por: Ben Sherwood Julio 20, 2010 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Inconspicuously ComfortingAfter seeing the movie "Charlie St. Cloud" I wondered if the book might be better (as most books are better than their movie adaptations) but I was also skeptical of the book for the movie was very Nicholas Sparks-ish - which I'm not a fan of - and so I figured the book would be simliar. However, I gave The Life and Death of Charlie St. Cloud a whirl and I was more than pleasantly suprised. I am a young adult struggling with ideas of spirituality and death etc. and these issues give me anxiety from time to time. To someone like me, the story of Tess, Charlie, and Sam just flat out made me feel good about it all. The world Mr. Sherwood writes is inconspicuously comforting in that you're not overwhelmed by schmaltzy sappy prose but It's beautifully written in a neat, easy to read way which allows the story and characters to almost sneak up on - not overpower you with melodrama. Before you can even realize it you're invested in the characters and story as if you ... I absolutely recommend it. Evaluación: - BELIEVEIt is so very difficult to review a book with such a subject as this one. It truly is a masterpiece, but it seems so simple in its'subject. A subject that has been reviewed, talked about, preached on, terrified us, made us understand, and made us both happy, sad and of course, confused. Where do we go when we die? Forget all that you have heard or read or that Mom and Dad told you about, because, this tiny little novel just may have the real answer. If Ben Sherwood is correct in his story, we are not really living life, as alive human beings, the living starts after we die. Can't claim that I cried or was amazingly moved by this novel, but it WILL stick with me for a long, long time, as we all wonder what it might be like on the other side. And if it is not what Charlie and Sam found it to be, maybe a bit different or maybe nothingness, it won't make a world of difference because we will have ceased to live among our friends and loved ones. Truly a good read. 2.

Evaluación: - Huge Differences Between Books and Bones TV ShowI finished watching all 5 seasons of the BONES tv series and then turned to the books while waiting for season six to start next month. These two entities, the books vs. the tv series, are barely identifiable as being the same material. The number one thing that is the same is that Temperance Brennan is a forensic anthropoligist who can tell a great deal about how a person died from studying their bones. There is a great deal more factual material on forensic anthropology in the books than in the tv series. However, Temperance Brennan is a woman in her 40s who is currently working in Montreal while separated from her longtime first husband Pete. They have a grown college age daughter. Temperance is a recovering alcoholic who comes from a family of alcoholics. I have to say, I purchased this book because we enjoy the stories and characters on the TV show "Bones". The character of Temperance in the book doesn't seem to bear any resemblence to the one from the TV series. OK,that would have been fine except for my problem with the bad writing. I am weary from all the trite similies and uninteresting characters. I read another reader's opinion that Patricia Cornwall should "move over". To my mind, other forensic thriller authors shouldn't feel threatened by Kathy Reichs...not one little bit. It amazes me to see how many 4 & 5 star reviews there are. Just a humble opinion from an avid reader. Pat P from NJ Evaluación: - Twice As Long As It Needs To BeIt would be one thing if this procedural thriller was long because of all of the interesting forensic detail, but instead it is long because of tedious passages not only telling me every street the protagonist travels on going from here to there (every time she drives or walks), but the history of the neighborhoods, and so on. We get details of the protagonist's dreams we don't care about and we get detailed descriptions of the heritage of even the most minor characters, yet none of the supporting characters have any real depth of personality at all. Worse yet, the coincidence factor for the crime is high and the forensic heroine insists on doing silly things like going alone to dangerous places when she knows she is being stalked, then doing it again, then not doing anything repeatedly about the parking garage door which is ajar, then going someplace dangerous alone yet again. I enjoy the show, Bones, but I will never read another Kathy Reichs book again. This book was slow-paced and tedious, ... Evaluación: - Ultimately, just so, soI've read only a few of the Alex Cross novels, in no particular order, and while "Mary, Mary" contains an intriguing enough story and a clever twist or two, it lacks the consistent energy that fueled other entries in the series. In "Mary, Mary," Alex Cross heads to LA to investigate the murders of A-list Hollywood actresses. Ultimately, the story's criminal action moves rather briskly, but it's the time spent on Cross' personal life, particularly with his family, that slows the novel down. In the prior Cross novel's I've read, Patterson's inclusion of Cross' family provided a good counter to the murder mayhem Cross is surrounded in. However, the family scenes here mostly don't amount to more than Cross expressing his regret for the time his job