por: Stephen King Julio 06, 2010 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - A good read, but...I've been a fan of Stephen King for about 15 years now, and like many of his other novels, Under the Dome did not disappoint. It came close though. My one complaint about this novel is that there were far to many characters to keep track of, and at times I wasn't sure which characters I should care about or forget about. Mr. King is such a skillful writer that he somehow managed to tie up all the loose ends and kill off most of the unnecessary characters by the end of the novel. However, because this book was at times a confusing read, if this was my first King novel I would probably be reluctant to pick up another one. Evaluación: - ehhStarted out good...the book dragged on and on and on. I lost interest and "missed" pieces towards the end; which is really unusual for a Stephen King book. If you are a fan, you have to read; but know that he has written much better books. Evaluación: - Half Way Through And...This is one of the best books I've ever read. I covered the screen so as to not accidentally pick up a spoiler because honestly, I have no idea what's going to happen. The characters in this town are all intertwined and developed very nicely. I am so excited to read the rest I bring it everywhere I go so I can get a few minutes in here and there. If you are considering buying this, do it. That's all I can say. I have never read anything of King's other than "The Tommyknockers" which I barely remember because it had to be 15 years ago. I've recently read "Eating the Dinosaur" "Life of Pi" "Oscar Wao" anything Patterson or Grisham but just never got around to King. What attracted me was the sheer size of the book, I figured something so large had to intrigue the author to have the story pour out of him. This story reads like a movie and I absolutely cannot wait to see how it ends, even if I am disappointed with his ending, the first half of the book makes it worthwhile. The ... So when calamity falls on the characters I did gasp and cringe in horror. I did whoop and cry in joy for the good parts. A masterful weave of a tale. Wesley purchases an Amazon Kindle in hopes of impressing his ex-girlfriend. He soon discovers that his Kindle is pink, and has the ability to download brand new stories by famous deceased authors. He also discovers that he can download future newspapers from different Urs, which enables him to see into the future. It's certainly not among King's best works (it's a novella, after all), but it's a really good short read, especially if you own a Kindle! Evaluación: - spookyDid Amazon pay Stephen King to write UR or did it try to bribe him not to write it? That's the question, and will Kindle be coming out in any other colors? I'm sure the sales would go through the roof if a Kindle came out in 'Breast Cancer Pink'. A wonderful read from King as usual. His characters are so real and so easily frightened. I'm not sure how many people wouldn't have gone straight to the stock reports, or the winning Lotto numbers instead of taking such a literary road such as Wesley Smith did in the King's new novel UR. Sure, retyping lost Hemingway novels and passing them off as your own might create a guilty conscious, but I doubt betting on the ponies would. But then again, where would the suspense of a Stephen King novel come in? I thoroughly enjoyed the new 'Kindle-inspired' novelette by Stephen King. On Writing: A Memoir Of The Craft
por: Stephen King Octobre 03, 2000 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Inspiring.I'm an aspiring author, much like many of the other people who bought this book. I won't go into specifics of the content regarding his "tips" because I see others have. Instead, I will say that reading this book helped lift the creative slump I've been dealing with. His tips obviously aren't for everyone, but there is valuable information to be found within. Having read some of the negative reviews, I feel I should also say that this book describes Stephen King's writing process: how he writes, how he began writing, where his ideas come from, etc. If you're expecting him to tell you how to write and hold your hand through each step, I'm sorry to inform you that he doesn't do that. If you're expecting him to tell you how the Bronte sisters wrote, he doesn't do that either. There is a brief section on grammar, but if you need help with that, you're better off looking for a different kind of book or researching on the internet. This is perfect for people who love to read, yes I said it, if you love reading then please read this, it will give you the tools on how to read better. Also I would recommend it to anyone who wants to write, people enamored with the idea of having a book out with their name on it or simply those who like to scribble mad stories in their journals late at night, hats off to you and make sure you read this piece of a gem before you begin, it's an endless pool of inspiration and motivation. Leer Más Evaluación: - My Review On Writing by Stephen KingI know nothing of writing outside my high scholl creative writing class but have always loved Stephen king books, so when I came across this book by my favorite author, I wanted to see what he had to say. Frankly, I liked it. Mr king has a style of writing that makes you feel as if he is sitting with you and telling you a story. This