Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Good Philosophy class
I just finished reading this book for my philosophy class and I would recommend it for someone who either has a strong understanding of Hindu/Buddhist beliefs or reading it with a group of people in which to discuss said novel. It is a deep work about the soul, the nature of suffering and the journey of self exploration. Do not read it if you do not like to think a night because the ideas will keep you up at times.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - ommmmm, stream of events, music of life
In our modern culture where most of things in life are categorized, judged, and people are forced to take sides, this book brings more harmonious and contiuous perspectives on life. In this short, poetic, and simple stories of Siddhartha, Vasudeva, and Govinda, streams of their life events, just like the teachings of the river, bring them to realization of interconnections of all things, experiences, thoughts and feelings, both Samsara and Nirvana in the music of life. A wonderful and insightful read.

Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - Dang English Teachers!!!
A pox on every English department and English Instructor that pushed this book on me every year in High School and in College and withheld GK Chesterton from me only to discover him years after my academic career ended. A POX ON ALL OF YOU!!!!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Valuable work well worth your time.
In a nutshell the "Siddhartha" is a story of man's eternal quest for ultimate happiness and tranquility. Like with many other books that I have liked, at first the story seemed to me somewhat corny and not so thrilling, but I hopefully kept on going and after a little while found myself deeply immersed with the plot and ideas that are elaborated with much elegance and clarity. A central idea to which Hesse is leading(or so it seems to me), is that of unity or oneness of the world. According to main hero our world is conveniently separated into pieces, people are stratified as good or evil, young or old etc, etc. But the underlying reality is that of one indestructible, undeniable, ever-flowing, self-repeating, timeless world, a wold of change and stability at the same time. For instance the idea of unity is nicely demonstrated by main hero Siddhartha by telling his old friend that everything that happens is predetermined, that there is no free will, that we are not shaping our destiny with ... Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Very Accessable Wisdom
Hesse poses and answers the great philosophical and religious questions for everyman in a mere 100 pages. He fairly outlines the various paths to knowledge, wisdom and salvation in the life of Siddhartha and his friend Govinda, a classic pair of seekers. Eastern and Western, classic and modern answers are considered and lived.
There is no simple answer to the question "what is the meaning of life?" or "how do I lead a good life?"
Simple asceticism and hedonism don't work. Escapism does not work. Following a religious tradition or leader are only partial answers. The path for one person is different from the path for others. Random and unexplained events are inherent in life. Wisdom is learned through experience rather than from texts. We often don't know what we don't know. Appearances may be deceiving, but the underlying form or soul is not everything.
The solitary individual can not learn meaning or control his own life. The community, friends and family are necessary ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 2 out of 5 stars - INCREDIBLY slow unless you understand the symbolism
To understand the book, it's a good idea to understand the meaing behind colors and to identify the pages where the colors appear and how they correlate with the books content and overall message. This is not a novel that is simply an enjoable read. Constant analyzation and understanding is needed throughout the process of reading it. Only after understanding does the novel become a literary classic and icon.

Great book! I read it once and would love to read it again. I like Fitzgeralds style very much. I highly recommend it.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - The Great Gatsby
I always wanted to read The Great Gatsby but for some reason or another it always eluded me. Back in college, almost everyone had read this "great" masterpiece of literature. I'm glad I finally had the opportunity to sink my teeth into this novel and see once and for all what it was all about.