forces him away from his kids. Patterson has explored this in the novel's I've read, and while it's a worthy facet to the Cross character, it becomes mundane and repetitive in "Mary, Mary." Patterson needs to present Cross' personal conflicts from a new angle if ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Not his bestFirst of all - I LOVE James Patterson. I love the pace of his novels - the twists and turns - and the fact that his writing style clear and direct. But, I did not LOVE this one. It seemed disjointed and convuluted - like he was juggling too many balls at one time. The surprise ending was good - but by that time, I felt like I had worked a little too hard to follow the story. Evaluación: - easy read; surprise endingThis is an average James Patterson book -- better than some, not as good as others. I read it on a 4 1/2 hour flight and it was an easy read. If you like detailed clues so you can figure out who done it as you read through the book, this one will leave you frustrated. por: Scott Turow 1992-11 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Turgid proseI left this book on the seat of the plane after reading four chapters. Boring and barely literate, this book is a waste of time for all but hardcore thriller completists. Evaluación: - What Reviewers MissedI have just read most of the 103 reviews of Presumed Innocent. Although I agree with many of the sterling reviews, just saying it`s a great book doesn`t help the potential reader. Critiques of lack of character development are strange as this is first person narrative. We can only view the other characters through the narrator`s prism. It is to Turow`s credit that the characters come alive as seen solely through the eyes of one person. Speaking of characters, there was little mention of the most interesting one of all, Sandy Stern! Rusty Sabich is highly flawed, so we don`t have a real hero to care about. Stern comes closest, and his is a wonderfully developed character. I always perked up when he was on the page. The book is too long, and Rusty is ultimately disappointing morally, but Turow`s prose is superb, and the style is refreshing. Evaluación: - The book that made Turow a star, and deservedly so!Scott Turow's first book PRESUMED INNOCENT is still a must read after all these years. I just read INNOCENT and while it referred to the events in PRESUMED INNOCENT and the murder of Carolyn Polhemus, it never reveals the results of the trial in which Rusty Sabich was charged with her murder. Presumed Innocent is definitely a classic, and a must read. I'm sure many people will check it out after reading the sequel, INNOCENT. The entire novel is from Rusty Sabich's point of view. He's in charge of the investigation into Carolyn's death, but the upcoming election of his boss, Raymond Horgan kind fo slows things down. Horgan loses, and suddenly Rusty is charged with Carolyn's murder. Turns out Rusty may have been hiding things in the investigation that tied him to Carolyn. Nico Della Gardia and Tommy Molto run the case against Rusty. From reading INNOCENT, I knew Molto to be a decent guy, so it is fun to read about his origins. This huge blockbuster of a novel, now 23-years old, stands the test of time. Scott Turow has just written a sequel, "Innocent," which has received rave reviews. I will read it, but I won't wait 23 years to do so. Evaluación: - Presumed Innocent: a good readA great read for mystery/who-done-it readers with a twist ending that leaves your head spinning. por: Robert B. Parker 2000-11 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Not up to parI've read about fifteen Spenser novels, enjoyed the series thoroughly, and this is the first one I've found disappointing. The story line is more unbelievable than the rest of the series, and Spenser is out of character when he murders a pimp just to get some working capital and hires on as an assassin to get out of trouble with the feds. Worst of all is the endlessly repetitive descriptions of his angst over Susan's affair (and a lot of similar angst from Susan), which read like something Woody Allen would have churned out. Other reviewers have praised this as showing his sensitive side, but to me it was mostly tiresome psychobabble. On the plus side, his smart mouth is still present, and the jailbreak sequence was right up to snuff. If you're reading the Spenser novels in chronological order you need this as a bridge to later (and better) ones, but otherwise it's expendable. Evaluación: - a young and troubled SpencerHaving read most of the more recent Spencer novels, this was not as much fun to read as Spencer tries to reconcile his relationship with his better half. Most of the book is classic Spencer and I enjoyed it a great deal. Evaluación: - Catskill Eagle enlightening.I got hooked on Parker with his Jesse Stone series and then read a couple of the latest Spencer books. I am now going back and reading them from first to latest. In later books there were references to Susan in SF but nothing really clear about the other man. I find that after finishing this book, I have a whole different prospective of Susan than I had from just reading the latest books. I think in the later books, without knowing her history, she came off as the perfect, level headed, educated, above it all, kind of woman. With this book you see a home wrecker, who didn't seem to have a conscience about it, a self centered person