I am 67 and I can't believe I still think I am Holden. Evaluación: - so-soI know this book is a classic -- that's why I wanted to read it. It's very easy to read, but I did not get much enjoyment out of it. I understand Caulden has angst, but that's all the book was about? Evaluación: - Great book in great formatThere is no need to review the literacy work, I guess, but I was delighted of the book format itself. While ordering I haven't noticed that it is not a regular format and really like it. It is small, really suits for carrying around and is very good for personal gift, which was the purpose of purchase. I like also hard covers and recycled-like paper. Evaluación: - Not worth it's iconic status. This was the selection for my book club, and it was chosen since it is considered a classic. I'm sure at the time it was a masterpiece, and it feels very authentic, but it doesn't really strike me as timeless. The general view of the club was no one really liked it. I'm glad I read it, since I at least now know, but I would not recommend it nor reread it. Evaluación: - Should have read it in high schoolSo...I know this is a supposed classic and it sooo great and blah blah blah pffft. But, I did not like it. I don't know if it's because I didn't read it in high school like everyone else but read it later in life when I just wanted this whiny spoiled rich kid to shutttt upppppp. I also didn't care for the writing style - some may call it simple prose, I call it crap that my cat could write (and probably would. My cat has a similar sense of entitlement to that of Holden Caulfiend - oops, I mean Caulfield) Now, I try not to let this influence my opinion of J.D. salinger's other celebrated work as I have not yet read anything else by him and I hear Frannie and Zooey is amazing. So, yeah, there you have it. Didn't like Catcher in the Rye, so sue me. 2.

He will forever live in my mind. Evaluación: - a mixed bag of wonderfully written stories...As with his trademark 'A Catcher in the Rye', 'Nine Stories' by J.D. Salinger is superbly written. The dialog and attention to detail are extraordinary. Little wonder these stories were first published in top tier magazines. Yet despite all this I found most of the stories to be forgettable. But there are a couple of superb stories, each one involving complexities of youth. As with his 'A Catcher in the Rye', the author shows that he is a keen observer of teenagers and their hormone-induced angst. Bottom line: well worth it for the couple of diamonds amongst the zirconium. Evaluación: - High expectations - did not deliverI really enjoyed Salinger's more popular Catcher in the Rye and wanted even more of Salinger to get my hands on. Quirky (as usual), despressed, and anti-climatic I did not enjoy Nine Stories. Would not even recommend as a light read to a friend. Evaluación: - Great sampling from the late author, loved The Laughing ManSalinger's cultish-like following has perhaps led to sporadic overpraise. That being said, I believe that Nine Stories is illustrative of the late author's greatness, and shows why his praise is justified. Salinger explores various issues: alienation, the effects of war on individuals, coming of age. The lessons learned in some of these stories aren't always in plain view, and, while it can be frustrating sometimes to read stories where you must "fill in the gaps", it can also be a rewarding experience when you see a semblance of moral or theme attached. Yes, this collection has its flaws--some of the "tales" here appear to more character vignettes than definite stories--but the precision with which Salinger writes and narrative voice he captures is undeniable. Salinger is not typical in his approach. There is always an underlying level of meaning working; if you read his stories just at surface level they probably won't make much sense. Still, Salinger has such exact words, ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Loved ItI picked this up when Salinger passed away and read it from start to finish that weekend. The book was in perfect condition and I received it promptly. Evaluación: - What's it all about, Alphie?I picked this one up expecting to love it. And, at times I did. I thought the deep philosophical questions were great and it was wonderful to read an author who clearly is thinking deeply...Somehow, though, it was very hard for me to remain engaged completely. Frankly, I've never had such a short book feel so long. Evaluación: - Marvelous! This little book packs quite a big punch of witty descriptions and thought-provoking dialogue in a succinct but moving religiously themed novel. Not much happens plot-wise throughout the 200 or so pages of "Franny and Zooey." Instead, the book is set on a foundation of a few excellent character interactions: first between Franny, a college student, and her boyfriend; then between Zooey, Franny's older brother, and their mother; and finally between Franny and Zooey. I simply love the way Salinger paints his characters and their surroundings: he's perfectly precise when he has to be, but skillfully indeterminate the rest of the time, allowing the reader to actively engage the book by creating a visual and audio picture of what is going on. While the book is religiously involved, it is absolutely accessible to non-religious people. In fact, Salinger does an excellent job of incorporating religions from all corners of the world in "Franny and Zooey," making this novel ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Franny and ZooeyI had the opportunity to read "Franny and Zooey" for a book group following upon the death of J.D. Salinger (1919 -2010). I had read "Catcher in the Rye" and this book as well, as I remember, late in high school but had not revisited the author since then. I was struck by the religious, spiritual themes of the book, especially its involvement with Eastern religion and with mysticism. My interest in Buddhism has increased in recent years as I have become older. Salinger's books, which appealed to young people many years ago, seem to have aged with the time. The book includes two short interrelated stories written a few years apart, "Franny" (1955) and "Zooey" (1957), which were published in book form in 1961. The two are the youngest children of the Glass family that Salinger created. Franny is 20 and her brother Zooey 25. There were seven Glass children, all of whom were intellectual and child prodigies who appeared, over the course of nearly 20 years, on a radio ... Leer Más Evaluación: - the mental agonyI think this book speaks about the mental agony of the two characters--exceptionally intellectual, raised in extraordinarily cerebral upbringing--when they are faced with the schism between their intellectual and spiritual ideals. Franny chooses obssessive recitation of "Jesus Prayer" and her nervous breakdown seems the result of this split (Schzophrenic) between these two very important worlds in her life. Zooey, on the other hand, decides to choose what appears to be more functional (at least superficially) way to manage this agony, however, clearly without satisfaction. I didn't really like this book because of too much similarity to The Catcher in the Rye, but with less discipline in writing and the plot. 4.

