Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - Explotation at it's best
Wow, so now previous modeling or modeling agent experience is all I need to be an expert on nutrition and weight loss?! Whoo hoo! Guess I wasted all my time studying human biochemistry & physiology, anthropology, comparative anatomy, botany, psychology & nutrition. Just be 'Kool', swear ALOT and be skinny. Well, if this "speaks" to you - then ya get what you pay for. See ya down the road - w/ cancer, diabetes, anorexia, osteoporosis, osteopenia, Chrone's, leaky gut, rickets, cataracts, Lupus, osteo or rheumatoid arthritis and cardiovascular disease. And, maybe, you'll even be skinny. I GUARANTEE you will be bitchy. Caveat - don't mistake "entertainment" for the real thing. "There's a sucker born every minute". Adtkins is ALOT closer to the truth than this trick. (This is from a fit, thin, 50+yo physiologist on a high nutrient dense diet who's been around the vegan game & knows how insane it is.) Now- local foods, organic, humane animal farming, non-GMO - these are well worth your ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - A book that finally change the way I eat and feel healthy and fulfilled with the new way of eating
Disclaimer: Please excuse my spelling, I moved to the States when I was 27 from Asia so please bare with my spelling.

This is the best "diet book" I ever read. The tough love style of depicting the stomach turning facts of the how the whole meat industry work, the references they quote in everything they wrote is very informative. I suspect some of the one start reviews are written by people who have direct interest or connection with the meat industry (I noticed a lot of the people who gave one star to this book this is the only review they gave in their profile. Makes me wonder did they just create a username to give a review to this one book??? Hey, the meat industry is a multi-billions dollars industry, I'm sure they want to fight back because this book is detrimental to their business) The food industry are very powerful and have lobbyist just as wall street, pharmaceutical companies and tobacco companies. The book as powerful and knowledgeable as Skinny Bitch is a ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 2 out of 5 stars - Mixed Emotions
While I do agree with most of the things mentioned in this book. I don't know that it was totally necessary that the writers take the "in your face" approach. I can see why others believe that this is not a good dieting book, and it was misleading since it mentions nowhere that the diet, in order to be a "Skinny Bitch", is to become vegan. I have given it some thought over the years, and if anything this book has made me strongly consider it, but not because of the health aspect. I was literally crying, reading the "You are what you eat" chapter, where they talk about what goes on in the slaughter houses. I think most of us know what occurs in those places, but we don't want to think about it. Rather, we'd prefer to just enjoy our meat and dairy, without considering what happened to the animals who provided it.

So, I am really on the fence on this read. I did think the profanity was offensive. Additionally, many statements, and how they were addressed to the reader were just ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - Terrible book
This is the worse $12 I have EVER spent! As a marathon runner, extreme healthy eater, personal trainer and someone with a background in healthcare, I was anxious to see what this book had to offer. I forced myself to read to page 64 (thinking it might get better) and eventually had to quit reading. I will not read anymore of this disgusting book and will most likely donate it to a library. The information is completly bogus!! After reading only 3 chapters, I discovered that coffee, milk, protein, and all meat is bad for me.....seriously?? I was shocked at the completly untrue information in this book. I think I will continue to follow my own knowledgable eating habits and stay far, far away from what these women have written.

Evaluación: 2 out of 5 stars - I wanted to like it...
I brought this book not realizing that it was a vegan cookbook. However I was moved my the authors' passion and it made me want to like the philosophy. I am a very active woman. I have recently been trying to cook more to help my eating habits compliment my workouts. I never even thought about cutting out meats or dairy from my diet; nevertheless, I tried some of these recipes. I initially believed the authors made some good points and thought to myself `maybe I could be a vegan; what the heck I'll give it a shot.' I found the authors to be condescending and judgmental, but I know it was meant to be cute and funny. I have to admit they made me giggle a few times
So I went to Whole Foods stocked up on ingredients and got cooking. My goal was to go vegan for a weekend. Sadly I just did not enjoy these recipes. Some were ok but it made me seriously reconsider converting. Eating is a big part of life and I would feel very unfulfilled eating meals that I did not enjoy, or were just edible. ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Good Gateway Vegan Cookbook
I like the meals in the book. I look at this book as kind of a gateway vegan book. It's kind of leading you into it by not asking you to give up your favorite comfort foods altogether, hence the use of meat and cheese analogs. Most of these recipes are very easy and not too fussy which can be a blessing. Once you get used to cooking like a vegan/vegetarian you can always expand your library. I don't dig tempeh or seitan (regardless of what cookbook I try) but I love the pasta and other recipes provided. As for people being offended by the language, I wonder, did they not read the title or the description of the book? Why the surprise? I respect the authors for marketing the book in a way that got and kept our attention; I think the end justifies the means. I have issues with portion control, and I joined weight watchers before trying the recipes in this book. What I've found is that most of them easily mesh with the points system. BTW another great vegan cook book is "The 30 Minute ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 2 out of 5 stars - Do you like soy cheese/meat?
This cookbook relies heavily on substitute cheese and meat products. If you do not enjoy the taste of soy "cheese" and/or soy "meat", this book is not for you. On the other hand, if you DO enjoy these products, you will probably find this book very useful! The recipes are easy, quick, plentiful, and true to the diet recommended by the authors in their previous book "Skinny Bitch".