that wants both men and just kind of a weak personality. Really surprised me. Through out the book, I said to myself many times: "Walk away, Spencer. If she doesn't know what she wants, let her hang." Hawk and Spenser still make me laugh out loud with their banter, but I was more relieved to get through this book than anything else. Evaluación: - A Catskill Eagle, a Spenser NovelSpenser is looking for Susan, has to break Hawk out of jail and become an assassin for the Government to find her. This is Parker at his best! Evaluación: - True DreckParker's novels are usually good escapist fare, but this is worse than awful. It should have been titled "Susan Silverman Airhead" rather than its current title. The basic story is that Spencer and Hawk must kill numerous people in order to free Susan Silverman from her new lover. Only at the end do we find that Susan was never really a captive and she believed that her lover would never have stopped her from leaving. Rather than being held captive she was in an extended holiday with her lover. It turns out her crisis was that she was simply conflicted about her love for both Spencer and her new lover-both being "excessively" in love with her. This of course causes her stress and threatens her "fierce independence." She remains emotionally conflicted even after her "rescue." Susan has always been portrayed as a smart (PH.D from Harvard in Psychiatry), mature, and most of all independent woman. She displays her independence in this story and those leading up to it by: ... A catchy story in Palahniuk's writing style, and unlike Survivor, the ending is not disappointing. Now I can't help but imagine the scenes of the book when I am flying... if you have read the book, you know what I mean! Evaluación: - ChokeFirst off, I have to say that this is the first book of Mr. Palahniuk's that I have read. I. Loved. It. Victor Mancini is a med school drop-out, forced to pay for his mother's nursing home care. He works as a colonial theme park, but this doesn't cover everything. How does he make his money? He fakes choking. Then he tells these people that save him how he has to have this surgery done, or wisdom teeth pulled, etc, and can't pay for it. These people then send him money and support him. He does this at several restaurants in the area and makes enough money. Along the way, you read flashbacks from his childhood and find out what kind of mother he really grew up with. You hear about his sexual addiction. You realize he is falling for a girl... one that isn't who she says she is. And you meet his best friend, fellow sex addict and co-worker, and his own personal addiction. With rocks. I really enjoyed this book, and can't wait to read more from him! Evaluación: - An organizer of ideasChuck is a great organizer of ideas we all hear throughout life. From tidbits of trivia about the secretive way we talk of terrorists and death to the ways in which art may have started in ancient Greece. The entertaining style of writing keeps even the most mundane scenes interesting and it all ties up to a terribly thrilling ending to tie each idea up with one another. So many ideas written throughout the book express themselves in the actions of each character to form a sort of icon for each idea, emblemized as a disturbed person we'd normally never give a passing glance. With Chuck's books the average workers of each industry represent the true nature of all humans in Greek Myth sort of way. Evaluación: - upCHUCKingly originalchuckie p took the torch from vonnegut and continues to carry it well aloft here. i'm a fight club man, but this one's great. if you're a CP reader, you'll certainly like it. it's right in that pocket of what you'd expect: the unexpected, the absurdity, the chorus-like refrains, the controlled philosophical rants, the erudition, the existentialism, the ennui, the plot that loops back on itself in order the propell it forward, the dark and the light, the nilihism and the romance, the vaudvillean, classic humor along with the too-clever-by-half humor, the agony and the ecstacy. like all CP i've read so far: no matter what you may think about the story, the characters, the absurdity, it doesn't matter: you simply cannot put it down. it's compelling fiction, and--disect it and deconstruct it and criticize it all the live long day--that's all that matters folks. Evaluación: - Among Palahniuk's Finest HoursThis novel is really an example of just about everything that I love about Chuck Palahniuk. The plot is strange and different, the storytelling and narrative are unique, and the story is just plain strange. There was a lot that I liked about his novel. I thought that a protagonist Victor was a very interesting character. From his con man acts (which are described excellently and his narrative on the reactions of his "Good Samaritan" seems spot on and believable). Even his justification that he does it as much for them as he does it for himself is an interesting viewpoint. A major focal point of the story, surrounded around sexual addiction and problems, also creates some memorable scenes and really shapes the major players in the story. The real meat of the story surrounds scenes at the hospital where Victor must take care of his sick mother. Some of his interactions with is mother do allow the reader to sympathize with Victor, which is interesting given his actions in the rest of the novel. Some ... Leer Más 9.

