Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - It harrows me with fear and wonder
"Hamlet" doesn't need any introduction -- the tortured Dane, the ghost, meditations on suicide and a climax full of death. But as well-known as the storyline is, the play itself is what deserves the attention, both for Shakespeare's shadowy plot filled with uncertainty and treachery -- and for his brilliant, immortal writing, which takes on a new dimension when read on the page.

Prince Hamlet of Denmark is understandably upset when, only a short time after his father's death, his mother Gertrude marries his uncle Claudius, who is now the new king. Who wouldn't be unhappy? But when Hamlet encounters the tormented ghost of his father ("I am thy father's spirit/Doom'd for a certain term to walk the night"), he learns that his dad was murdered by his uncle -- but he's plagued by indecision, since he's unsure if the spirit was truly his dad.

In response to this vision, Hamlet's behavior becomes more bizarre and erratic -- he dumps his girlfriend Ophelia, arranges ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - The Mighty, Elusive Dane
"Hamlet" is for everybody, but not for everybody to enjoy equally. The sad truth is I am one of those who have come, through some application, to feel real appreciation for the play, yet never loved it. The fault is mine and not Shakespeare's, but it is an honest fault worth exploring.

The story is pretty straightforward on its face. The king of Denmark has died, and as his son Hamlet fights overwhelming grief, he comes to discover the father died at the hand of his successor, Hamlet's uncle Claudius. As he contemplates the enormity of this knowledge, he wrestles with the fact his friends and court advisors are in league with the uncle. Even Hamlet's mother has compromised her connection with him by marrying Claudius soon after being widowed. Through all this turmoil a cosmic consciousness slowly emerges in young Hamlet.

"There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio/Than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

It's that cosmic consciousness that's ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - This is NOT a book, this is a PLAY
Just so all of you are aware, Shakespeare was not in the practice of writing "books". He was a playwright, so when you go ahead and say that this "book" was boring, or hard to follow, make sure you realize that what you have in front of you is dialogue never intended to be read by the public, but only seen on stage. This gives the words more power and more accessibility. If someone reads you the To Be or Not To Be soliloquy aloud, you will understand it far better than a first glance at the text.

I would simply state that for many in this day and age, reading Hamlet is a very difficult undertaking. We are not trained in this language, and can hardly tie our attentions down for a 10 line speech, let alone the so-called "ranting" discourses that take place in this play. This does not make the material worse, it makes us inferior to the text. The play touches on themes that every person must face at some point, love, familial duty, vengeance, politics, friendship and betrayal. ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Another excellent Oxford World's Classics edition
Note that this review refers to the Oxford World's Classics edition of Hamlet. Amazon does a really terrible job of sorting out which editions of Shakespeare plays are the same and which are different, so this review will almost certainly be referred where it does not belong.

This edition, like most of the Oxford World's Classics Shakespeare editions, is outstanding. The introduction is a good solid read and the editor is a very good writer (a quality which, though often overlooked, really makes or breaks an annotated edition). His references and notes are keen and illuminating and occasionally betray a wry sense of humour. Plenty of room in the margins for notes, as I found out taking a ridiculously intense seminar on this play and Joyce's Ulysses this semester. This play is truly Shakespeare's masterpiece, and this edition eminently does it justice.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - satisfied but not thrilled
The description of the book said that it was used, but in near-new condition with no markings. It was a bit worn and there was writing and highlighting throughout most of the play. Then again for four dollars what can one expect? I needed a book and thats what i got.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - 4 and 1/2 Stars -- An Incredible Drama
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is one of the greatest post-World War II dramas, the play that made Edward Albee's name and has become a modern classic, still popular and riveting in various stage and film adaptations. Though the kind of play that can become truly superlative when well acted, it also reads better than nearly any other drama, making it a feast in all forms.