The story was wonderful to read and its subject matter was appealing for the most part. The industrial age must of been a sight to behold. The author does an adequate job of detailing the age and the times of West Egg. Although the lavishness and splendor of the many parties that took place in West Egg were nicely detailed, I found the imagery somewhat sparse and lacking detail at times. The author does a great job of portraying his characters and their morals but for some reason I didn't find this in itself to capture my attention. The story line was so-so in my opinion and could of been better. But in the end, this novel was worth the read. I'm happy I had the opportunity to finally have read ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - LOVE IT
I'm not sure if it's possible to not like this book. It's eloquently written and interesting. A classic love story, that will remain timeless. If you were forced to read it in high school and didn't like it I suggest a quick revisit to the timeless tale. It was wonderful. I'd recommend it to anyone and since it's a short book it only takes a weekend to get through.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - So glad I read this again after high school
I remember reading The Great Gatsby in my high school English class and thinking it was boring. In retrospect, I think I was an idiot. Reading it ten years later was a truly amazing experience. Fitzgerald lays down some stunning prose and brings a lavish era of American history to life. I was struck with how that culture of excess in the 1920s seemed eerily similar to the mid 2000s. . . and right before another crash, nonetheless. Great book. If you tried to read it once and failed, try again. You won't regret it.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Probably the Best in the series!
I think this is my favorite book of the series! This is the book where all the stories of the characters really start to come out and the action starts. I really enjoyed getting the back stories of more of the characters. This I think is one of the most entertaining of them all and I would totally recommend it.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Loves Triangle
I enjoyed "Eclipse" the best out of the saga. Bella finally comes clean about her feelings for Jacob. Edward & Jacob work together to save Bella.
The danger that comes to Forks & wanting to see who "Bella"chooses makes this a page turner.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Eclipse (3d in the Twilight Series)
I was not certain that Ms. Meyers could continue this story as well she has. While this is the weakest of the books (my opinion), it is still very, very good. Like the other two books, this book is written well and easy to read. It seems to be a trend for me, but I read this book in one day and then read it again the next week, just like the other two. All three are as good the second time around as they are the first. i am highly impressed with Ms. Meyer's ability to continue the story line, answer questions from the previous books and keep you wanting more and more. Very addicting for one who likes to read high quality fiction. Once again, I highly recommend reading this series.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Kept waiting for Victoria to hurry up and kill Bella
Cons: Sometimes you have to read a book for what it is and stop trying to say what you'd do in that situation. But other times it's very difficult to decipher between the two, and this book was one of those times. I honestly just wanted somebody to kill Bella so she'd stop whining. I don't remember her being this pitiful in the movie, but she was pathetic in the book. She was so glued to Edward's side that I wondered why she didn't ask him to wipe her after she used the bathroom, too. I can't tolerate weak female characters, which is probably why I love Alice, Victoria and Jane so much. They're strong characters who don't take any B.S. from anybody and know how to control themselves. Bella spent 75 percent of the book crying, screaming for Edward, begging for him to be wherever she was, running to hug him, trying to bribe him into having sex with her and manipulating Jacob. She had no outside interests and seemed to live suffocatingly on Earth just to be with Edward...and Jacob. I wanted to reach right ... Leer Más

Spoilers and a load of Twilight bashing is ahead

I've hated Twilight forever now. The books are boring and plotless, with no conflicts or no meaning to it. Bella is selfish, whiny, dull, backstabbing, heartless, and as boring as the books are. Edward is a stalker and an obsessive boyfriend. Jacob is love-sick puppy dog with nothing better to do but whine about his non-connection with Bella. Charlie is as dead as the fish he brings home from his endless fishing trips. Renee is airheaded. Every character`has a large amount of flaws to make Bella seemingly perfect despite her rediculous clumsiness.

Eclipse plot- If there even IS a plot here. Bella is supposadly in love with Edward and Jacob. But it is so obvious who she is going to pick this book isnt even needed. Meanwhile, Victoria is putting together a newborn vampire army in order to kill Bella, to get back at Edward for killing James. That of course means every vampire and werewolf in Forks has to protect Bella. Along ... Leer Más

My daughter had to read this book over the summer for a grade in her Honors English class. I liked the fact that it was cheap, but on the other hand, what I paid for shipping I could have went ahead and purchased it out of the store. I wasn't to thrilled about that!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Mistake below -- This is the BEST edition
There are a gazillion ebook editions of Frankenstein out there. Frankenstein This Penguin Classics version is a fantastic ebook -- not just of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, but I mean the ebook formatting.