I give it 3.5 stars. Evaluación: - We deserve good fairy talesAdults deserve good fairy tales, too ~Neil Gaiman. I have trouble being honest and critical with a well written book. Someone like Gaiman, in all his work so far, is able to create a world and characters that just pull you in and don't let you go. He is able to create the myths that make me suspend disbelief and the critical and writerly mind and just let go. He does it here in _Stardust_. I have nothing to add in terms of the conflict or the characters because I lived and interacted with them. Books like this remind me why I loved reading so much when I was younger, before I sucked all the fun out by going to graduate school. Parker's Spenser series. However, I'm not writing here to review the book; that has already been done well enough by others. I'm writing to point out that there is an error in the matching of the reviews with the book supposedly being reviewed. Of the reviews posted for "Ceremony" (sixteen as I write this), three are reviewing a completely different work, apparently a supernaturally-themed B-movie on VHS, which happens to have the same title. These three are also three of the four reviews that give a score of less than four stars. This skews the "average review" score, while wasting the time of anyone looking for info about the Parker book. (The fourth reviewer who gives " Ceremony" a low score apparently does have the right work, if a misguided opinion. Evaluación: - CEREMONY by Robert B. ParkerI am a serious reader of historical books, but when I want something entertaining I turn to Robert Parker's books. Ceremony is a great read of the once employed city detective Spencer. Because of Spencer's lack of respect for the rules and regulations binding all other law officers, he is now in business for himself as a private eye. He is not discriminating as to who he works for either. This is the first book in a series about a young April Kyle who's family life and environment leads her into the seedy world of prostitution, crime, and corruption. For some reason Spencer is the shining Knight who comes to the rescue; but in a way the average reader cannot anticipate. Smart, confident, and with a cutting edge wit; Spencer is a great read! Evaluación: - A book which is sure to spark conversationI have just completed another Robert B. Parker book: "Ceremony." While I enjoy Mr. Parker's storytelling, the ending, which I do not wish to give away, disturbed me. Despite my opinion on the ending, I still give it 4 stars. Mr. Parker, as the author, is an excellent storyteller, and the one who creates the ending for his book: here, Spenser must come up with a quick solution to save a young girl from the jaws of a low-line prostitution ring - a girl who does not want to go back to the safety of her childhood home. I have thought about Spenser's solution in this story for some time now, and I honestly cannot say that I have an alternative, based on the character Mr. Parker created. I would recommend this book, but I am not sure everyone would agree with the ending. If you are looking for an ending which may spark conversation, this book has done so for me. J.R. Reardon author, "Confidential Communications" Evaluación: - A Love/Hate Relationship, Without the LoveNo one loves low budget horror flix more than I do, or is more likely to cut then ample amounts of slack than I am, but there are certain movies that have just rubbed me the wrong way and unfortunately for everyone connected with CEREMONY, this film is one of them. I'm not going to complain about horrendous hair-dos or out-dated wardrobes from days of yore, the film was made in 1994 so nothing is quite so antiquated that it would raise cries of "Yuck!" from even the most coiffure and sartorially conscious critic. The camera work and the lighting are no worse than a thousand other films I've endured--a bit of squinting here and there gets you through the dimmest scenes just fine. Several of the actors DO appear to be graduates of the Snidely Whiplash Academy of the Dramatic Arts, and they use their mentor's patented lip curl to convey nearly every emotion from disgust to anger to fear.
