Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - Watered down formula = recipe for malnutrition
I am a believer in Christ, his resurrection and his atonement for the sins of all. This book is aimed at babes and doubters but it takes Paul's milk versus meat admonition too far. This is watered down formula --a recipe for malnutrition. Get out your Bible and get on your knees and ignore evangelical inventions and interpolations. God lives!!

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Excellent
This book is excellent. It puts a lot of evidence into perspective about the case for Jesus. He is Risen!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Strong Influence on my faith
I have always been a believer of God but this book put a solid foundation under my feet. I originally read it in order to have an "answer" for my son's questions and was surprised to find that it had a great effect on re-igniting my passion for the Christ. I bought the CD's to pass along.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Love this book!
The evidence presented is compelling. Excellent book for those who just want the facts.

Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - Case for what?
History and science never provided proof that Christ even existed and I see people arguing here whether he resurrected!?

I do not think Jesus existed to begin with, we have lot's of proves of Pharaohs, Persians, many Mediterranean civilizations, Hindu kingdoms all of them thousands of years before Christ and still, absolutely no evidence of Christ's existence.

Please, just do not tell me Bible proves something, it's just a funny religious book as any other.

That being said, I am not some aggressive atheist, I just love the truth more than brainwashing & dogma.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Anne Frank
A wonderful book for young adults and adults......filled with information on how the people lived and made it thru this terrible time. Especially the young Anne Frank what courage she had.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Anne Frank: The diary of a young girl-The definitive edition
This is not your middle school edition. She really explores how it is becoming a teenager.I'm in awe of her writing skills.I would challenge today's teenagers to write so eloquent. A somber read knowing the outcome.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Why is this $13, not including tax, for only 36 pages?
I had that question. But mostly, I wrote this review to cure a superstition. There were 666 reviews so I had to leave something...

Your welcome. lol

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - The Whole Person
Of course, I read the first published, "Diary of Anne Frank" in high school. It made me feel like I wasn't all alone with my feelings. I first bought the Complete and Unabridged book for my husband's niece when she turned fourteen. She loved it and still owns it. I also read the book at that time and it filled in gaps that I didn't realize were missing until they were added back. I liked how she spoke of her sexual feelings because in a very real sense, sex is one of the most important components of continuing the human species. That there are those who feel squeamish about speaking about it is a testament to beliefs about keeping some things "private" when speaking about them will rid teenagers of myths they may believe. Anyway, I bought this copy for my friend's daughter who will be turning fifteen in September and I am hoping she will enjoy it as much as my husband's niece and I did. And all the millions of girls who have.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - You've seen the play--now read the amazing diary
I've been in love with Anne Frank since I was in Junior High and we read the play based on her diary. But the play is an amuse-bouche, the tantalizing bite that precedes a meal. In the Diary itself, Anne truly comes alive. Her words, the way she wrote them. When she was alive and hiding from the greatest horror man has ever known. And she never lost her courage, or her belief in the nobility of man. I cried and I laughed. But more than that, I felt a growing wonder and respect as I read her words and realized that during this period she was growing from a precocious child into an intelligent woman of depth and understanding.

Let no generation ever forget. Let no generation ever stop reading the story of the young girl in hiding. And let no generation lose their ultimate faith in the goodness of mankind, as she never lost hers. Thank you, Anne, for giving us a living document of a beautiful spirit.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Great
Overall great service. Arrived earlier than expected and in great condition. Even some helpful annotations.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Quick & efficient
I received my book quicker than I even expected. I'm a student who orders textbooks online to save money, and usually you have to sacrifice the first week of school work to wait for the shipping. This was not the case on this book. Was in great shape. I would definitely recommend using these guys.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - It's a good book for spanish class
The short stories are great and it explains the literary movements in Spanish literature. I highly recommend this book for school use or light reading. Just make sure you have a dictionary handy if you're not a native speaker.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - I typed in the ISBN number to search for the book, and they gave me the wrong edition
I typed in the ISBN number originally, in order to search for the book. I then clicked on used books, and then they sent me the wrong edition of the book!

