Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - eat, pray, love
This autobiographical tale of the writer, who is in my opinion an emotionally unstable woman, at age thirty-five spends a year in three different countries, following a very bad break up and divorce from a marriage. She goes to Italy, a country rich in art, history, music, architecture and incredible scenery, and spends her time ignoring all of this to gorge herself on rich Italian food. Then she travels to India to spend time in an Ashram to contemplate and find God. Finally she flies to Bali, in Indonesia, to study with a medicine man. In this place she meets a man with whom she falls in love.
In this present world there are many love affairs which go sour, many marriages that fall apart, many couples who separate, and many who seek solace and peace with God. However, most people do not have the luxury of traveling to other lands or exotic places to "find" themselves. I felt the author was just taking an ego trip but because she has a reputation as a writer, was able to have her ...

Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - Sloppy e-book (The Right Stuff)
Shame on the publisher (Picador/Farrar, Straus and Giroux) for the sloppy production of this ebook. The Right Stuff To care so little about the quality of their product is an insult to both the author and his readers. Don't buy the ebook version until the publisher makes it right.
The original book, as written by Tom Wolfe, deserves 5 stars. It's highly entertaining as well as informative. In this review, I'm only rating the quality of the ebook which has at least five dozen scanning errors, some of which are confusing and make it impossible to figure out what the author intended. Until the publisher fixes it, spend your money on something else. There's plenty of quality ebooks available.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - HOW THE FUTURE BEGAN...
Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff" is a fascinating, in-depth and personal account of the test pilots who pushed the envelope between 1947 and 1963. From Chuck Yeager's historic flight in the Bell X-1, through the seven missions of Project Mercury, and concluding with Yeager's near-catastrophic flight in the NF-104, the book is an enthralling look at the early days of NASA, and of the men and women who made it happen! Of particular interest are passages that didn't make it into the terrific film adaptation, including the failed attempt of astronauts such as Jim Lovell and Pete Conrad to be among the seven; NASA's "shunning" of Scott Carpenter after what they viewed as a near-disastrous flight of Aurora 7, and how Wally Schirra's flight of Sigma 7 was seen as proof of Carpenter's messy handling of the fuel, and; the near-success of test pilots outside of NASA to successfully put a man in space before the first Mercury flights. A thrilling book for readers of history and of good storytelling, I ... Leer Más

I have read The Right Stuff three times (a previous copy). I made the mistake of loaning the book to somebody but I don't recall who. I consider it such a "must have" book in my library that I have replaced it.

Evaluación: 2 out of 5 stars - Great book, KINDLE version FULL OF ERRORS
Great book, completely flubbed by Amazon. Is it so hard to run a spell check on a Kindle manuscript before publishing it? This book is filled with ridiculous OCR screwups: letters cl being turned into a nonsensical d, for instance. And there are a lot of them. Amazon needs to fix this book and send us all an updated version that doesn't hurt our eyes or our brains.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the most entertaining nonfiction books I've read
Wolfe really keeps you on the edge of your seat, and despite being accused of taking liberties with the literal truth still creates a book that will teach you a great deal about the history of the early days of the American space program. This is one of the only nonfiction books I've read that reads like a well written novel. I will be diving further into the Wolfe cannon because this book was so good.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Greek Travel
Fantastic pictures and good maps, but directed toward the high end traveler. There is little or nothing for the budget traveler. Also the information of getting place to place is sketchy at best.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Not only informative but a beautiful book.
I picked this out of the Amazon lineup, before a short trip to Rhodes, and it is perfect. The illustrations are great - a joy to look at and yet they keep you pointed in the direction of what you might care to see. I envy the authors who obviously got to poke around in the islands and will look for others in the series.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Completely satisfied
The book came quickly in the mail. Just loved the book, it has lots of wonderful pictures. It's very informative, has good tips for hotels and hostels. It breaks down the islands so it makes it easier to figure out how to get from one island to another within the same group. Being a vegetarian, I also enjoyed how they talk about the food it will make it easier for me to eat out.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Great info in this book for travelers to Greece.
I love this book with photos and lots of info about each Greek Islands. Info on eating, shopping, hotels, etc.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Informative travel guide
I just got back from Italy and the Greek Islands and I used this book and other Eyewitness books to learn about each one I visited. The Eyewitness series has a lot of great information about the history of the area and points of interest including lots of gorgeous photos. However, I wish the Eyewitness series would include more "survival" type information such as transportation, restaurants, etc. so that they could be the only guide I need to take. I felt like I needed another guide for that type of information and I did not want to carry more books!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Pretty good single volume of Mexico highlights
I have been traveling to Mexico since studying Spanish in Cuernavaca in the mid-1980's. I just purchased this volume to have a more current guide for a trip I am making to Mexico and Guatemala this summer. I was particularly looking at Oaxaca, Cuernavaca, Palenque, and San Cristobal de las Casas. Things I really like about this guide:

1. Pretty good city maps which show bus stations, dining, lodging, banks and places of interest. Unfortunately, at my age I now find it easier to read maps with some type of magnifier, but they are helpful.

2. Not bad recommendations of things to see and do and helpful information about how to get to nearby places of interest.

3. Small tables of bus destinations from major cities giving approximate cost, travel time and some idea of the number of daily departures.

4. Occasional data on such things a local bus rutas for getting around a city -- particularly liked the ruta for getting to the Casino ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - As always Lonely Planet managed to put together a terrific guide for the concious traveller!
I have not used it for travelling to México yet but the trip planning has been smooth and rewarding. From reading it after a short 5 days visit to Mexico City I would recommend to follow closely this Lonely Planet guide on Mexico to explore the vast universe of the vibrant megalopolis.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - A Good Buy -- But Know What You're Buying
The Lonely Planet books are famous -- and rightly so. This book has great maps and a lot of useful information. It also has some information about transporation schedules -- something that's often hard to pin down even when you're fluent in Spanish, as I am. The cultural information it contains is great and I enjoyed reading it.

Really serious explorers however, can never go wrong with Carl Franz's book: The People's Guide to Mexico (Peoples Guide to Mexico)

If you are a more conventional tourist, one who seeks a few of the comforts of home, you'll want a phrasebook that is not designed for the backpacking crowd. You might want a phrasebook with a more intuitive pronunciation guide, something you can read as though it were meant to be read in English, yet comes and is understood by Spanish speakers!

Sincerely,

Eric W. Vogt, Ph.D.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - It's a Thick One
I bought this book to read up on whats new in Mexico... i think its a great book. You would be pretty lucky to find a travel book that covers "everything" you like to do and see while traveling. I found most of it to be pretty comical as if Bourdain had a hand in this book. This is one of the better travel books i own. Has everything in it so you can make some pretty good decisions about where your gonna stay, play, and eat. All the great stuff you expect from Lonely Planet in it. A+

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Great!
My college son got this book before he went to Mexico for 5 months to study. He was very pleased with it. He said it is very complete and covers a great deal of information. It is a very worthwhile buy!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Best Travel Guides
The "Eyewitness Guides" are the best travel guides I have ever used. I discovered them over 15 years ago and have been relying on them ever since. I own more than 15 of them, for major cities and countries throughout Europe. They are accurate and make travel much easier to plan if they are read in advance. I particularly like the architectural cutaways used for museums and sites of interest. The maps and geographical area breakdowns are also extremely helpful. I can't recommend them strongly enough.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - From Russia with love
We were planning to take a Russian River Cruise and wanted to have an advanced insite into what we were going to see.
This book as well as the Moscow book gave us knowledge to understand what we were going to see as well as giving us a method to review what we had seen and enjoy it further. We have found over the years that the Eyewitness books are the best books out there for us.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Great book series
I have purchased couple books from DK eyewitness, like: Prague, New york and Egypt. I couldn't live out Saint Petersburg this amazing city. great book with wonderful pictures