First, this is a scholarly edition. It contains so much reference information, it's a history lesson in itself.

It's loaded with linked footnotes that toggle -- click to read the footnote, then click again to be immediately back at your place in the book. Fantastic.

A cheap edition of this book is a waste of your time - plus you would be robbing yourself of the very best an ebook can offer.

I don't know who formatted this edition of Frankenstein -- and just to be sure, it's ASIN: B000OIZT9A -- but they deserve an award.

Evaluación: 2 out of 5 stars - Not brand new, when they said it was new.
The book (that was purchased) wasn't in the condition stated by the seller. I could have bought a better book with the price I paid for this book.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Sad Story Indeed
The language can be hard to comprehend at times, sometimes because it is truly incoherent or stilted. Even so, there are far more passages that read so well it is like smelling a fragrant flower, the descriptions so clear and detailed yet eloquently stated. However, it's hard to rate this book above three stars because near the end I really had a hard time following it. It seemed the monster had died. Frankenstein came upon a sledge and his nemesis was dead, or so it said. Following that, the plot became nebulous and the passages were so exasperating I skipped many paragraphs until the point where Dr. Frankenstein had died, not the monster. Then I had...the rest of the story. But on the plus side, the plot was not predictable. With so many pluses, and so many minuses, I rate this story three stars.

Perhaps one day we will be able to use DNA material to recreate a Neanderthal, creating a true to life Frankenstenian monster.

My edition was close to the original, if not the original ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - A Gothic Masterpiece.
This haunting masterpiece still reaches new readers every day. I won't go into the details of Shelly's masterpiece in this review, but deal in what I think makes this a timeless classic that hangs on to readers today.

The character of Victor Frankenstein, a man obsessed with making a difference in the studies of life and death. It is his blind devotion to his studies over life and death, that leads to tragedy for his family and friends later in the story. Shelly takes us on a journey that shows us the frailty of our lives and the motives that drive us to achieve no matter the cost. Victor, even though he is a character, is within everyone. He is the blind ambition that throws away love for the sake of fame and immortality, and the utter lack of responsibility for his actions once the deed is done. This character is versatile, because it lingers in people, perhaps even someone you know.

Just as haunting is Victor's creation, the Monster. Racked with questions about his identity and guilt for ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - this book is a monster
I've read excerpts here and there. I saw the movie years ago. But I never read the book until now; the book is a monster. This is not a work of pure art or beauty, but it is a masterpiece of ideas and imagination. It is deliberate and powerful and still totally relevant. In a way it's a political treatise disguised as a novel, and it will have you nodding your head as you consider the state of the world today - perpetual war, sophisticated systems of propaganda, distorted news, doublespeak, the surveillance state... the list of parallels goes on and on.

It is also a masterful novel, aside from the brilliance of Orwell's ideas. When the telescreen "surprised" Winston and Julia, I almost fell out of my chair.

Certainly not a fun read, it is grim and bleak and wretched. I have to wonder what possessed Orwell to conceive such a hellish world. But boy is it convincing. Some of the violence seems almost gratuitous, as if he was taking some perverse pleasure in it. But again it works so well.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - This is a book that I intend to read again.
I've always heard about this book. In my English classes the Sci-Fi geeks would do nothing but rave about it. At work, the conspiracy theorists use it as a jumping off platform. And, for me, it was a good read. I loved many of the powerful descriptions; things like, "...and they would sit around the table looking at one another with extinct eyes, like ghost fading at cock crow." I do have to admit that I thought the book had its dull moments, and that other times I thought it was terrifyingly harsh. By the end, I found myself sort of lost in the things unsaid. And, finally, at the last sentence, I realized that the book that had taken me so long to read because of lack of time, was stunning. I finished in it the morning, and by that evening, I was reeling over Winston's bullet. This is a book that I intend to read again. I hope that I am able to devote myself to it next time. One more note to myself: Blair (Orwell) must have set out writing this story with the ending already set out in front of him. I don't think he could ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Inconspicuously Comforting
After seeing the movie "Charlie St. Cloud" I wondered if the book might be better (as most books are better than their movie adaptations) but I was also skeptical of the book for the movie was very Nicholas Sparks-ish - which I'm not a fan of - and so I figured the book would be simliar.