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Good, thorough, and not too difficult overview of Spanish literature.
This is my textbook for a Spanish literature overview class, and so far we have just gone straight through it and not required any extra materials. It is very thorough and gives a good overview in the limited space it is able to have. My one criticism would be that the informational sections feel too long and boring and needlessly detailed when it gets into long lists of literary terms, etc. Overall a good book, though.

Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - Most boring book I have ever read
This review may annoy people who feel strongly about the book or the incident, but Hiroshima really is the driest read imaginable. I had to teach it to an extension English class and when the time came to discussing the text, all 24 students owned up to not reading it because it bored them senseless. I couldn't feel angry about that because I too found it so dull that I struggled to get through it. I ended up supplementing it with other non-fiction texts. Three successive classes have all proclaimed it the most "boring" book they have ever been asked to read for English. This review is more for teachers pondering using it as a study text. Don't! Your students will thank you for it.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - An intimate look at the innocent victims of total war
Hard not to feel nostalgic for days when war was waged by warriors. A certain civility in that. Rules of engagement. Codes of honor. You think of Greeks, and Samurai, and "The Charge of the Light Brigade;" of French and German soldiers who meet in No Man's Land to share Christmas treats then return to opposing trenches.

But then here comes Nanking, Stalingrad, London, Dresden, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki. Total war, as the phrase goes. A reversion to tribal days, perhaps, when warring foes fell men, women, and children alike, to void vengeance. A weapon now to instill dread, to sap the will, to raise the costs of conflict.

Hiroshima: August 6, 1945, 8:15 a.m. That's when John Hersey`s story begins, with "a noiseless flash." It begins not in the White House, nor in the Imperial Palace or the B-29 that dropped the bomb. But in the personnel department of the East Asia Tin Works, where Toshiko has just turned to speak to a co-worker. In the Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital, ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - The atomic bomb was not the prettiest part of the war
This novel is the best, accurate, and historical record of the people of Hiroshima after the atomic bomb hit in 1945. The entire town was left in ruins, and the people had to do all the could to make it out and survive. It was the most horrible moment for Japan, and thousands died, and even more were left sick or died for radiation poisoning. It also makes you wonder, is this worth the cost of victory? I give credit to this author for gathering these historically accurate summaries of a good variety of survivors of the bombing, as well as returning decades later to conclude his biographies of these brave survivors. The novel is not a pretty one, but shows how pushing one button can change the lives of thousands of people in a matter of seconds. Its sad seeing what these people went for, as well as sad how some of these survivors ended up dying. This is an emotional book, and shows a Japan's point of view after the bombing, which many Americans weren't aware of the full extent these people ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - A silent explosion (3.5 stars)
First published in 1946, this simple little book recounts the experiences of six civilian inhabitants of Hiroshima who survived the atomic blast on April 6, 1945. Few residents recall hearing any sound from the explosion, just the bright flash and the shock wave. Even those who died soon after most often did so in silence. The book tells what those 6 were doing that morning, what happened when the atomic bomb exploded, and how they coped in the hours, days, weeks and months that followed. The final chapter returns 40 years later to follow up on the rest of their lives.

I've heard rave and almost reverential recommendations of this book and wondered if my thoughts would be changed by reading it. The text is mostly straightforward and seemingly neutral in its judgment; it reports that most Hiroshimans did not blame the US for the bomb, they just wanted to get on with their lives as best they could. It is not until the very end that it seems to take on an agenda, and while ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Confusing and Boring
I read this book as a 10th grade student. The book may have been the most confusing book I have ever read. The book has 7 different accounts and each one is short and almost pointless. If Hershey only used 4 characters and went into each person's account deeper, it would have been much more interesting. Could not wait to finish this book... not for good reasons though.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Objective???
The author writes from religious bias... It would be nice to see a book on religions that is objective...