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Eyewitness Travel St. Petersburg 2007 edition
The book helped me a lot on my visit to St. Petersburg as I don't know Russian. The maps have the street names in English and Cyrillic Also the street index. There is also a metro map with stations written in both languages. The metro map and phrase book at the end - should be written in bigger letters. The book is very colorful and helps you to identify the sights and find your way.
I didn't read all the history section which seems very detailed but for a traveler - there should be a summery page of the important events and people who had an impact on St. Petersburg's history and Architecture.
Information that I found lacking or should be improved (Only from my experience in the city and I didn't see or visit all the sites)
1.Yosupuv Palace - no information about the beautiful interior and collections (p. 120) A gallery or hall guide should be added.
2. There are three guided walks ( P. 133-139) but a very important one "Dostoevsky walk" ("Crime and Punishment") ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Not what I thought
Though this map is detailed, it is not user friendly. I can't even find the names of highways! Perhaps the map is a little too detailed, which forced them to leave out some necessary, helpful information...

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Good atlas
Outside of Europe, it's hard to find up-to-date map books for Spain/Portugal. This one was published in 2009. The pages are clear and well organized, with plenty of detailed city maps. It may not be as good as a GPS, but it is a heck of a lot cheaper.

One limitation of this atlas is that, on facing pages, the map splits awkwardly across the spiral binding. But then the same thing happens with bound books, so it is not a fault of the spiral binding. And a clear advantage of the spiral binding is that it opens completely flat, so there is no worry about cracking the spine.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Hermoso, y muy detallado, atlas.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Look for another map book.
This book is just okay.

The thing I dislike is that the maps are very hard to read and the way they are annotated is very confusing.

Fortunately, while in Spain, my friend who was doing all the driving had another map book in the car from which I was able to navigate.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Generally helpful for trip planning
If you expect to be able to drive all over Spain with this atlas alone, you will be disappointed. I bought this primarily to help plan a driving trip across Northern Spain, and in conjunction with the GPS we got with our rental car, had virtually no trouble getting anywhere. There just isn't enough city detail. Word up: you should not plan to navigate to your hotel in Bilbao with anything less than directions from your hotel because even the GPS is useless there (too much construction).

The pages are not particularly heavy or laminated, so this book is definitely for grownups - a certain delicacy is required when moving between maps so that you don't tear anything.

All that said, I didn't tear any of the pages, I'm glad I bought it and would do it again.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Paul Theroux
I like the way this rather sour-puss writer tells it like it is on his travels, on a shoe string budget. In our current culture of materialism, where everything is hyped up into a commercial product, and sanitised and censored, it is refreshing to read Theroux, who tells it like it is. His descriptions of places can be very poetic and vivid, lasting in your mind, about countries far away, that have much beauty and much ugliness, but above all they are raw and real, in the travel writing of Theroux.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - The Old Patagonia Express
Great book..arrived in a few days. No issues at all.

In fact, I have never had any issues with ordering anything through Amazon!

Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - Unlikable
In the "new" introduction, the author talks about this opinion out there that travel books always end up being about the author him/herself. He goes on to imply that his book won't be like that. He also says he intended the book to teach us and illustrate to us the countries he visited. Well, he failed on both counts.
It's full of condescension, self-absorption, and odd, racism-tinged comments.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - If you like Paul Theroux
Though I owned a copy for years, I never read this until now, and it's vintage Theroux. He boards in Boston and is soon stopping in godforsaken outposts in the wilds of Central America, seemingly having an awful time and taking notes along the way. This formula has served him well for decades, and this was one of the earlier efforts. I wonder what's changed today along the route? Probably not much. It didn't make me want to take the same trip, so thanks Theroux for saving me the trouble.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - condescending, judgemental, and refreshingly honest
You may find Theroux's openness and directness refreshing, or you may find his brashness, arrogance, condescension, and hypocritical judgementalism revolting. If the latter is true, take heart that this book actually becomes enjoyable once you get past the first hundred pages or so...

