Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Ok For Learning To Tie From A Book
I have gotten about 3/4 of the way through this book since my purchase. The first few knots you learn are very easy but once you get further in and the knots become more complicated, the description on what to do seems to get more confusing and less clear. I have had to turn to friends for help with a few but all in all this book is OK.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Booklist review is completely wrong
I bought this book thinking it was exactly what I needed after reading the Booklist review on the page. This book is not aimed at sportsmen like the review implies, it is aimed at artists. I assumed I could look up knots by task, which was not the case; the knots are presented by type, which helps, but until you read the description of the knot, you won't know what to use it for and you still won't know whether it is the best knot for the task. "Need a secure loop tied in the middle of a rope during your next camping trip?" I will know what knot to use because of the review, but not this book. Further, the book spends a good deal of time on decorative knots, while not including (as other readers pointed out too) basic knots you actually use for the sports it recommends knots for. I would rate this book lower, but its not the book's fault the Booklist review seems to refer to a completely different book (knot just a non-updated edition) and the book does in fact have beautiful illustrations ... This is my second book from Des and he provides great information and tips. Great anybody that is interested in knots.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - A survey of knot books
Just as there is no perfect knot, there is no perfect knot book. All have deficiencies of one sort or another. One common deficiency seems to be misleading or just plain wrong directions for tying a knot. Another deficiency is a failure to tell the reader when to use a particular, or more important, when not to use it. All the books suffer these deficiencies to one degree or another.

Another deficiency is too many knots! But how could this be a deficiency, one might ask. Isn't more better? The answer is that the beginner needs to know the most useful knots that have the widest application. If the book contains knots that don't have wide application but doesn't tell the reader which ones are widely used and which ones aren't, how is the reader to know which ones to learn? Therefore, for a beginner, careful selection by the author is essential.

Budworth, The Complete Book of Knots

Of all the books, this is my pick as the best for a beginner. ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Portable Knotting Book
This is an excellent book. It's small 100ish knots and pocket size make it extremely portable. This is in contrast to another great knotting tome such as, Clifford Ashley's "Ashley Book of Knots" which is the definitive work on the subject. Which is large and heavy and very expensive. This book is a great value being in full color and it's jam packed with info for each knot. I particularly like the section on whippings that includes sewing palms. I've been a teacher of knots to scouts know for over twenty years and this is what I'd recommend to a young tenderfoot or second class scout if he was interested in learning more than the 10 required knots for 1st class rank.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Housism
The Misanthrope is one of the best Moliere's plays but also one of the hardest to play.
Why ? The problem, actually, is if that sounds like a drama it's a comedy.
One (it might be Gide) used to say that "If the Misanthrope is a comedy, and if it is about virtue, then we have to laugh at virtue" - but it isn't.
Reading the play again two weeks ago, I was amazed to see that the two main characters, Alceste and Philinte, really looked like House and Wilson (yes, those from the show !).
What is funny, both in the show and in the play, is neither the insults nor the "idealism" of both lead characters (that tendancy to think that "truth is everything") but this little embarrassment to see your best friend in trouble because he doesn't know how to move into our socialized world, and seems to have not the right code nor the good manneers ("Please, for Christ's sake !... That's not so important ! Keep cool ! Why don't you try to be just nice and polite, even if you don't really ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Good Introduction to Moliere - A Comedy of Manners, A Light-Hearted Satire
The Misanthrope (1666) is a short play, one that can be read in a single sitting. Moliere's humorous style has weathered the centuries quite well, and footnotes are not needed.

The protagonist is the misguided misanthrope, Alceste. His distaste for mankind does have one exception. He is enamored with the attractive, vivacious Celimene, but seemingly so is everyone else including Alceste's chief rival, Oronte, the two marquises, Acaste and Clitandre, and unnamed others in the background.