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Yummy Food
I actually like this cook book quite a bit even though I understand those who give it criticism. The recipes are not all that healthy, they use lots of processed vegan substitutes, and most of the recipes you could probably have veganized yourself if you knew how to make the non-vegan counterpart.

However, that being said, the recipes are pretty tasty. I did not cook often before becoming vegan over 3 years ago, so I do not have a lot of experience making the non-vegan version of many of these things. Plus, as someone who occasionally likes to experiment with vegan cheeses, sour creams, and mock meats, I like having a book that tells me how to properly cook these items.

Things I have cooked and liked are the red wine "beef" stew (absolutely delicious), the stuffed pasta shells with red sauce (one of my husband's favorite meals), quesadillas, eggplant parmesan, edamame three bean salad, french lentil salad, and potato and pumpkin curry.

The only thing I was ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Propaganda, but...

I was fifty-two pages deep in SKINNY BASTARD when the authors finally admitted that they were writing Vegan propaganda. Do not think this dismayed me too terribly much. I live in Los Angeles, and can't throw a rock without pegging a Vegan right in the kisser. I'm used to Vegans, and I decided that finishing the book would allow me to give their culinary philosophy a hearing.
I won't bore you with the story why I was curious about alternative food approaches, except to say that like everyone else born in the 70s, I grew up being bombarded with cold-blooded Food Industry and Government b.s. about the Four Food Groups and the Food Pyramid, which were designed primarily to bilk people into thinking that you needed red meat, cow milk and white bread to stay alive. As I grew older and realized the extent to which I'd been brainwashed, I cast about for a food philosophy that felt right to me - in other words, balanced health with good taste, and also addressed, at least in a token way, some ... I really enjoyed listening to the audio and it is straight forward and to the point. Only problem was the description says it's compatible for an MP3 format and I've been unable to download it apparently it has some type of protection. I wanted to be able to listen to it while working out or walking but have not been able to copy it to MP3.

Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - Put down and run away
I was curious of this book and bought it yesterday. I've read the first couple chapters and I'm mad... not upset... mad about this book. I paged to the bibliography and I noticed a lot of sources around veganism which should have made me put down the book in the first place. So here we have a book for guys encouraging a vegan lifestyle- of which I don't agree with.

A little bit about me. I'm a male nurse with a specialty in Emergency nursing and weight loss nursing. No, I do not help with gastric bypass surgery. I counsel and educated people on healthier eating and lifestyle during weight loss AND weight maintenance... which IS the healthiest way to go. A vegan lifestyle for guys who should be buff is very hard to achieve and maintain. It is very hard to get adequate protein to increase muscle mass with a vegan diet. Minimally one should have 0.8 grams protein per kilogram body weight. And if you're trying to gain muscle... some suggest getting your ideal body weight's (lbs)worth of protein ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - A very mixed bag
This book is a very mixed bag with a lot of good information about the advantages of the vegan lifestyle and the evils of modern animal farms, but unfortunately it's marred by a lack of scientific rigor and some obvious misstatements of fact that just common sense will tell you have to be false. For example, the authors state that in the 50's the average dairy cow gave 2000 pounds of milk a year. Then they claim that today a typical dairy cow gives 50,000 pounds, for a 25-fold increase in the amount of milk, due to hormone treatments.