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Almost Perfect, Flawed by Moments of Religious Bigotry
First, this book is the most accessible, well-written and even-handed single-volume overview of current world religion (plus some historical context) I've ever found in English. I'd recommend this to anyone seeking to get at least a baseline grasp of what our neighbors believe. I will likely buy a copy for each of my nieces and nephews (with a few words of warning about the objectionable parts). At first the image-saturated, magazine-style format made me a little worried the information would be lightweight, but the appealing and accessible format is well-used to convey a genuinely well-chosen selection of information. Author John Bowker has perfect credentials, as the author of The Oxford Dictionary of World Religions and editor of the The Cambridge Illustrated History of Religions (Cambridge Illustrated Histories). The last section, which draws attention to the hopeful & empathetic common message seemingly at the heart of all major faiths, is particularly welcome.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - World Religions: The Great Faiths Explored & Explained
I was very impressed with the arrival of my book, this service provider was very quick and efficient, and the book was in good condition.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Good generalization
I purchased this for a nephew (14 yrs) for X-mas, per his request, but like most books, I had to read it before I wrapped it. The reviews on Amazon that I based my purchase on were correct. I wanted a general review of the world's religions but not a dissertation (like many of the books I looked at). The pictures of the relgious art were a beatuful compliment to the writing. The descriptions of the various religious practices were comprehensive but not overwhelmimg to the casual reader in most respects.

The description of Hindu religion was confusing, but this could be due to my total ignorance of this religion and its complexity and not the fault of the writer. My biggest complaint is the lack of information on Ancient (Greek, Egyptian, Roman, Babylonia, and et al) African, American Indian, Carribean, South American and other religious customs that are not considered "main-stream" religious traditions. These religious practices are an important part of religion development in ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - History or Prophesy
One clear advantage of reading a book such as this, so many years after publication, is that time has separated truth from theory. If I had read this thin volume ten years ago, I am sure I would have approached investing and the advice from the investment community with greater caution.

The similarities between the events described in this book and the recent crash is 2008 are astounding. I found myself rereading passages to check dates, names, and investment instruments. Some of the companies listed by Mr. Galbraith who were deeply involved in the most improper investment schemes of the twenties survived and evolved to perpetrate a new type of fraud on yet another generation.

Mr. Galbraith carefully lays out the building blocks that paved the way of financial destruction that exploded in 1929. The lack of government oversight, the "irrational exuberance," the willingness of the public to throw their money at hollow investments is documented with precision. This documentation ... Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - The Great crash of 1929
A Classic! Gives the best explanation of the the causes of the Great Depression and so of the Crash of 2008. Bubbles and crashes have the same causes, only the names change not the fundamentals. Very interesting the role of Goldman Sachs in both cases

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - This book should be required reading for all stock market investors
I read the 1999 version of this 1955 text and would recommend it to all readers with an interest in the Stock market. The writer jokes in his foreword about the sales spurt the book gets every few years as the same crises play out time and time again - the 1999 text predicts the tech bubble demise.

The book explores the follies of the roaring twenties stock market - and it will sound all too familiar to those familiar with the 2000 & 2008 market tops.

The book is a simple read - it is not overly technical, the writer has an easygoing style and the subject remains interesting throughout.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - A classic!
Written 50 years ago, never out of print, fill in the crisis du jour and you will see why!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Amazing strories of the power of prayer
This is a book we read last month at my church. What an amazing experience it was to lay hands on this book. I was amazed, not that I do not know that prayer changes things (since I have prayed for things in my life to change and they did change), but I was just amazed at a church body lead by an amazing man of God that could bring forth such testimonies. A church that moved from 20 to thousands, testimony of God saving lives, Testimonies of feeding the homeless (the actually life God wants us to leave), testimonies of transformation. You know there are certain things we have to pray through until the situation changes.... this book gives us examples of how the prayer meetings and crying out to God brings out great results. This is a book everyone should read... whether Christian or not..the kind of Christian attitude in this book will help save the world if we all had such an attitude. A MUST READ! Buy a copy for friends, co-workers and family! God bless you Jim Cymbala

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the best Christian books I have read!
This book is about the power of prayer, but it's underlying theme is God's role for the church today. This book ranks as one of my top favorites in Christian literature, excellent!!!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - The Essential Neruda
Being a fan of Pablo Neruda's poetry, I wanted to get my hands on The Essential Neruda to take a look at more of his work. After reading Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair, I fell in love with the poet.