book is know different. I felt as if I were having coffee with him while he told me his thoughts on how to write a story. He does not add all the fluff my old teachers thought were important about writing but gets to the knitty gritty of how best to put your thougths into a coherant piece of work. I found the book interesting and useful. Evaluación: - Must-read for writers and students of humanityI'm no fan of Steven King the novelist. Nevertheless, I heard him interviewed on NPR for what was, I believe, the 10th anniversary of On Writing. I knew I had to read it. The [...] recording was made by King himself, lending this very personal book an added layer of poignancy. It's not a spoiler to say that the climax of the story is his should-have-been-fatal accident while walking down a Maine highway. Along the way are unforgettable tales of his childhood ear infections; or the one where he was drunk at a drive-in when the manager interrupted the movie and announced over the speakers, "Mr. King, return home, your wife is having the baby"; how he wrote and sold his first hit book, "Carrie". King says, "forget about plot, tell a story", and he certain has done so here. Evaluación: - Well DoneWell written, informative, interesting, inspiring, personable, kind to the would be writer. I have read books of this sort by other writers and they are usually aloof and pretentious, flat and discouraging . I honestly feel from reading this book that King is a real flesh and bones human who loves his work and has both respect and compassion for the craft / occupation of writing. He talks about the elusive magic (my words, not his) of inspiration and that need to put in the perspiration. I feel inspired and encouraged to write with the advice of one who is involved with and has been successful at writing. I am grateful to Stephen King for this book. Though I have no illusions about becoming a famous writer or even a good writer. What I do feel confident about is that with this book I can improve on what I do now. The Colorado Kid
por: Stephen King Octobre 04, 2005 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Waste of TimeI'm not the only reviewer to write this, so it's not much of a spoiler, but I cannot stand when I invest time in a book to have NOTHING solved in the end. I read this book because my husband and I have become fans of the summer SyFy series Haven, and the credits state that it's based on this book. I'm not sure how--the series isn't over yet, so I'm assuming that the case that somehow involves Audrey's mom is the Colorado Kid story, but that's the only connection I've found between the book and the television show. The book comes across as amateurish--definitely not the style readers have come to expect from Stephen King. I was hooked through most of it too, because it is quite interesting and kept me guessing as to what had happened. But then...no delivery. The reader is never given the conclusion and wrap-up. I know that is how the author wanted it, but I am all about closure and can't stand open-ended interpretation. Bleah. Evaluación: - a true, unexplained mysteryNow that was a mystery! A "true unexplained mystery." Usually I can't stand open ended books or books that end with a cliff hanger, but this one I loved. There is something about the way King crafts his stories, with such rich characters and details that draws you into the scene and makes you feel like you are sitting right there hearing the dialog, that I really enjoy. I found this story refreshing in that it dared to tell a story where the ends weren't tied up neatly, answering all the questions and then used that story to make a point and clarify the two types of storytelling. I am very glad I started watching the TV show Haven, which motivated me to read this story that it is based on. It clarified for me why I can't stand books that are just "accounts of unfolding events" and end with cliff hangers. I get enough of that in real life when I escape while reading fiction I want a story with a beginning, middle and end. While this story may not have had answers to what happened it did ... Leer Más Evaluación: - A short Noir Stephen King novelThis short Stephen King mystery is a who dun it, why dun it, even when dun it-- to whom. Putting the pieces together is the fun, but their are no absolute answers. You might be able to create your own Murder Mysrtery Party at home based on this. This novel is the basis for the tv show HAVEN, but the events of the book take place 20 or 25 years before the tv series. Evaluación: - Colorado Kid book on CDI enjoyed the book. I ordered it because on the TV credits, it mentioned that the new SyFy program "Haven" was based on this story. Even though there was not a close connection between the book and the show, I enjoyed the mystery. The item was in very good condition and I was able to play it as soon as it arrived. Evaluación: - "Colorado Kid"- the Anti-Mystery ?If ever a book could be called an "Anti-Mystery", it's "The Colorado Kid". At the end of the mystery, the detectives are still as baffled as when they started. There are enough unsolved mysteries in real life, we don't need fictional ones. I thought part of the fun of mystery novels is that the detective solves them in the end, "The Colorado Kid" doesn't do that plus there was no "mutant of the Week" as in the " Haven" TV series that is supposedly based on this book. 7.

