well conceived, and modern horrors seems 'crap' compared to this.

The biggest reason to hesitate is that you have already been exposed to so many versions of vampires and even of dracula that you may think you will fail to find new entertainment here. That may be true, but I found that I had forgotten most of the details and surprised with the amount by which I got into each character's perspective.

Put down the King and Koontz! That is, at least until you have read this one ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - For such an old collection of works, the chills and thrills are timeless!
I thought I was reading a sequel of the original Dracula book, but was surprised to find a collection of chilling and poignant stories. I have since quoted several of these to friends and co-workers due to their very modern message and the fears they still exploit.

A great find for the Kindle!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Scary and very entertaining
An intrepid English traveler will let no superstition stand in his way, even when he is warned most strenuously by the locals. Indeed, to show how unafraid he is, he walks down to a village that was disserted when it became to home of the living dead. In the center of the old cemetery he finds a massive old tomb, and seeking shelter from a storm he goes inside. What he finds inside will shake his modern rationalism to its very foundations!

This short story was actually written by Bram Stoker as the first chapter to his magnum opus, Dracula. The editor apparently decided that the chapter was superfluous to the rest of the book, and cut it. Well, I don't doubt that the chapter was unnecessary to Dracula, but the fact is that even cut off as it is, it makes a very good short story!

Indeed, as a fan of the old Dracula, I must say that I was quite pleased to find another Bran Stoker story that involved the great vampire. I found the story to be scary and very entertaining. ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Very Good!
Dracula's Guest is a collection of short stories by Bram Stoker which includes: Dracula's Guest, The Judge's House, The Gipsy Prophecy, The Coming of Abel Behenna, The Burial of the Rats, A Dream of Red Hands, Crooken Sands, and The Secret of Growing Old. In Dracula's guest, you follow a young Englishman who is in a town and on Walpurgis Night leaves his carriage to wander off and see an abandoned village. The village was deemed unholy which sparked his interest to begin with. While there, he sees a tomb and tries to take cover in the doorway while there is a terrible storm. Later he is found by some military men. They say they went to search for him because they had received word from his host Dracula that he may have been lost. It is rumored to have been Jonathan Harker before his visit with the count, but that is not certain.

My next favorite was the story of the Judge's House. It has a young scholar who is seeking some peace and quiet and rents a house that locals feel is bewitched. ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - A True Classic!
Bram Stoker is an author that should be remembered. This book is even better than Dracula!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - One of Stoker's best
I consider this to be one of Stoker's best books. I would rate it right up there with "Dracula" and "The Jewel of the Seven Stars". The short stories in this collection are great. I especially liked the stories `Dracula's Guest' (which is supposed to be an exercised chapter from Dracula) and `The Judge's House'.

The nine stories in this collection are:

Dracula's Guest
The Judge's House
The Squaw
The Secret of the Growing Gold
A Gipsy Prophecy
The Coming of Abel Behenna
The Burial of the Rats
A Dream of Red Hands
Crooken Sands

If you enjoyed "Dracula" you should definitely read this book.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Well...it was free
Although a bit strange I found this book to be entertaining. It follows Adam as he battles the mysterious Lady Arabella, falls in love with Mimi, And encounters an assortment of odd characters. Not as good as Dracula, but if you can handle the far-fetched plot I would recommend it. Also, It is free.

Evaluación: 2 out of 5 stars - Hmmmm, Not what I was expecting
Vague memories of a movie had me try this one. One of my least favorites as I read through my free kindle books. I kept hoping he was joking. I heard how acceptable racism was but this was my first encounter. Couldn't quite get past it.

Story definitely not worth digging through the rants against the "savage", Silly book altogether.

Evaluación: 2 out of 5 stars - Past its prime and victorian to boot!
I don't especially care for scary movies or books, so I've avoided this book over the years. However, with the preponderance of vampire lit in our culture I thought I'd finally crack the binding of this book. I didn't find it particularly spine-chilling or evocative-- perhaps I'm deadened to such paltry imagery summoned here compared with our modern mediums. Still, the plot was decent and as the progenitor of so much culture within the hoi polloi it is consistent with the recommendation of a must read.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Reads Better Than Most Modern Horror
Please read this instead of these wonky modern vampire books. Although it was written in the 19th century it flows in a modern way and the first 50 pages are the best opening of any book in horror history.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Before Twilight....
Long before Twilight, Team Jacob and Team Edward, before Sookie Stackhouse and the Vampire Diaries or Lost Boys, there was the classic thriller Dracula. However, unlike the super sexy vampires of today, Dracula is a true enemy of people. His origins are downright demonic, and you don't want to meet him in a dark wood. So if you want to see where the excitement started, sit down with Bram Stoker and his dark creation. I did and had some nightmares as a result.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Good and Creepy
Much to my surprise Dracula delivers on the creeps and holds up very well for the modern reader. Back in 1897 it must have really scared the pants off people even though they had to trudge through some of the endless dialogue of people congratulating themselves (how do they remember so much from a conversation and write it down word for word).