por: J.D. Salinger Enero 30, 2001 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Two portraits of SeymourAt first, these two extended stories may seem relatively unrrelated, with only the narration of Buddy Glass holding them together. But both stories give devoted Salinger readers a more intimate portrait of the Glass family's most complex member, Seymour. In Raise the High Roof Beams, Carpenters, Buddy is on his way to Seymour's wedding with an opinionated crowd. Through strangers' remarks about Seymour, we learn how the outside world sees him: aloof, unresponsive. But in Seymour: An Introduction, Buddy delves deeper into Seymours idiosyncrasies. placing all of his quirks and musings about life. Seymour is a man of polar opposites, either fiercely reticent or wonderfully gregarious, a master at an oddball sport or terrifically awful. This pairing of stories will satisfy any Salinger reader who might like a little more insight after reading "A Perfect Day for Bananafish". Evaluación: - Something to Go Back toI just finished this book this evening, and though it was a chore to get through "Seymour", I'm glad that I did. It had been almost eleven years since I had last read it, and I had quit reading "Seymour" about twenty pages in. It just wasn't where I was at, and I had a hard time following it. Now that time has passed and I'm in a much different place, I was able to understand the more subtle things going on with Seymour. That doesn't mean that it wasn't somewhat of a challenge to read through, it was, the rambling style of it all especially. I agree that the first half was definitely easier to get through because it was more straightforward, but not so with the second half. Anyway, I know that this is one of those books that I will come back to, and understand a little more as I continue to get older. Evaluación: - Unequal ReadingJust like Franny & Zooey this is a novel with two parts. The first part in both (Franny and Raise High...) are short and good narratives and makes you realize the writing skills of Salinger, NOW when it comes to the second part in both books: PURE disapointment (Zooey is maybe less sufferable than Seymour Introduction), both have a continuous Buddy Glass ruminations that make it very hard to get into the story (if there is one). Boring. Evaluación: - Salinger's Greatest HeightWhat I'm about to say may help to clarify from where I'm coming: Salinger is my favorite author; Catcher in the Rye is my least favorite of his works. Obviously, I hold a great fondness for things about Salinger's writing that are not held in as great esteem by many others. That said, in Carpenters, there is a quality of voice woefully uncommon in most literature, and less seen even in Salinger's other works. The language flows in a way that manages to be both casual and astoundingly lyrical, with subtly different tones for each character. Seymour: an Introduction is slightly less stellar, but good all the same. For anyone that finds the way a story is told to be a measure of its excellence, I recommend this heartily. Evaluación: - Brilliant ...A third reading leaves me more impressed than the first two (must be my age) ... I will forever describe myself as a "chiropodist." "Raise High ..." is brilliant writing. 6.
Nine Stories
por: J. D. Salinger 1971 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Great!Very good seller, expedited the book as requested, condition as stated. would definitely use this seller again. Evaluación: - J.D. Salinger as a storytellerMost people, when they think of J. D. Salinger, think of his book "Catcher in the Rye". This book is collection of nine stories most of which were published in The New Yorker Magazine long time ago. Each story is unique and beautifully told but my absolute favorite is "A Perfect Day for Bananafish". I also liked "For Esme - with Love and Squalor" and "De Daumier-Smith Blue Period". J. D. Salinger's genius is being able to explain state of mind of the emotionally unstable protagonists in his stories. Most of his characters from these stories are some sort of social misfits. Nevertheless, they are endearing and lovable. I particularly like how author uses children, their way of speaking to others, especially adults, their unlimited imagination and non-judgemental attitude affects people around them. The sensibility of this most wonderful writer is unique. I will read the rest of his published work. J.D. Salinger is sublime.