Quite entertaining for what it was. It gave you the feel of a narrative, with interesting and sympathetic characters. No horror here. Evaluación: - A Solid (but Short) Old School Baseball Tale with a TwistHere's the short version of my review: If you think 45 (or so) minutes of quality Stephen King reading about an old time baseball player with a dark secret is worth $2.99 - then pick up this book. If you don't, then go ahead and skip it. If you want a slightly longer review, then Blockade Billy is a fast-paced read with an interesting voice. The story is told in the form of a monologue, with Mr. King prompting Blockade Billy's former coach for information on this special player. As the story unfolds you will hear about the New Jersey Titans and their new catcher, who turns out to be more than a little strange. You'll turn pages quickly in order to find out exactly what Billy's secret is. King totally nails the baseball lingo, and it's a cool throwback to the good ol' days with cameo appearances by baseball legends such as Ted Williams. The style almost reminds me of the stories my grandfather used to tell me... although his stories did not usually end the way Blockade Billy does! ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Blockade this BillyBeing a Stephen King fan, I did not mind paying the reduced $10 for a short story. What I regret is paying for a low quality King work that was read in 45 minutes. This is not an exaggeration, I read this in less than an hour. The story was tight, decent, not King's best but not his worst. What really brought me down was the "bonus" story which was so cheesy that I felt embarrassed for the author. Before you think I do not "get it," I do; I have read the entire Dark Tower series multiple times, have read most King, and even really liked (really liked!) Creepshow. But there is a difference between tongue-in-cheek and a total miss. Unless this is a completing-my-collection buy (in which case hold out for it to drop below $5 or be a signed copy) I would visit the library and reading it there as well. Except for the most die-hard, "there is no way King could even err in a single world he ever pens," fans, you're much better off re-buying one of your more battered King books and having the pleasure ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Not worth the price tag.Blockade Billy was an okay story, though not incredibly exciting. It tells the story of Blockade Billy, the catcher who was erased from history because of something really terrible that he did (I don't want to spoil the end in case you do want to read it). It's told as if it was just like Granny (one of the baseball team's managers) telling the story, no extra description or background that wasn't necessary, or anything else; just the story told like you would tell a friend who wasn't there. That was an element that I did like. But I didn't find the story to be all that exciting or compelling, and in the end I mostly finished it just because it was so short and I hate not finishing books. This one just didn't hold my attention all that well. It was a very quick read, and not really worth the price tag, as others have said. I'm glad I borrowed it rather than buying it. Evaluación: - King Strikes Out With Two Boring Stories That Wouldn't Even Make it as Fillers in His Other Short Story CollectionsStephen King has written some of the greatest masterpiece novels of all time, such as It, Christine and Misery. He can write a great short story too, The Mist, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption are just two examples of King's brilliance. With Blockade Billy and Morality (the other story that comes with this) your fighting a strong urge to just stop reading due to boredom, only continuing on because it's Stephen King and hey there must be at least a great scene coming up. There isn't. Don't waste your time on what is simply a boring baseball story and another that's just trying a glorifying pointless violence to shock and be a talking point. Borrow it from the library, but don't waste any of your hard earner money obtaining these two stories that wouldn't even make the filler list in King's other short story collections. 8.