Just a simple calculation will show you that this is almost 1000 pounds of milk a week, from a cow that weighs at most about 1400 pounds. I quickly found a short web article on dairy cattle with stats on the five main breeds, and most of the breeds have cows that weigh considerably less than that, such as the Holsteins and the Jerseys which are only about 1100 pounds, which means a cow would have to produce almost its own weight in milk a week. This is obviously ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 2 out of 5 stars - Kind of a waste of money
I absolutely love the Skinny Bitch series. The first book changed my life, the recipe book is very well used in our house, and the DVDs are great, but this is just an expensive notebook. Buy a composition book for a buck and save yourself the money. Writing down your thoughts is a great way to stay on track, but this idea is better expressed by buying your own.

Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - Horrible.
Everyone pretty much summed up my feelings in all of the reviews. I just want to add my one star.

Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - Very Misleading
This is my first time ever writing a review but I was so upset by the deception of these authors I wanted others to be informed before purchasing it. I guess the authors think its okay because they state in the book that the title is a marketing ploy. So right there, they admit to intentionally misleading people to get people to buy the book. That is wrong and detracts from their credibility. I will never buy anything either of them writes, nor would I buy something from any other author I felt deceived in this way (yes, I know they aren't the only authors to do so). I guess I just don't understand if your book is about becoming a vegan, why didn't you just say that? I know, because they want to sell books.

If you choose any other dietary option (other than vegan) the authors basically state you're a bad mother. ooo-kay. That seems pretty extreme. But it gets worse. The authors use scare tactics and lectures to guilt you into believing their way is the best way. The book is not sassy and cute, ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - I might be missing the point
It is not a poorly wirtten book but I can see where some might be turned off by the tone and the sarcasm. Pregnant women are not a bunhc of angry woment hat can't stand their husbands and I think that many pregnancy books try to exploit this. This would be a book better suited to the vegan or the activist because I think that is the tone that has been set. That being said I think it is what it set out to do, be entertaining. There are many entertaining books out there like Hands Off My Belly: The Pregnant Woman's Survival Guide to Myths, Mothers, and Moods that are not written as a text book but more like an informative piece that fills a niche. this is a niche book.

Evaluación: 2 out of 5 stars - There are far better preggo books out there!
I was excited to read this book and was very disappointed with it, overall. For starters, I respect that both authors have studied and promote holistic health. I've studied my fair share on the topic as well and I agree with several pieces of information throughout the book--these ladies make many excellent (and factual) points about nutrition, how the average consumer in American society does not read product/ingredient labels before eating or drinking something, how we are overexposed to chemicals, etc. However, this book was not an enjoyable read for me at all during my pregnancy--I have a tendency to be a worrywart as it is and this book seemed to make me feel even more paranoid and worried about what I was consuming during my pregnancy. To be fair, I'm not a vegan or vegetarian, I imagine that people with those dietary lifestyles may enjoy the book a lot more. However, I agree with the authors that the conditions in meat factories are absolutely horrifying and I may go vegetarian someday as a result. The ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - Disappointed!
I just read the book. If I had wanted a lecture on how to not drink or eat dairy or how animals were slaughtered I would have gone to the PETA website.
I was hoping it was going to be a funny light hearted approach to eating healthy while pregnant.
I would not recommend it to a friend. At least I paid 4 bucks for it instead of 14.95!

If you have ever considered a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle, this is the book for you. I don't think anyone will put another piece of meat in your mouth after reading this. The writing is entertaining and the book is an easy read.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - awesome, fun reading but very informative!!
I love this book! And the cookbook has got some great recipes. I don't like all of them but who does like all the recipes in any cookbook? The book itself is amazing! It is definetly not for kids. I think this book yells at you and puts you in your place. I love the way it is written and even though they swear allot, it's in good fun. I liked the way they approached the subject. It really is very informative and a awesome book for anyone going vegan and interested in bieng healthy and reversing disease!!!!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Skinny Bitch Boxed Set
If you can get past the title and the cussing, these books are a wealth of information. It has changed the way I think about food completely. The recipes are amazing and have variety which is great because in order to eat healthy and not go back to "eating crap" you need to be armed with a plethora of delicious recipes. Don't be offended that the authors call their audience bitches. I started out reading it and thinking that it was a bit much, but I saw that their tactic was successful in waking me up. The message can be boring or preachy if delivered by someone else, but their in-your-face attitude is backed up by all of the facts that we tend to ignore as a society.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Skinny Box
Great book. Simple, to the point and well versed. Some of the opinions are strong, but well put and researched.
The recipes are fabulous!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Life changing
First, let's break down the title of the book. "Skinny Bitch: A No-Nonsense, Tough-Love Guide for Savvy Girls Who Want to Stop Eating Crap and Start Looking Fabulous!"