The main asset is incredibly high emotional pitch. Though the play has but four characters, one setting, and almost no conventional action, intensity peaks early and hardly lets up until the highly-wrought finale. Perhaps no dramatist since Henrik Ibsen has been able to keep things at such a fever pitch regardless of what is happening. Simply impossible to ignore, the play grabs attention almost immediately and never lets go; it not only engrosses us but practically forces us to be engrossed. Few dramas act so skillfully on our emotions; Who's Afraid makes our hearts beat with excitement and runs us through ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - This is the most atrocious play ever created
Do anything you can to avoid reading or seeing this play seeing as it is the most horrible thing ever written.
It is not a masterful play in the slightest. It is just arguing and yelling. Constantly. It does not come close to exploring the meaning of the American marriage or any other B.S. such as that.
It is terrible. Do not buy. Death is better.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Albee's Greatest Work
If you aren't famliar with Edward Albee, this play is a great way to introduce yourself. This play tells the tale of George (a professor) and his wife, Martha (the daughter of the university president), who have invited a new professor and his wife to their house for late-night cocktails. As Nick and Honey come to learn, George and Martha dance a very fine line between contempt and love, and their unique expression of that love can, at times, be disturbing. Albee's exploration of the very complex relationships among the fascinating characters in this play makes it perhaps the greatest work he has ever written. This play not only contains some of the best dialogue Albee has ever written, but the story, while dark and disturbing, is also engaging.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - A Wonderful and Light Austen Read!
I have always loved "Sense and Sensibility" and wanted to expand into more of Austen's works. This one did not disappoint! It is a fantastic tale with all the usual Austen humor and wittiness that work so well in her stories! In fact, it is now up there with "Sense" as my favorite Austen work!

"Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her."

The first sentence in the novel really sets the stage for all the mistakes the main character makes throughout! This novel tells the story of Emma Woodhouse, a privileged young lady who, with nothing else to occupy her time, loves matchmaking among her friends. She loves it so much that she doesn't pay any attention to her true love right under her nose! Of course things don't go the way Emma would like and there are the usual misunderstandings ... Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Emma means well, but...
***spoiler alert *** I didn't expect to like this book, because lots of readers usually mention how annoying and meddlesome Emma Woodhouse is. But I liked Emma. There's no anxious, annoying mother trying to marry off all of her daughters, because, unlike a lot of Austen heroines, Emma doesn't have to worry about marrying for money or marrying at all. She's already rich and happy and has a big house of her own. She's independent. Sure she meddles and gossips and is really bad at matchmaking, but she does all this wit...more I didn't expect to like this book, because lots of readers usually mention how annoying and meddlesome Emma Woodhouse is. Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Emma--another entertaining Austen soap opera
If you liked Pride and Prejudice, this will probably amuse you, but it's not quite as memorable. The characters are hilarious and the plot twist rather unpredictable. I enjoyed it a great deal.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Exquisite
Jane Austen's Emma was published in December 1815, when she was forty years old (just 19 months before she died). It is thus a work of her mature period, and is something of a favorite among her devotees.

My admiration of Austen's work is partly for her insight into human nature but also for the sheer beauty of her prose. It has a poetic texture. Her sentences can be long and complex, with some confusion of pronouns, so that they need to be lingered on, their sense teased out of them, until their structure and meaning is revealed, exactly as one would do with poetry. The effect is immensely satisfying.

She spends almost no time on descriptions of place, but when she does she shows herself capable of describing a scene succinctly and effectively. Her main focus is on character. She describes her characters and their motivation at length, and reveals them through dialogue. This emphasis on dialogue makes her work eminently suitable for dramatization, so it is no surprise ... Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the all time greats, now shockingly out of print!
Just to add my voice to the choir: Quite simply one of the best films
about romantic relationships ever made. Brilliantly written.
Brilliantly acted -- Diane Keaton is tremendous, the supporting cast is
full of gems and Allen himself takes the leap to present himself as a
real (if funny) human being and not a walking joke. And brilliantly
photographed by the great Gordon Willis of 'The Godfather' and many of
most important films of the 70s and 80s.