And it was, for the most part. I'm just not into Westerns (and The Dark Tower is sort of a Western), but I am into Stephen King (hence why I even picked up The Gunslinger). But, my God, 219 pages have never seemed so long to me (I'm not counting the Afterword since King's are always amusing). I really couldn't bring myself to care about the book. I only started caring about the book about forty pages before the end. Before that, I just liked the relationship between Roland and Jake (one big reason why I kept reading). I was just so bored throughout most of The Gunslinger. Boredom caused by reading rarely happens to me, but when it does, it really becomes the death of the book and most of the time if it's a series, I don't bother picking up the next installment (as the Mistress of the Art of Death sequel knows too well) and that's if I even finish the first installment. Evaluación: - A bit disjointed, but ultimately a great bookAdmittedly, I felt lost on several occasions while reading this, the first book in the Dark Tower series. For me at least, that was most of the fun. Trying to figure out what this world of Roland Deshain's is, what happened that made it this way, and what the hell is the Dark Tower and this elusive Man in Black? There are some great moments in this story that shed some light on the proceedings, but just enough to wet your appetite. The last several pages alone were worth the read in my opinion. This novel/series may not be for everyone, and to those that have tried to get through this book and have stopped for one reason or another, the writing definitely takes a turn for the better in the subsequent books. Give the Dark Tower and The Gunslinger a try, you won't be disappointed, but if you are, then I apologize. Evaluación: - Great StoryI am a big Stephen King/Richard Bachman fan from way back when. I love his Gunslinger series. Of course you may not want to take my critique too seriously, because I just think that this author just can't go wrong. There were some very sad moments as well as joyful ones surrounding these characters I've grown to love. King remained true to the characters until the end, and what an ending it was. Picking up where "Song of Susannah" left off, we find Jake and Pere fighting their way through the Dixie Pig in pursuit of Susannah. At the same time, Mia/Susannah are giving birth to Mordred - a spider/human changeling who is a killer almost from his first breath. With the help of Oy and having Pere's distraction, Jake is able to track Susannah to Fedic. Back in Maine, Eddie and Roland enlist the help of John Cullum once again to complete the work of securing the rose. Wolves was one of my favorites in the series, Song had some great back story on some of the mythos, and The Dark Tower, with a twisted, and at times unfocused path, was a great ending to the series. Admittedly, I haven't read any other of King's novels, so a lot of the tie-ins didn't click with me or add anything to the story. I'm sure that if I had, it would have made a bigger impact overall. I felt that Patrick Danville could have been left out of the story, and the confrontation with the Crimson King could have been a bit more substantial. Granted, the showdown with the King wasn't Ronald's goal, but rather the climbing of the tower. After losing Jake, Eddie, Oy, and being left by Susannah for alternate world versions of these three, I didn't think there could be any other ending for Roland other than death or something just as bleak. What I got, however, bleak as it was, surprised ... Leer Más Evaluación: - An Excellent ConclusionIn terms of the best volume as a whole, the high water mark of the series was book 4 (Wizard and Glass). Book 5 was an entertaining read, but it felt like a lengthy detour from the main story. Book 6, in my opinion, is almost completely unnecessary and mostly boring. The bulk of it deals with Susannah and the birth of her baby; a story that was much longer than it needed to be, and mostly tedious. The story in book 6 spills over into the start of book 7, which means that all the weaknesses of that story carryover into the final volume. Once that part of the story wraps up, book 7 begins to build momentum toward the conclusion. The final half of the book; when the characters are directly on the road to the tower is intense and gripping adventure. I would say that it is a highlight of the entire series. The conclusion is powerful, and in the context of the entire series, it is very consistent with what we have learned about Roland and his world. WARNING: SPOILERS FOLLOW This ... I don't know what I expected, but this... this was just a HUGE letdown. I'll make a quick summarization of the series from my point of view before my take on this last entry... I wasn't exactly captivated by the series; I hated the fact that the first book started, went back, restarted, and then, at the end, skipped ahead centuries. The second book was a standstill; it took place on a beach. The path to the tower and Walter was halted. The third was the best in the series, no doubt. Much of the progression on the path to the ending was made here. The fourth bore absolutely no bearing on the overall plot. It was a complete waste of time. Evaluación: - Best of the series so far.I just finished Wolves of the Calla this afternoon, and while it suffered from the same side track syndrome that permeated the previous book in the series, Wizard and Glass, I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Even though it was pretty off track, Wolves of the Calla succeeds at being a wholly engaging and entertaining side quest of Roland and his ka-tet. The mystery surrounding the wolves and why they are nabbing a single twin from each pair from the Calla Bryn Sturgis is answered throughout the course of the novel, but there is much left to ponder when all is said and done. The story of Don Callahan, the priest from Salem's Lot, who died and found him self in the world that Roland is questing through is absolutely the high point of this novel for me. Yet this is the first book of his that I felt strongly enough about to write a review. Why, you may ask? Because of the excruciating boredom I am currently experiencing while listening to yet another of Father Callahan's tangents. I call it a tangent because it is exactly that. It has absolutely no relevance to the main story arc and on top of that fails to pique my interest in any way. Allow me to elaborate on my frustrations. The main story arc follows Roland and company in their relentless pursuit of the Dark Tower. It is interesting and compelling and has kept me going strong through 4 long novels.
