Stephen Covey is one of the most prominent self help gurus with international best selling books, seminars and training programs. I am a particular fan of Covey because his books are usually grounded in established principles of human behavior.

While this book is listed in category of self help and business, I would consider it as a welcome addition to the area of psychology and Positive Psychology in particular.

The CIRCUIT is about the life of a boy named Panchito who illegally crosses the Mexican border into California with his family of four. He and his family work picking cotton and strawberries, to topping carrots, then moving back to pick cotton again. Panchito's family has to move from one labor camp to the next labor camp to keep working all summer and winter to just have enough money to get them through the year.

My favorite character in this book was Panchito because he was determined to go to school and learn English. When he enrolled in first grade he did not know any English and everyone laughed at him for that. He made a friend that knew a little Spanish and started to learn English. In the sixth grade he started to write down spelling rules and English words in a notepad that he always kept in his shirt pocket.

My niece was assigned to read this book at UCSanta Barbara. She shared it with me and I could NOT put it down. It ended as a cliffhanger and I wanted more! She told me there was a sequel so I immediately went to the first,second and finally third book store and found the sequel. Once finished, I wanted more! Another cliffhanger. That is when I went on Amazon to order the first book for my kids to read and then the third.Now I want to meet this professor. I so enjoyed reading about his life.

What's amazing is that this is a true story, true excerpts from the author's childhood. They are written without fluff and cheese, but the emotion is still strong and real. The translation of this book into spanish is "literary" literal.... I started to read it, but, as a spanish native speaker, it did not move me. It was not to my reading standard. The story line, didn't make sense sometimes.... Better stay with the english version. I got more out of the rich language of this book.
Good for english speakers, though! Who want the exact translation of the words.

I love this story, but the translation is not good. Several passages were changed from the English language version. The cause of a tantrum was alterted from a lack of ice cream to a too-small sandwich. A pet toad was changed to a tortoise/turtle. There were several other liberties taken in addition.
This is a good book, but a poor translation.

I read this book for my intermediate Spanish class, and I found it to be a wonderful challenge because it expanded my vocabulary and helped me uncover the different ways things can be taken in Spanish. I liked how poetic the book is, though it was a bit confusing at times. It gives great insight into the issues faced by women and the lower classes. It's especially a great novel for those who are from Chciago!

It is not often that I am left at a loss for what to say about a book. The Zahir has that quality that it impacts your soul without being able to describe the method. Coelho speaks of love, the freedom of love, commitment, relationships and obsession. In this way it is like many of his other works. Yet, the Zahir is different.

Not all love stories are the same. Love and relationships are not like a railway track - a set of standardized sizes, headed in one direction, unchanging, without the possibility of turning. Love is everything and nothing. It is like the wind - powerful, everywhere and nowhere. Through his autobiographical novel, Coelho takes the reader to the depths of their soul to reveal the nature of love. It cannot be possessed, clung to or consigned to a personal history. It must be lived and experienced in the now. It must be freely given and received. If read with the heart opened, the book will touch you.

Evaluación: - So bad, it made me hate the other Coelho books I previously liked
Title says it all I guess, I read decides to die and eleven minutes and enjoyed them very much. I picked up Zahir expecting it to be just as good.

But it is so self-involved, egotistical, and rambling. I came to strongly dislike the main character- and since this is supposedly a highly autobiographical work- the author. The weird philosophy/ worldview about love held no attraction for me at all.

The most disturbing part about it all was that the things that I liked about the previous two books were here in The Zahir- but were amplified to the point of being cloying and obnoxious. I felt I was being bashed over the head with a hammer by the same things I had been gently nudged by in the other works.

By the end, I was utterly Coelho-d out. I wish I had read The Alchemist first, since that is the one people seem to really like, but to be honest I don't think I can pick up another one of his books for a very long time, if ever.

I loved the Zahir. In the process of finding your soulmate you find yourself. Here is a woman who is prepared to lose her relationship to the man she loves because the relationship has reached its end - it has nowhere to go. In order for the relationship to move to a deeper more meaningful level a deepening of self is needed by the husband. It takes courage on the part of the woman not knowing whether she will as a result of leaving gain eventually a deepened relationship. In the meantime her husband finds many means of distraction as he is resisting the calling. Marvellous.

Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist - Gift Edition (Hardcover) is one of my favourite books. Every few years I pick it up again to reread. It's a classic fable--poetic and meaningful. A beautiful story about the value and magic inherent in following our dreams.

The Zahir (A Novel of Obsession) is completely different. It seems semi-autobiographical like many of Coelho's other books. In fact, the author states in The Zahir that any writer can only write about themselves. I extrapolate this to mean we can only deeply share that which we've personally experienced.

I love the book. I personally enjoy Coelho's openness about life as a best-selling author. And I've received much insight from his comments about expressing and releasing the past. Here are a couple ... Leer Más

Evaluación: - A surprisingly readable 300 year-old adventure, though the early 18th century evidently lacked editors
The name "Robinson Crusoe" readily conjures up images of a sad castaway on a desert island, who after years of solitude comes up a man's footprint in the sand. But in reading Daniel Defoe's novel of 1719, I was surprised how different the work is from its common stereotype. Not until about 50 pages in does Crusoe end up a castaway, having before hand some misadventures as a young sailor. Instead of washing up on his island with just the clothes on his back, he in fact is able to get a great many useful tools and implements from his still intact wreck. And the man's footprint, instead of being the sign of another Crusoe subsequently encounters, is just a sign that some cannibals from the mainland visit the island on occassion.

All in all ROBINSON CRUSOE is an entertaining novel, one with much adventure and intrigue. One gets a lot of pleasure from reading of how Crusoe turns the basic furnishings of the island to his own use, having by the end of his confinement there such things as cheese, ... Leer Más

Scribner has created a beautiful book in this edition. The illustrations are on heavy glossy paper and are magnificent. There are very nice, free readings of this work online, and so I purchased the book for my young children to enjoy - to read while listening to the narrator. My only complaint is the book is abridged. This is not evident from the description. I think most editions of this work are abridged. When the book ended, I was left wondering what became of Friday, as he is not mentioned again after the final battle. The author did not seem like one who would leave out that detail, and so I discovered the unabridged story is longer. Still, the quality of the book and the beauty of the illustrations are so very nice that I cannot knock a star off my review.

There are a lot of psychological and social theories about "Robinson Crusoe," but I just take it as a grand adventure. I loved all the details of how he survived after being shipwrecked on that island. Just remember that it was written in the seventeenth century so you have to get used to writing.

I have a warm place in my heart for Robinson Crusoe. Some fifty years ago in the second grade, my teacher read it to our class. Decades later, I told my wife about it, but she said that it was impossible. Robinson Crusoe is too difficult for a teacher to read to second graders.

Well, several years went by, and I was proved right. In a used bookstore, I bought a copy of "The Story of Robinson Crusoe in words of One Syllable," with "Colored Illustrations." The book was published in about 1900, and when my teacher read it to her class, the book was over fifty years old.
