Clearly the guy that wrote about exercising being the only method of losing weight as never tried this book. Its not a diet, but a complete life style change. I have only been on it for a week so I am still in the strict phase, but I have already lost 6 pounds. I feel better about myself and I have more energy. My mother told me about the author and how she had a cooking show in Cuba. She made the author sound like the Martha Stewart of Havana when it came to the kitchen. I was so happy to find this book, which contains a number of the recipies that my mother used and I thought were gone forever.

It is a small world, when someone who lives in the US and is visiting Spain, is able to buy a book from Amazon to give his cousin's wife. The book is a traditional Cuban recipes cookbook. Nitza Villapol could be considered a Betty Crocker or Julia Childs. I ordered the book in my cousin's house in Madrid and his wife received in less than three weeks. This book is one of the most well known Cuban recipes cookbook (if not the best known) and I was really glad to be able to get it through Amazon in Spain.

I may be repeating what others have said ... but I became familiar with this book when I was growing up. I remember making Tembleque using this book as a kid, and it came out wonderful.

My mom used this book as her main cookbook -- and when she gave it away instead of giving it to my sister and I we got really angry (because we wanted the book)! I'm planning to replace it as soon as I get a chance.

The cookbook definitely has traditional puerto rican cooking. The recipes are great.

We live in Honduras and I have a maid/cook. I was desperate for a cookbook that had American recipes that she could understand. She has made 4 recipes out of this book and they all turned out wonderful. Its perfect because I can buy the ingredients off of the english side and she can cook off of the spanish side. T.S. Eliot is best known for his modern absurdist poetry, which deftly painted landscapes and characters both grim and gorgeous. His attempts at drama seem much more of a mixed bag. While I greatly enjoyed "Murder in the Cathedral", I was not so amused with "The Cocktail Party".

Eliot delves right into the action in Act I, with a small party of guests conversing in Edward Chamberlayne's London flat. Their host is distracted, and after all of the guests leave, he confesses his problem to an unidentified guest, that his wife has just left him. The unidentified guest mysteriously assures him that his wife will return the next day, as indeed she does. They each wind up meeting with a psychological consultant, who turns out to be the unidentified guest from the party. Through his circular questioning and the insights of their friends, he is able to convince the pair to find the answers for their ailments.

The piece may be considered a precursor to Edward Albee's works. The opening is the Chamberlaynes' flat. Julia occupies the center of the storytelling. Edward is the host. Julia describes herself as a tough old woman. Edward claims his wife Lavinia is tending an old aunt in the depths of Essex.

After most of the guests exit, Edward is left with the unidentified guest. It is learned that Lavinia has actually left Edward. Edward is told to resign himself to feeling ridiculous. Alex and Peter return. Peter is concerned about his friend, Celia. Alex doesn't want Edward to be alone.

Celia then contacts Edward. She understands that Lavinia has left him. Edward fails to watch the dinner on the stove that Alex cooks for him and it is ruined. Julia returns. In a world of appearances, a new species of peace-makers has been invented. The priest of old has disappeared. The psychiatrist has replaced him. Although this play of 1950 was Eliot's first full-length comedy, he had made an earlier stab at the genre in the 1920s: "Sweeney Agonistes," a first-rate work that unfortunately remained unfinished and is now included in collections of Eliot's poetry. "Sweeney" was a jazzy, dark comedy with originality and verve; by comparison, "The Cocktail Party" is tepid indeed.

Even judged on its own merits, however, this play falls short. The first half is enjoyable enough: an unusually well-written English drawing-room comedy with serious overtones. The play begins to fall apart with the bizarre sessions of pseudo-psychotherapy in Act 2, and degenerates into overt Christian flag-waving by the final scene.

I wanted to read this book since the first time it was published in 1997 but I think I was to young to have appreciated. Now that I finished it I just can say it was a real feast for the mind and soul, it was just the best meal I ever had. Isabel Allende writes after a terrible moment in her life which was the dead of ther daughter Paula but she does it with so much passion, such zeal for life as if celebrating it together with love and lovemaking, just couldn't help but devouring the book in 3 nights. Is not only a novel (if you can call it that way) but is also a cooking book with so many exquisite recipes that you would like to try with your partner (or on your partner) at once. If you happen to speak spanish native or have a good knowledge of this language I'd recommend you to buy the spanish version to enjoy Isabel Allende at her best.

Es inevitable, no arrepentirse de las cosas de las que se arrepiente la autora.
Las recetas están bastante bien introducidas en el texto, aunque lo veo un poco forzado, no hay una unidad, son historias aisladas que a veces no pegan demasiado bien con la receta en cuestión y te quedas un poco a medias, ( en la receta y en la historia), pero es ameno y original.
A mi entender éste y los demás libros de Isabel Allende, pecan un poco de "aburguesados" y ésto no me gusta demasiado, tniendo en cuenta que pretende escribir precisamente para un público no burgués.
Tampoco me gusta la excesiva diferencia entre las ediciones existentes. La calidad del papel y de las ilustraciones es abismal, no así los precios.Que también pecan de "burgueses".

I bought this book in the early 1990's, therefore, I'm almost sure that the copyright on this book (ie: 2007) is for the "reprint" of this original 1990's book.

Still, in the 1990's this book was ahead of it's time, so if you are interested in a nice picture book of beautiful country kitchens, this is a nice book for your library. In my opinion, this is not really a "how to" kitchen remodeling book, but rather, a book with wonderfully photographed ideas for your country-style kitchen. The ideas are classic and hold up well , even in 2007.

Fifth time I've purchased this cookbook. If I lend it to someone, they don't seem to be able to return it, so I purchase it again. This last purchase is actually a gift for someone, so I don't have to lend my copy out anymore. If you love chocolate this is a MUST HAVE cookbook. Never had a single recipe fail. It has won a James Beard Award. Need I say more?

I had Marcel Desaulniers updated Death by Chocolate book and was left feeling that something was missing. There was... Variety, ease. I am no master baker. Just a novice. I also collect books for dinner parties, but that book left me a little shaken. I felt it was for the way advanced, those who like to spend all day in the kitchen whipping up desserts. I do not. On the suggestion of one of the reviewers, I searched high and low for this book, and found it, here on amazon. I am not displeased at all. This book contaians very elegant desserts at what seems the fraction of the prep time from the other. And you can not ask for more variety from a chocolate master like Desaulniers. He give you drinks spiked with chocolate, and desserts for both white and dark chocolate. Scintallating.

This is an excellent book. I particularly like it as it has photos of every dessert so you can be inspired by the photos and at least you can see what the finished product looks like. The desserts are a little time consuming but you can probably tackle them over a couple of days. I have made a few of the desserts and I can only rave about them.