Wildly funny and ultimately heartbreaking. It's hard to imagine anyone
who has ever been in love, or struggled through grown-up relationships
NOT identifying with a lot of this film. I loved it in my late teens
when it first came out, and I love it even more 32 years later. Every
time I see it I notice different details, depending on my own current
life experiences. A film of enormous wit, humor, invention, and
understanding of the human heart. Its completely unique, playful ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Woody Allen's Annie Hall explores new dimensions of the persona Allen has constructed in movies, on the stage, and even in a
...comic strip. We're all familiar by now with "Woody," the overanxious, underachieving intellectual with the inept social life. We've watched him develop from bits in a stand-up comedy routine to a fully developed comic character in the tradition of Chaplin's tramp or Fields's drunk. We know how "Woody" will act in so many situations that we're already laughing before the punch line. Maybe nobody since Jack Benny has been so hilariously predictable.
And yet there's always the realization that "Woody" is a projection of a real Woody Allen. That beneath the comic character is a certain amount of painful truth. That just as W.C. Fields really was a drunk, so Woody Allen perhaps really is insecure about his height, shy around girls, routinely incompetent in the daily joust with life.
It's not that the "real" Woody Allen is as hapless as his fictional creation, but that the character draws from life by exaggerating it. Annie Hall is the closest Allen has come to dealing with that real material. It's ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - A review of the product more than the film itself
...Because if you're interested in buying this video you surely have seen AH by now, and even if you haven't, there are plenty of other reviews on this page that discuss plot, jokes, etc.

I just want to comment on the DVD itself, and the packaging. For someone who is reportedly so particular about how his films are treated, it's amazing that Woody Allen has allowed such a shabby dub to pass through. This is a garden-variety print of AH with sections that look like they were dragged across the floor. Even those annoying little "dots" at the end of a scene that tells the projectionist of a reel change have been left in. This is the only DVD in my whole 100+ collection that has this ancient artifact.

This version of AH is *not* anamorphic! That's just mind-blowing to me, and it degrades the picture quality still further if you're watching on HD equipment.

As with Woody's DVDs, there is no commentary and no extras, aside from a trailer. Oddly, for such a short film, it's ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Best Actors & Best Screenplay
If I had to choose only one movie to be my all time favorite, this would be it. In fact, before I was married, I used to secretly "test" people I was dating and rent this movie and watch it with them. If they thouroughly enjoyed the film and also laughed at all the right moments, they "passed" the test. (Yes, my husband DID pass the test.) If they failed the test, they were a waste of my time.

In my opinion, the film is pure brilliance. It is witty and a wonderful characature of neurosis, men and women relationships, New York City, California, and the time it took place in. I love that Woody always has his character being with these very beautiful young women.

Everything about the movie cracks me up...from the waiting in line to see a film, the counseling visits, the subtitles for the male v. female thinking, the bug in the bathroom, the sprouts and mashed yeast, the children announcing what they will be when they grow up, the "universe is expanding" fear, the sneezing on the cocaine, ... I'm reading this play (in Spanish) in my Pre-AP Spanish class. It's really quite moving, and I think that it's easy to read as long as you've taken at least three years of high school Spanish or Spanish is your first language. Unfortunately, I don't know how good the translation is, but the original is extremely powerful. I'd definitely recommend the play for older readers.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - andamos a ciegas
My contempory Spanish lit class at Vanderbilt read this play, and I thought it was a truly masterful piece of work. Aside from the contemporary political themes touched upon, this play also serves as a marvelously crafted religious alegory; Ignatius serves as a strong Christ-figure, and is just as persistent in his mission to point out the foly and blindness of others who will not accept it. En la ardiente oscuridad" adresses a universal theme, our "sentimiento tragico de la vida," to use Unamuno's phrase. This play is for anyone who is tempted to deny his or her own blindness; it is also for anyone who struggles daily with the conflict between comfort and truth; it is also for those who love the teachings of Christand his quest to reveal spiritual blindness wherever he found it. Read this play.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - A Compelling and Frightening Drama
Playwright Peter Shaffer is an exceptional dramatist. His characters are unforgettable, and each one is dealing with a psychological struggle. In "Amadeus," Shaffer examines seventeenth century Vienna and the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his rival, court composer Antonio Salieri. This play shatters the view of Mozart as an innocent child prodigy, and instead paints a picture of a childish, scatologically minded, yet ultimately tormented musical genius. Trapped by the financial demands that are placed upon him, and the demands of a domineering father, Mozart strives to make his music and to be excepted.
The main focus of the play is upon Salieri, whom the audience sees as a sweetmeat loving, conniving schemer who is appalled by Mozart's new ideas and manner. However, Salieri is not one demensional. He is a sympathetic character, who wrestles with his conscience. Feeling betrayed by a god who shows favoritism, he recounts his desire to make music that will provide him with unsurpassable fame. ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Who will pray for the world's mediocrities?
When I was younger, I almost never reread anything. My hunger was so voracious that I gobbled up a book and then rapaciously moved on to the next. But as I've aged, I read less frantically, returning again and again to a few works that especially move me. At the top of the list of such works are the plays of Peter Shaffer. And at the top of that list is his masterpiece "Amadeus."