The first third of the book, when Jonathan Harker travels to and stays in Dracula's castle, did deliver a good creepy mood and some genuine scares that flirted with disturbing.
The wonderful descriptions of the countryside, the people met, and the eventual ascent to Dracula's castle were so effective at setting a mysterious mood that the reader is very concerned for Jonathan well before he even meets the count. Once the count appears the fun at the castle really starts.

The second part of the book introduces us to Lucy Westenra and the cast of characters that will lead us through the rest of our journey. The scares are toned ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - It's nothing like the movie.
Y'all ,this book is a little spooky, a little bloody, but still tons of fun. (Not unlike myself.) It's about this count who is a polygamist (which sounds like it rocks!) and when his wives do what he tells them to do he rewards them with a meal of human babies (I KNOW! But, "whatever works in a marriage," I always say. "To each his own!") There's some folks who don't like him and that's when all the meshugas starts. Oy! I can't even begin to tell you all that happens. Just read it. It's super good. DRACULA. He's immortal, and he plans to stay that way. I gave it a buncha knishes on The Gilda Sue Rosenstern Computer Internet Show's segment that I love to call "Used Book Club." Check it out!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Simply a classic
Great book, Great Read! Any fan of horror should read the original!

P.S. - DO NOT READ the supposed "sequel" by Dacre Stoker & Ian Holt, it is quite terrible...

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Chilling but not too scary
This book isn't for the die-hard horror readers. Yes, the scare factor is high enough to give a few shivers (and that is plenty good enough for me) but it's not terrifying or gory. What makes it scary is the creepiness. Also, the story is written through a collection of letters, notes, and the like by various characters. This style of writing makes the story considerably more intriguing. All in all I recommend the book to anyone.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Original
It is staggering to think of how many books and literary careers are rooted in the original publication of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Far from a perfect novel, it is a classic in the horror genre and is still capable of frightening unsuspecting victims today.

The text is composed of a series of journals. Credit for pasting these journals together in this fictional account is not given. Jonathan Harker's journal through his original visit to Dracula'a castle begins the book. After this initial sequence the serialization comes from several voices including Dr. Van Helsing, John Seward, and Arthur Godalming. The female victims, Lucy Westerna and Mina Murray-Harker, also act as voices, though of varying quality.

The overall plot is generally well-known, though the actual sequence of events may not be known. By contemporary standards, the plot does move somewhat slow. This is not a blockbuster of non-stop action. Many of the pages are in place to establish the conflicts that ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - This is how you write a horror story
To Stephen King and Dean Koontz, if you ever wonder why the literary world doesn't take your works seriously, even though you two have sold millions of books worldwide, read Bram Stoker's Dracula. That is how you write a horror story -- no time travel, no alternate universe, no alien beings. Dracula is just a suspenseful yarn and filled its readers with creeping dread as the story progresses, and the hunger to learn more. It was great fun reading it.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Mother of All Vampire Stories
Confession time: I read the entire "Twilight" Saga before reading "Dracula." I know, I know especially embarrassing considering I majored in 19th Century British Lit in college. However, this glaring deficiency in my literary repertoire has been remedied and I can now emerge from my cloud of shame. I really did enjoy this book and since everyone else in the world has likely already read it, I do not feel it necessary to go into all of the plot details. Here is the short version without spoilers: when Count Dracula decides to expand operations to London after centuries of being relegated to Transylvania, it becomes problematic for British mortals. Luckily there is a group of people, captained by Professor Van Helsing, who make it an objective to eradicate the vampires from society.

I found "Dracula" a surprisingly quick read for a 400 page book and can understand how it made a splash in Victorian England. However, there are a number of grammatical errors and typos in the text that did hinder ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Accessible and atmospheric, although the narrative style has its weaknesses. A fundamental vampire novel, and highly recommende
When Jonathan Harker visits Transylvania to arrange for an English home purchase for Count Dracula, he becomes a prisoner in Dracula's castle and discovers horrific and unnatural facts about Dracula himself. Not long after, strange events occur in England--a unmanned ship beaches on shore, a madman awaits his master, and a young woman with unexplained puncture wounds on her neck becomes pale and ill. These events bring together a diverse cast of characters who tell the story through their diaries and letters and work to understand and to defeat Dracula. The diary-style narrative, although contrived and somewhat frustrating, makes the book accessible and swift flowing, and the book is of course a rich, classic horror text and a foundational vampire novel. Recommended to all readers, including those that don't generally read classics.