Skinny Bitch = Like another reviewer pointed out, if there is an expletive in the title that should be an indication that there may be more to follow inside, right? I wouldn't think those who are easily offended would steer clear of buying this book based on that fact alone.

A No-Nonsense, Tough-Love Guide = The ladies inform you they will be blunt and not sugar coat a thing. If you're not ready for it, don't buy the book!

C'mon guys. Use your common sense. Their 'warnings' couldn't have been clearer.

I loved the book! It WILL NOT be everyone's cup of tea but their approach and attitude was exactly what I needed to hear! Yes, I too found some inconsistencies but they tell you right in the book not to take their word as 100% truth; use your brain and figure it out for yourself.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Eat Simply and Reclaim Your Energy. These books are right on!
Why I Read this Book: Health is a constant area of study for me. These women have done the research and have a simple lifestyle that works. I've experienced it.

Review:

I know what you're thinking..."What on earth is Reading For Your Success doing posting a review on a book with a title like this?" How could that possibly be related to true health or success? Well, as my mom taught me early on not to judge a book by it's cover, it took me a couple years but I finally got past this one. And I'm glad I did. The books written by Rory and Kim have turned out to be incredible wealths of information. Useful, empowering tools that can dramatically change the way you feel and look-as they have for me. Not to mention they're about as entertaining as a nutrition book (or any book) can be.

I was given this book as a gift from relative.
We're always talking about losing weight and thought I would enjoy the read.

The book is entertaining and has some good points.
But it also tells you to stop eating all meat, dairy, processed food and even......coffee!
I agree with a previous poster who said they preach about not eating processed food, but then talk about eating soy burgers, which is completely processed.

I may never eat beef or pork again after the descriptions on killing those animals.
But I will pay attention to labels more and will definitely think before I put food in my mouth.

Why would they have a calendar just taken a few sentences each day from the book??? It's a joke to me! I turned vegan after reading Skinny Bitch so it's a life changing book for me. But this calendar is a joke if you already have the book. Don't waste your money!

I loath this book so much that I'm taking the time to write about it. If you want to women to call you a fat b**** and talk to you like you're a child then this may be the book for you, but I found it insulting. And I'm not someone who is generally offended by cursing.

I bought this book because I'm always looking for new advice on a healthy diet and actually mistook this book for another one that I was looking for. While some of the information in the book is accurate, not all of it is. Most of they're sources are questionable at best. The amount of misinformation or skewed information is shocking. I find it appalling that they say you can eat as much "junk food" as you want as long as it's vegan... what?! I resent being told that I'm a terrible person if I'm not vegan as well. While I am VERY much opposed to factory farming, I am not going to be made to feel guilty for using animal products.

Furthermore, all of the recipes in the book call for processed foods... which are not healthy ... Leer Más

I bought this book for my (at the time) 15 year old stepdaughter. She's always been health conscious, and I thought that she'd appreciate its forthright dietary advice. After she read it, she became a vegetarian and has continued to be so now for over two years. It's a great gift for teenagers who otherwise can get caught up on the fast food/obesity track that so important to keep them away from. A great book. This book is for people who want to be a vegan. I didn't know about that when I bought this book.
I have some questions after reading this book. Why can not I eat organic yogurt or kefir? Those products are very good for us. What about French and Italian people who eat cheese, drink wine, and still have a low percentage of cardiovascular diseases as a population? They are not overweight.
I work with many people from India who are truly vegans. They don't eat meat substitutes. I was surprised to find fake chicken, fake groundmeat, and fake meatballs in recipes. Why do vegans have to eat something to remind them of meat?

Filled with sarcasm and bad science, this book is a vegetarian cookbook in disguise. It states the old fiction of meat rotting in your stomach and while stating that sugar is the enemy, uses ketchup (which requires a load of sugar in the ingrediants before it can be labelled as such) in several recipes.
If it's vegetarian cooking you want, you can do better.