The first scene introduces Philinte, an avowed friend of Alceste, that is unsuccessfully trying to moderate Alceste's adamant refusal to adhere to any social convention, custom, or civility which involves any form of dissimulation or flattery. Philinte argues that Alceste should torment himself a little less about the vices of his period and be more lenient of human nature and foibles. Good sense avoids all extremes. And Philinte questions whether Alceste is perhaps inconsistent in ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - No comedy without truth and no truth without comedy
Moliere said that ' there is no comedy without truth, and no truth without comedy'. And his plays are a scathing and humorous depiction of a simplified, and stylized human nature. Whether it is religious hypocrisy in ' Tartuffe' , miserliness in 'The Miser' or misanthropy in ' The Misantrhope' Moliere often focuses on one quality in order to satirize and society and mankind in general. In the Misanthrope the main character Alceste tells the truth to everyone ( except himself) and in so doing alienates everyone. This is against the advice of his best friend Philinte. At the same time he is in love with the frivolous Celimene who he attempts to change by constantly criticizing. He begs that she retire with him away from the corruption of society but she prefers society to him. The play ends with Philinte and his fiancee trying to persuade Alceste to remain.
Moliere writes in a clear, simple direct language and the surface sense of his work is readily understood. His view of human nature is ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - "The Misanthrope" Review: An Annoying Play!
"The Misanthrope" - this is the only play I read. This play is superficial and degrades, as always, women. The woman in this play is stereotyped as a flirtatious girl with many suitors. I did not find this play at all a farce and found the rhyming childish and annoying. The play ends without a true ending and will leave you wanting the time you spent reading it back. I do not recommend.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Escher Prints Explained by Author
Great M.C. Escher prints to contemplate. The presentation gives you a little sense of historical perspective. Loved reading the captions where the artist offered some description/explanation. Even a few puzzles in his explanations, like his art. Example: one alludes to a mistake in a skyscraper scene that was corrected later in his career, but without clarification (makes you think, which I love).

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Awesome book!
M.C. Escher is an amazing artist and his work speaks for itself! If you're contemplating in even the slightest way to buy this book, I recommend doing it!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Optically wonderful
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1U8BNLDHJBS3G M.C. Escher needs no introduction. Or if you prefer, you can read him up on wikipedia or visit his official website. He's the guy responsible for creating amazing illustrations using optical illusions.

This small book is a neat package containing his well known works as well as the less public ones. There's an introduction by M.C. Escher himself. All the illustration are captioned to explain the ideas behind.

(More pictures are available on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Perfect!After viewing
After viewing a display of Esher's art we wanted more information about him and his work. This book was perfect! It included so much of his work and his own thoughts about the creations. It is a good quality paperback book at a great price!

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - The unusual world of M.C Escher
Many words come to mind when attempting to describe the work of Dutch artist M.C Escher: surreal, haunting, mysterious, dream-like.
Escher is best known for his exploration of the boundaries between art and reality ("Drawing Hands", "Reptiles", "Print Gallery"), and for his distortion of everday objects and mathematical experimentation with geometric shapes, patterns and perspectives (too many of his paintings to number). His best and most characteristic works, including "Depth" (1955), "Stars" (1948), and (naturally), "Other World" (1946) are highly imaginative, creating a fantastic and indescribable dream-universe all their own, one which must ultimately be experienced in order to be fully appreciated.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - una reflexión lúcida

Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - No tiene sentido

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Book!
Si eres una mujer que no esta conforme con su vida y ve que todos a su alrededor tiene todo bien formado... te encantara este libro. Te pierdes en cada historia desenlazada.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Autentico y divertido
Una mujer como tu presenta con cariño y humor cuatro protagonistas que enfrentan los retos de hoy. Un libro muy divertido de leer.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Very Educational
I found this book to be very educational with it's picture from around the world. There is a lot of diversity and the pictures are well taken. Many pictures staged which isn't always my favorite, but it was still an interesting book.

Sent this to my sister for Christmas/birthday gift. The photos are beautifully formatted and have an interesting layout. Certainly not from an American perspective of horse photographs and a wonderful edition!

I bought this book for my 12 year old granddaughter who loves horses and rides. This book was beautifully done the photos were magnificent and she loves it and has taken time really appreciating the talent of the photographer it will be a treasure for her for many years

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Unbelievable beautiful book
My husband found this on a clearance table for $16.00. He asked if I wanted to pick up a picture book of horses. I said no because I thought he was talking about pictures of horses in sunny meadows, stuff you'd find on calenders. When I saw the book I instantly said yes. Yes the pictures are staged, as some have complained and they are dark as others have complained but the photography is brilliant, the lighting intriguing see pages 60, 163, on 175 look at how the red pops from the page and I love the staging and the narrative. If you want to go beyond calendar art and be challenged to see in a different way this book is for you.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Good book bad formated size
A friend of mine had this book and when I saw it I knew I had to have one. What I liked best was the size, a fairly decent coffee table size book. When I received my copy I was really disappointed because it had been shrunk down to what looked like some kids book. It lost all of its richness and appeal. Even though it says there are more pictures than the larger book every pic looked dwarfed and out of balance. I gave it as a gift to a horse lover friend but would not buy this size again. I almost sent it back, but too much trouble. If it was in the original size I first saw it in I would have rated it a 5 for sure.