A horror classic, Dracula is both an atmospheric, foundational vampire novel and an accessible, swiftly flowing text. The narrative is composed of a number of chronologically ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Enduring Gothic
Each generation finds something to enjoy in this ever-popular gothic novel, whether it's just thrills, a fascination with the Victorian mind, or its many sexual and psychological undercurrents. Whether in this enduring original or its myriad offspring, the mysterious Count lives on.

The compelling subject matter, the interesting characterizations, and the suspenseful plot account for whatever claim this novel makes on being a "classic." Certainly it isn't the style. There isn't a graceful sentence in the entire book. For this reason Dracula remains more an entertainment than a work of art, but that shouldn't prevent any prospective reader from experiencing this wonderful tale.

This edition is handsome and includes a number of interesting accompaniments, including Stoker's fan letter to Walt Whitman.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Read Freely and of Your Own Free Will!
This year is the 110th anniversary of the publication of Dracula. Dracula, or Count Dracula, is probably the most famous vampire of them all. After one hundred years, Dracula is so ingrained into vampire mythology that when we think vampires - we think Dracula.

You could argue that the reason for this began with F.W. Murnau's film Nosferatu. Although the main character, wonderfully portrayed by Max Schreck, is referred to as Count Orlok - the viewing public were not fooled! Thousands of fans knew Murnau was telling the Dracula story! And so began a phenomenon, Dracula is now the most portrayed character in the horror genre - beating the likes of Frankenstein - and notching up over 160 portrayals. Most notable of these, apart from the previously mentioned Max Schreck, include those by: Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee and, more recently, Gary Oldman.

So, does this explain the unbelievable success of the Dracula novel? Are the scores of portrayals serving as huge advertising campaigns? Is this the ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Tales of blood
The legends of vampires have been with us for thousands of years, but it wasn't until the 19th century that they started to resemble the sleek, elegant immortals we now know and love. "Three Vampire Tales: Dracula, Carmilla, and The Vampyre" brings together the three classic stories that shaped modern vampire fiction -- although "The Vampyre" isn't exactly horrific.

Bram Stoker's "Dracula" deals with a young real estate agent, Jonathan Harker, going to Transylvania to finalize a deal with the mysterious Count Dracula. Soon he discovers Dracula's true nature, but not before the wily vampire is able to smuggle himself to England -- and not only kills the innocent Lucy Westenra, but seems to have marked Harker's new wife Mina as his next victim. The quest to save her will bring together a motley band of brothers, led by the vampire-killing Van Helsing.

J. Sheridan Le Fanu's novella "Carmilla" involves a young woman who becomes the houseguest of Laura and her father. Carmilla immediately takes a very, ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - The Great 19th Century Vampires & Their Antecedents.
"Three Vampire Tales" is a collection of 19th century vampire literature that follows the increasing popularity of vampires in English literature, from Lord Byron's 1812 poem, "The Giaour", to the culmination of that century's vampire tales in Bram Stoker's 1897 gothic horror novel "Dracula". The three featured stories are: John Polidori's "The Vampyre", the first vampire short story in English, published in 1819; "Carmilla" by Irish writer Sheridan Le Fanu, published in 1872 as part of Le Fanu's "In a Glass Darkly" collection; and Bram Stoker's mythic 1897 novel "Dracula". All three works are included in their entirety.

"The Vampyre" concerns a taciturn, enigmatic vampire called Lord Ruthven, and Aubrey, a young naive aristocrat, who is at first pleased to have Ruthven as a traveling companion. In the course of their adventures on the Continent, Aubrey comes to understand Ruthven's predatory character. But Ruthven requests an oath of secrecy on his deathbed, to which Aubrey agrees, only to find himself in a dire ... Leer Más

There was John Polidori's The Vampyre and Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla. This book has all THREE plus chapters that trace early appearances of vampires in literarty works and chapters that focus on Stoker's research into and his creative use of vampire sources. Also the cancelled chapter never used in Dracula, called "Dracula's Guest", which is a story all by itself. To wrap up the book there is a list of vampire films, listed by year, in the back. Very detailed, very complete - perfect as a gift or just an addition to any vampire library.

Dracula is a classic that is worth the price of admission by itself. But when you add Carmilla, Vampyre, and the other little extras then it becomes a must buy for any fantasy or vampire fan. Pick it up. You wont be sorry.