The Essential Neruda contains 50 of Neruda's poems, not all of them about love.
I enjoyed this collection, a few of my favorites are in here, such as I Can Write the Saddest Lines, Leaning into the Afternoons and I Like For You To Be Still.
I did find the translation to be slightly different from the poems in Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair, due to the different translators. I love reading Neruda's work in Spanish, it is painfully beautiful.
There is definitely something lost in translation, the feel of the work is a bit different when read in English. The words flow better in it's original Spanish text. I'm a sucker for sad poetry about love and heartache.

Though Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair remains my favorite collection of Neruda's poetry, ... Leer Más

I highly recommend this edition! It's wonderful to go back and forth, line to line, reading the English translations first, then the original Spanish. Translations are fluid! A fantastic way to introduce yourself to one of the greatest poets of all time!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Splendid poetry!!

This book is an awesome work with splendid poems that have something to say to everyone.

Side-by-side texts with their translations are great in making the reader evaluate the meanings and nuances in both languages.

I love these verses:

"And the air came in with orange-blossom fingers
over all those asleep:
a thousand years of air, months, weeks of air,
of blue wind, of iron cordillera,
that were like soft hurricanes of footsteps
polishing the lonely boundary of the stone."

The imagery is vivid and thrilling, like in these verses:

"Full woman, carnal apple, hot moon,
thick smell of seaweed, crushed mud and light,
what obscure clarity opens between your columns?
What ancient night does man touch with his senses?"

I can recommend this poetry to anyone.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - A mixed review
the first and last chapters were philosophical reviews of life (comparing the exciting aspects of flying which makes life seem so vibrant) against the mundane life of bureaucrats and peasants who live and die without seeing the world (as he does from the air). A line in the closing chapter is poignant: the infant that he is sitting next to has the potential to be anything and everything; but due to its parents and its probable future life, it wont ever realize its potential (they killed Mozart).

the second to last chapter is a number of stories of the war in Spain (Franco; remember this was written about the late 1920s to the 1930s), with people fighting; it's a social commentary on war from the perspective of life and death (and has NOTHING to do with flying). This is a very long chapter (50 pages out of a 229 page book) and I was disappointed because I was'nt into reading about this.

all the other chapters were of flying (and crashing, such as surviving in the desert), were good, and ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Fabulous adventure
After reading this thrilling autobiographical account of the authors adventures it is easy to understand why this book has been rated by National Geographic as one of the top 10 adventure books of all time. The reader is treated to a series of dangerous adventures including airplane crashes, desert survival in Libya, flying a mail plane above and through the Andes and Pyrenees mountain ranges, visiting inhospitable regions of Chili and Argentina, and observing up close the Spanish Civil War.

All the way through the book the author gives us his thoughts about men and mankind and what drives some to risk their lives for their beliefs, and how that impacts all of us.

A great read. Highly recommended.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Living defines Man
Faced with the absurdity of life, French existentialists threw their hands up in the air and gave up. They failed utterly to place man within the universe. Saint-Exupery lived through the same depressing times as did Sartre and Camus feeling just as lost as they did but he never gave up on living. Man defines himself by the act of living.

One of the most famous passages describes how Henri Guillaumet made his way out of the Andes after a plane crash. Walking several days and nights through the snow, he refuses to stop because he knows his comrades and his wife believe that if he lives, he walks. He fell once and accepted he would die buried in the falling snow. He got up so he could wedge himself on a rock and that way his body would be found in the spring. That way his wife would be able to collect the insurance money without having to wait the statutory seven years after a mere disappearance. When Guillaumet reached the rock, he simply continued walking. "What I did , no animal would have done." said ... Leer Más

I absolutely felt lifted above the earth, into the French author's big world view of 1936, as he spoke of his adventures and thoughts about life from the vantage point of an early aviator. Please read this book!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Just Superb
A short review.
You can't walk away from this true adventure book without feeling great about mankind, its accomplishments and its future.
Every young man with a future ahead of him should read it (and any young woman who can stand a book without any female characters).
The prose is simply beautiful, and I never thought I would say that about any book. The translator deserves a prize.

A second shorter piece at the end talks about the authors experience in observing the 1930's Spanish Civil War, between the fascists and the nationalists / socialists.
Shorter, as emotional and more readable than Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls" - it deals with the same civil war. The fascists won.