However, I gave The Life and Death of Charlie St. Cloud a whirl and I was more than pleasantly suprised. I am a young adult struggling with ideas of spirituality and death etc. and these issues give me anxiety from time to time. To someone like me, the story of Tess, Charlie, and Sam just flat out made me feel good about it all.

The world Mr. Sherwood writes is inconspicuously comforting in that you're not overwhelmed by schmaltzy sappy prose but It's beautifully written in a neat, easy to read way which allows the story and characters to almost sneak up on - not overpower you with melodrama. Before you can even realize it you're invested in the characters and story as if you knew them personally.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Perfect life and love story
I truly loved this book and couldn't put it down once I started. I absolutely recommend it.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - BELIEVE
It is so very difficult to review a book with such a subject as this one. It truly is a masterpiece, but it seems so simple in its'subject. A subject that has been reviewed, talked about, preached on, terrified us, made us understand, and made us both happy, sad and of course, confused.

Where do we go when we die? Forget all that you have heard or read or that Mom and Dad told you about, because, this tiny little novel just may have the real answer. If Ben Sherwood is correct in his story, we are not really living life, as alive human beings, the living starts after we die.

Can't claim that I cried or was amazingly moved by this novel, but it WILL stick with me for a long, long time, as we all wonder what it might be like on the other side. And if it is not what Charlie and Sam found it to be, maybe a bit different or maybe nothingness, it won't make a world of difference because we will have ceased to live among our friends and loved ones. Truly a good read.

I wish that I had been able to read this book as part of a class or a group discussion, as there were many things alien to my time period I should have liked to have had explained to me.
That said, it was an important book to have read, if only to give the reader a picture of what life was like in that time and place.
I think that had I been Hester Prynne, I'd have moved away from that town immediately.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - One of my least favorite english reads.
Like most people I was forced to read this novel in my English class. While I did enjoy it eventually it does have a very slow beginning. It has a good plot though and is a great way to understand the period in which Hawthorne wrote.
In my opinion this novel has one major flaw; metaphors. Yes most novels employ literary elements yet Hawthorne goes over board. He will give you a metaphor, give you another metaphor the same thing in case you didn't understand the first one; he will then flat out explain what the metaphor was. After a few chapters of this it gets very tedious and continues on through the book. The metaphors are not difficult to understand, yet he will often give long drawn out metaphors that may take over a page.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Of Sin and Secrets
Is "The Scarlet Letter" worthy of being considered a classic? Why do some love it and some hate it? These are questions that played through my mind when I picked up this book. I'm a fan of some of Hawthorne's short stories--"Ethan Brand," "The Bosom Serpent," "Young Goodman Brown," among others--but I found his novel, "The House of the Seven Gables," long and plodding.

Boy, was I in for a surprise!

Yes, this book employs an antiquated style of English dialogue and sentence structure. True, the introductory chapter about the Custom-House can seem tedious. (And, if your edition comes with a modern introduction, please skip it till after you've read the book, since many of these misguided pages give away the book's key twists.) Once I got into the actual story, though, I was hooked. I took my time. I invested in each page, each paragraph, giving myself to the story of Hester Prynne, a woman whose child out of wedlock has revealed her adultery and subjected her with a lifetime of wearing a red A upon her chest, ... Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - There must be something in books
Books are dangerous. They're full of ideas that make people think about the world, feel passion, and perhaps act out. That's not good for society; it causes conflict, uprising, and interference with the status quo. People who read and think scare people who don't, so most citizens have happily given up the right to decide what to think about and now let the government fill their brains with constant loud mindless entertainment. This managed input has equalized society; nobody feels inferior to anyone else and there's no conflict anymore. Dull minds, constant entertainment, and conformity make society run smoothly.