What I find remarkable about Shaffer's "Amadeus" isn't so much the title character, Mozart, as the character who becomes Mozart's nemesis, Antonio Salieri. Salieri is one of the great tragic figures in literature. He's an individual who appears to genuinely love musical beauty, and who genuinely wants to dedicate his life to it. (In an early scene, for example, he makes a deal with God. "Signore," he begs, "let me be your flute, your mouthpiece. Let me produce absolute beauty. In return, I'll be your slave.") But Salieri is also a hopeless mediocrity. He knows good music when he hears it, but he's simply unable ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Spiritual Vs. Material
Peter Shaffer's award-winning and highly popular play AMADEUS is in many ways a morality play but seen through the eyes of a complicated postmodern villain. The play is called AMADEUS but the chief character of the story is Antonio Salieri. Salieri is the Court Composer for Emperor Joseph II of Austria during the end of the 18th Century. He is held in esteem not only by the Emperor and Court, but by the masses as well. Then Amadeus Mozart makes his way to the Austrian Court at Salzburg and Salieri recognizes in the young man a musical genius superior to anything musical he has ever heard. He becomes enraged with bitter jealousy. Feeling that God has abandoned him and given the talent that he has trained to develop and possess his entire life, Salieri declares a war against God that he will fight on the battleground that is Amadeus Mozart.

AMADEUS is a fantastic play. Author Peter Shaffer has revised the play several times since its first performance in 1979 and this version of the show (written ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Well, then, there it is...
Like a newspaper article, theatre has to convey its story with an economy of words.

In this way, great playwriting is a rare skill much like land the penny toss at the carnival and Shaffer is that rare playwriter who accomplishes his task so seemingly effortlessly.

Deftly, Shaffer tosses his Amadeus and Saliere together and in so doing plays each against their type rendering his Amadeus into the simple squeezebox which provides the background for the languid single note of Saliere's mournful jealousy.

What's so amazing is that in telling us the story of Amadeus' art, Shaffer shares important insights about his own. Don't have too many or too few notes but just the right number. Don't be so flashy in being good that people concentrate on the flashiness instead of the point.

And don't become so engrossed in your art that you lose sight of the ultimate ends it was meant to service in the first place.

Whether we are each more Amadeus or more Saliere we ... Leer Más

I have been introducing famous artists and movements from realism to Impressionism and more and the children love looking through this book and may more to find out information and to have a closer look at certain paintings. I would only buy this book for children if they have a real interest in learning about Art. As a teacher resource it is brilliant.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Stunning introduction to fine art for kids (and anyone) - puts the focus on the details.
This isn't a book for little kids (although little kids might enjoy looking at it). It's a big colorful book with lots of eclectic art masterpieces - from the Renaissance to the conceptual modern sculpture - with thoughtful analysis and wealth of break out images highlighting particular details and concepts. The analysis text is pitched at smart late elementary aged kids (2nd-3rd grade through 7th, I'd say). I found I was getting a lot out of it too. I love the variety and pacing of the artistic selections. The radical changes page to page with keep kids' attention. The breadth helps introduce kids to the broad spectrum of art. The focus on detail, analysis, and comprehension helps convey to kids the language and forms of art appreciation. Any kid will find this at least diverting. For certain kids - the ones who have a special affinity for art - this book will be a revelation and might change their lives. Highly recommended.

I checked this out from the library and kept it so long, I decided I needed to have my own copy. I am purchasing it, not only for myself and children to look at and discover the art, but as a resource for art projects at the camp I work for. It gets your wheels turning about all the different media and types of art.