Maybe others will better appreciate Theroux's attempts at humor, but the first hundred pages of this book could arguably compete for the most off-putting intro ever written. Before even beginning to prove a thing about himself (unless he's relying on an established reputation?), he devotes a few pages to trashing the state of current travel literature as being formulaic and overly focused on the destination vs. the journey. Beginning his story, he immediately picks a couple of confrontations with fellow passengers: correcting an elderly man who likens the New England winter landscape to Siberia ("Actually, there isn't this much snow in Siberia") and contradicting a 20 year old radical girl ("I wouldn't ... Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Get your kids excited about your Hawaiian vacation!
We were going to Hawaii and needed guidebooks. My 10 year old daughter went with me to the bookstore. There were three shelves of books about Hawaii! I asked her to look at some, and I looked at some. She disliked all of them except this DK Hawaii guide. I want my children to have a lot of input into planning family vacations, so if you do too, this is a great guide for your kids. They should be able to read at about the 4th grade level or higher. Among other things, my daughter found a once-a-year Hawaiian rodeo that we will be lucky enough to see during our vacation. Yee haw!

P.S.: Later, I found out our public library also has several copies of this book.

P.P. S.: I do not think this should be this ONLY Hawaii guide you use.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Outstanding resource
This well-written book is bursting with the information that you want and need for your next trip to Hawaii. Although the Fodor's series as well as the Frommer's series are well done, this surpasses them by far. Full of maps, colorful photos and reliable data, it will be easy to pack for your next trip to the islands.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Wonderful DK travel book, as usual
Whenever I am planning on taking a trip, one of my first courses of action is to consult the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides for that location.

I love the layout and the visual feel to the guides. The size of these books makes them ideal for carrying with you on vacation, while still packing in tons of information.

The Hawaii Eyewitness Travel Guide is no exception. The book is divided into sections on each of the islands and covers a variety of activities. After searching on the internet for hours, I was able to find the most reliable and precise information in this book.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Pre Trip Evaluation
This book is easy to read, concise and to the point. Seems to contain all of the sites a first time visitor would want to see. I purchased two other books on Hawaii but this will be our main guide. The others will serve if we want more details about the sites. I know others who have used this book in Hawaii and they highly recommend it.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Nice travel book with photos.

It is a great book, has a lot of color pictures, but dont have great maps and is difficult for travelers.
I recommend only for first time visitors to Hawaii.

We tour Spain every year, and the Red Guide is indispensable. Their standards are good, the information is accurate, and you can trust their recommendations. We tend to not overplan our trips, and the Red Guide makes it easy to find good, economical (or not!!) food and lodging anywhere in Spain.

My only gripe: the Restaurant in the Guggenheim Bilbao has never been given a star, or much mention. It is definitely one-star material.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - DANGER - do not carry into Tibet
In 2009 we took this book into Tibet and upon arrival in Lhasa, we were arrested and held under armed guard for 3 hours. Why? because the LP Guide to Tibet has a photograph of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in it. They found it in our luggage, we were eventually relased, book confiscated.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - very good
This is THE BEST Lonly Planet book I ever read!!!!
Wow. It has all the names written in English, Tibetan and Chinese, with the history of the places (without being scared from the Chinese). Obviously someone did a very good job touring all over Tibet. It even says how long it would take by bus, by car, or by trekking to each and every place.
It offers many trekking routs from few hours to few weeks.
I am truely impressed.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Finding Tibet in China
This guide has a level of detail that could only be provided by those who have been to this area of China. The status of Tibet is a sensitive issue both in China and in other parts of the world. It is nice to have a book such as this that acknowledges Tibet's uniqueness in geography, culture, people and religion. Not only is the level of detail significant, but there is great practicality in what is written. When traveling to a country half way around the world, a person look forward to being surprised in what they see and experience. But there are surprises that a traveler does not want to encounter and this book will help avoid some of those as well as potential embarrassments that can happen when one culture encounters another.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Travelling in Tibet
Tibet - Venture to a High Plain (Lonely Planet Country Guide) (2002) is a really good book to get you into the feel of Tibet. It is packed full of useful information, travel routes, trekking, permits, places to stay and eat etc. and had a very useful glossary term and Tibetan and Mandarin Chinese basic languages phrases at the back.

The book recommends places to visit, costing, time of the year to visits what to see, transport links, what to be aware off, question to ask, what not to ask, what to avoid and the endless rounds of permits and stop checkpoints from the Chinese PSB.

Good travel book, interspersed with history, facts, stories and much useful information with many maps.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Lonely Planet Tibet
The book was an invaluable resource of recent information about Tibet -- from weather, tours, customs, etiquette.