Guy Montag works as a fireman. He burns books at night while his wife sits in her parlor and listens to inane media shows at high volume. But Clarice, the teenager next door, is different. Her family sits around and talks. They discuss things and they laugh with each other. Guy wonders what they talk about as he watches his wife talk to the strangers on TV and pop sleeping pills...

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Brilliant, depressing, electrifying, profound!!
Ray Bradbury's books make for immediate, mesmerizing, entirely compulsive reading. His prose is electrifying in its use of poetic metaphor and dramatic syntax. The reader is instantly plunged into an alien culture, or a terrifying future, and is not really released even after the last page is turned.

I had been postponing reading this novel for years. I am, after all, a confirmed bibliophile. Reading a novel with a plot involving the burning of books would, I kept telling myself, be too traumatic for me.

I finally decided to wade in.

Need I say that I only put the book down when I absolutely had to, when reality intruded? The novel carried me along on its relentless wave of narrative. Of course, I tried not to picture the books burning as I read, but Bradbury wouldn't let me. Not when he was describing them as living creatures, dying, their pigeon wings flapping.... The fact that I managed to endure this at all is a real tribute to the greatness of his writing.

The characters are indelibly ... Leer Más

This book is all about one man's struggle against the status quo- even more frightening for him because he lives in a world where firemen are not the rescuers but the fire starters. They rush to houses not to put out fires but to burn them, and only those that hold the most heinous crimes against the state- books.

Guy Montag did his duty as a fireman till one day a girl- a free thinker- held a dandelion under his chin and woke him up.

His world turned upside down he made a stand and then had to run for his life- watched all the while by inhabitants of the city glued to their wall tv sets, numbed and dumbed down by the very thing that holds them enthralled.

Yet, Montag makes his escape, becoming more important than he ever could have realized while his world disintegrates around him- literally.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Timeless
I just finished reading this book for the third time and it simply gets better with age, like a vintage wine. How can we picture a world where there are no books, particularly novels?

Like most of us on Amazon, I'm a voracious reader and have been since I was in elementary school. Books transport us to another world and allow us to have insight into lives, situations other countries that we may never otherwise experience. Good books pose tough questions about ethics, coping with adversity, and dealing with loss, sorrow or facing hard choices -- for example, Sophie's Choice, when she had to choose between which one of her children she would save from the Nazis.

When I was 19 and I first read this book, I thought it was just about banning books. I didn't fully comprehend the depth of mind control that would be involved in restricting information, and consequently creating a reality that is so sanitized that it bears no resemblance to real life. No wonder people were glued to the flatscreen TVs and hooked on mood altering substances ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Woman of Great Importance
Jane Eyre is a masterpiece.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. The protagonist, Jane, is narrating her biography, and the chronicle commences when she was ten years old, growing up with her cruel aunt and equally cruel cousins, who make her childhood miserable. She could hardly wait to get out of their grip to a school for orphanages, run by a saintly woman. There she befriends a girl, Amy, a noble and true friend, dying of consumption. Jane thrives in the school, later becoming a teacher for two years.

But the real drama unfolds when she gets a job as a tutor for a young girl, Adel, a protege of Mr. Rochester, a wealthy bachelor. They fall in love and Mr. Rochester proposes marriage. But he forgets to tell Jane a minor point that he was already married to a insane woman, locked up in the same manor! Jane bolts home and a new adventure unfolds, meets her long lost cousins, finds enormous fortune and dodges her cousin's advances to marry and go on to India to preach! She wants none of this austere life. She misses her love and returns ... Leer Más

I am soooo disappointed with this book. After reading all the glowing reviews, I expected more. The story is boring. It just points out various things in a room, then proceeds to say "good night" to all the objects in the room. The illustrations not impressive, and every 2 pages alternate between black/white and color. I've been reading this to my daughter since she was very young (now 14 months old), but she's never really been that interested in it.