Amazon claimed they were sending a new book but it arrived with a peeled spine. They claimed that it would be replaced but nothing arrived. This
is the first time I have experienced poor service and not from a vendor,
but rather, Amazon itself!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Art, architecture, and more.
This is a nice little coffee table styled book on architecture and artwork, showcasing about 92 architects and a few of their works. Its small size makes it easy to take along with you wherever you go.

Each architect gets two pages devoted to them, comprising a brief biography highlighting some of their notable works, as well as photos and/or sketches showcasing one or two of their works.

Some of the architects and works featured include Alberto Campo Baeza (Center for innovative technologies in Majorca), Will Bruder (Byrne residence in Arizona), Frank Gehry (Experience Music Project in Seattle), Arata Isokazi (Shizuoka convention and arts center in Shizuoka), Polshek Partnership (the very space age Rose center for earth & science in New York), and Richard Rogers (Law courts in Bordeaux, and Millennium Dome in London).

A good book.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - 5 stars for supplementary content, 1 star for binding quality
My comments are not about the play "Le Tartuffe" itself, but about this edition of the book. I teach French literature and often choose Petits Classiques Larousse editions because they contain excellent supplementary resources to facilitate comprehension, analysis and discussion. Each text includes an author biography, background information situating the work in its historical and social context, discussion questions after each act/section/chapter, and an analysis of major themes of the work. These editions are also reasonably priced...but poorly bound. After one reading the pages begin to fall out.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Moliere takes aim at the hypocrisy of neoclassical France
I often taught Moliere's "Tartuffe" as an example of the neoclassical form of comedy in contrast to the romantic comedy represented by Shakespeare. We would read "Twelfth Night," a play set in a faraway exotic land where the point was simply romance, and then turn to "Tartuffe," where the contemporary society becomes one of the primary concerns of the comic dramatist. During the neoclassical period society was concerned with norms of behavior, and in a Moliere play you usually find a eccentric individual, out of step with the rest of society, who is laughed back to the right position. Moliere was concerned with social problems, which was while this particular play, dealing with the issue of hypocrisy, was banned for years. Keep in mind that originally hypocrisy was specific to religion, although today it can be used with regards to politics, sex, or even uncontroversial subjects. Consequently, the idea of characterizing Tartuffe as an imposter, would miss the point; he might be misrepresenting himself, ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Loos-One of the Fathers of Architectural Modernism
By no means is Adolf Loos as well known as his younger contemporaries, Le Corbusier, Gropius or Van de Rohe. Very few of his buildings rise to the level of iconic. Nevertheless, Loos through his buildings and writings was one of the founders of architectural Modernism.

At the turn of the Twentieth Century, he was the principle advocate for removing adornments from building fascades. He was also one of the first architects to design homes with flat roofs and descending terraces. Loos also broke away from symetrical floor plans. He made the building shell conform to his use of shape and volume. These are all innovations that helped reshape architecture during the Twentieth Century.

The German Publishing Company Taschen is producing a whole series of brief high quality monographs on the most important architects of the Twentieth Century. Priced at under ten dollars a volume, you will not be able to find a better introduction to Adolf Loos' work. Although many of his buildings ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Decent Loos reference and .... bonus!
This little monograph is a nice little introduction / reference on Loos's work -- brief, an inane and badly translated introduction, good for pulling off a shelf when you need to refresh your memory about a certain Loos project. Just what we expect from these Taschen books.

But what makes it really special is a series of photographs of the recently restored Villa Muller in Prague (project built c.1930). These are credited to Pavel Stecha, according to the list in the back. They are simply phenomenal. They give a vivid, spatial sense of the house and are worth the price of the book by far. Very dramatic.
