por: Charlotte Bronte Abril 01, 2003 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - speedy and in good conditionMy order got to me very quickly and in better condition than I was expecting. Evaluación: - Wonderful, amazing bookJane Eyre is quite possibly my favorite book ever. And maybe also the best. Of course I've thought each of those things about other books, but very rarely both about the same book. I love this book without any reservations and think it is incomparable. I can't imagine any kind of person who wouldn't enjoy Jane Eyre. Read it. Evaluación: - Woman of Great ImportanceJane Eyre is a masterpiece. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The protagonist, Jane, is narrating her biography, and the chronicle commences when she was ten years old, growing up with her cruel aunt and equally cruel cousins, who make her childhood miserable. She could hardly wait to get out of their grip to a school for orphanages, run by a saintly woman. There she befriends a girl, Amy, a noble and true friend, dying of consumption. Jane thrives in the school, later becoming a teacher for two years. But the real drama unfolds when she gets a job as a tutor for a young girl, Adel, a protege of Mr. Rochester, a wealthy bachelor. They fall in love and Mr. Rochester proposes marriage. But he forgets to tell Jane a minor point that he was already married to a insane woman, locked up in the same manor! Jane bolts home and a new adventure unfolds, meets her long lost cousins, finds enormous fortune and dodges her cousin's advances to marry and go on to India to preach! ... Evaluación: - One of my favoritesOne of my favorites. I read it at least once a year. I can never decide if I like Rochester and if I want Jane to end up with him. But the language is beautiful. 2.

por: Jean Rhys, Charlotte Bronte 1999-01 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - If You Want To Be Depressed, Read This BookExcellently written, but with the outcome already known, this book shows the nightmarish life of Antoinetta "Berthe" Mason, Edward Rochester's doomed bride. Rochester himself is a doomed soul, as he has no idea of how to deal with the brightly colored tragedy of his early marriage. Antoinetta needs major therapy from page one, and Rochester is the proper English gentleman who is corrupted and broken in a thousand ways, for he has no idea of the disaster he has been lured into. We already know Anakin is going to be Vader, and now we know how Rochester and Bertha turn to the Dark Side. Gee, thanks. Can I have those hours back, now? Skip the prequels, and just enjoy "Jane Eyre". Evaluación: - Devastating StoryAntoinette has a tough childhood. She is a white child living in Jamaica when the slaves are freed. Her family is ostracized and in danger. Her mother eventually remarries and they leave their family home in flames, burned by the angry and vengeful people of the village. Years later, Antoinette is married to a man she's never met. On their honeymoon to Dominica, her husband starts to feel uneasy about their marriage. He doesn't like the overgrown environment of Dominica, and he really doesn't like the black servants working for them, especially Christophine, who was a slave of Antoinette's family when Antoinette was a child. He finds out distressing information about his wife's family and blames her for the position in which he feels stuck. As revenge, he withholds all love and affection from his wife, and calls her crazy until she becomes so. Antoinette is moved into the attic of her husband's home in England, where she lives out her days under guard and slips ... Leer Más Evaluación: - An answer to Empire, and perhaps a sliver of light on HaitiThis is a deceptive book--at first glance it appears much shorter and more accessible that its putative motivator and predecessor, Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre." But the novel is fragmented, impressionistic, a pastiche of dreams and shifting viewpoints from inscrutable narrators. It's not at all an easy story to grab on to, yet it contains passages of undeniable evocative power, ranging from the Dionysian seductiveness of the tropics to the hysteria of a land in oppression and revolt. The reader who stays with the story--not once but two or three times--will be amply rewarded by an author capable of suggesting so much more than what appears on the surface. Rhys conveys the island culture, exposes its people and classes, but she also penetrates the psyche of a proud and brutal British colonist as well as the inner realm of fear and desire belonging to his prey: a woman and a culture in flux, both more wronged against than the other way around. The reader looking for ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Prisoner of the mind and historyThis short and exquisite novel is a study of manners, race and culture. It is not only about the restrictions of marriage and English culture but the wounds and mistrust lingering in the minds of the colonized and the slaveholding classes. Miss Rhys grew up in the West Indies, mother was Creole, her father Welsh, and it is doubtless that she saw and felt these contradictions. She describes with such poignancy and economy the beauty and newness of the forested island, the always-inhabited shadows of night, the lush and almost hard green of the tropics and the shock that florid life presents to English eyes. The newly-emancipated and dirt-poor blacks who serve the whites and the fearful English 'youngest son' who marries the innocent girl (for a price) confront one another. They are prisoners on this island, having no money, no status, no safety, suspect the others' motives and seem not quite human to each other. The feeling that one can lose one's footing at any moment is skillfully hinted ... Leer Más Evaluación: - WowWow is all I can say after reading this book. The treatment of the so-called "mad woman" makes me soo mad! But this review is just about the Norton Critical Edition. Let me first say that you have to read Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre before you read WSS. This version of the book is bigger than the original version, but the notes provided at the bottom of the pages are great they really explain many of the concepts of the book. I personally didn't read the essays and such so they were of no use to me. If you don't want the extra insight (provided by the notes), then i suggest getting a different version. If you are someone who has read Jane Eyre (just to read it), you must read WSS. It gives the "crazy woman" a voice. But be warned..you will not finish the book with the 'warm & fuzzies'. 3.
Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights
por: Charlotte Bronte, Emily Bronte 1943 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Love these booksThese are two great classics, and my daughter had to read Jane Eyre for school. She was having trouble reading her copy because we found out she was in need of new glasses. Downloading to the Kindle and making the font bigger spurred her into reading and liking the book. Evaluación: - My Favorite BooksI'd been wanting to read both of these stories and found these copies sitting on a shelf in my grandfather's library. Being a retired English teacher, he has all sorts of old, pretty-looking books, but these two stuck out to me. He told me I could take them and keep them as long as I took good care of them. They are two of the most beautiful books I own, and the engravings add wonderfully to the story. I own another copy of Wuthering Heights that I had to buy to annotate for school, and it just is not the same as reading it out of this book. Evaluación: - Exactly as I rememberedOur family owned this set when I was a child. I loved the wood engravings which inspired me to attempt to read Jane Eyre before I was old enough to comprehend most of the text. This edition started my life long love for classic literature. I would love to locate these editions for my own library as the ones from my childhood are now long gone. Evaluación: - A Book Lover's Must-Have!This edition of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights is, without question, where my lifelong love of books and English literature was born. As a child, I would pore over the Fritz Eichenberg wood engravings in my mother's set and long for the day when I would be old enough to read the books. Unlike anything before or since, the Eichenberg illustrations dramatically convey the atmosphere of the Bronte novels--dark, cold, sad, and haunting. I have purchased these sets for students who also have grown to love the Brontes, so my only reservation in urging people to buy these books is that I will need a few remaining copies to buy for future students, I am sure! It would be wonderful if a publisher would undertake a re-issuing of this edition of the novels. 5.

por: Charlotte Bronte, Sherri Browning Erwin Abril 13, 2010 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - This Is How It Should Be DoneThe recent trend of monster classic mashups has created some good ones and some bad ones. Jane Slayre is good one, however, purists might not like it. The author seamlessly blends Charlotte Bronte's classic novel with monsters and Buffy The Vampire Slayer (one of my favorite TV shows from the 90's) I loved it. Evaluación: - Outstanding!I LOVED this mash-up of Jane Eyre. Just like reading Charlotte Bronte, but with the addition of vampires, zombies, and werewolves. Great Bronte "voice" - the author REALLY nailed it! Evaluación: - Vampyres? Mr. Rochester? I'm in.I have always been a fan of both the classics and paranormal fiction, but I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about them mashed together. Jane Slayre made up my mind for me. I love it! Sherrie Browning Erwin stays true to the writing style of the original, but skillfully works in an edgy paranormal flair. (*Literary Purists, avert your eyes*) The paranormal elements actually make some of the Jane Slayre scenes more entertaining to read than the originals! This book has the same great characters and timeless romance, but with added entertainment value. You can't go wrong. I highly recommend this book to anyone. And Literary Purists: it just might convince you, too. Evaluación: - Brilliantly funny--great readLOVED this book! Jane Eyre is one of my favorites of the classics, but this twist was laugh-out-loud fun. The humor is brilliant and personally, I was glad to see Jane finally kick some butt. You don't have to be a fan of the classics to enjoy this book, it's definitely for everyone who loves good tongue-in-cheek humor. Evaluación: - Loved it!What a fun book! A new slant on Bronte's classic, with monsters and zombies and vampires, oh my! The writing is clever and suspenseful, and you will be turning pages to see what happens to Jane, next. Highly recommended. 9.
Classic British Fiction: The Bronte Family, all seven novels, the poetry, and 2 biographies, in a single file, improved 10/18/2009
por: Emily Bronte, Charlotte Bronte, Anne Bronte, Patrick Bronte Julio 05, 2008 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - UnreadableThe horrible formatting makes many of the books in the collection completely unreadable. Elizabeth Gaskell's Biography of Charlotte Bronte is the poorest formatted of all books here but the rest are quite unreadable as well. The ending of each subchapter is absent as if it were chewed off. The typos abound, and you have to sit there guessing how the sentence was supposed to end. The Brontes are amazing writers and they don't deserve to have their works tortured like this by unconscientious publishers eager to make a buck without doing any editing or formatting work. Evaluación: - Needs improvement but suits my needsAs of mid Dec 2009 there is no active table of contents for each chapter of each book, just only one heading for each particular book. All the poems are under just one entry, so it is impossible to look for a poem by its title or to tell which poem belongs to which of the family members. You can however search for a poem if you are familiar with any part of it. I experienced sentence breakage in the middle of paragraphs for "Jane Eyre" but not the "Wuthering Heights" as stated by one other reviewer. You should expect to find as many of them as there are pages on a printed book. Let's say 400. At the present time this edition has suited my needs and don't need to upgrade to a more expensive edition. Evaluación: - Poor formatting ruins great worksI wanted to read Jane Eyre and thought I was getting a good deal since I want to read Wuthering Heights at a later time. Although it is easy to navigate to specific works in the collection, the font is distracting and awkward to read for any length of time and the punctuation indistinct (the periods and commas are hard to tell apart). There is also random paragraph spacing in the middle of lines. I ended up buying another edition of Jane Eyre to finish reading the book. Evaluación: - This is great!I love that I have all of the Bronte sisters' works on my Kindle in a single file. The table of contents makes everything conveniently accessible. 10.
