El Mundo Sin Nosotros (Spanish Edition)
por: Alan Weisman Noviembre 26, 2007 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Only the waves remain...Our self-absorbed sensibilities struggle to comprehend a world without us. We are, in a sense, our own self-contained worlds processing puzzling amounts of information every nanosecond. Though most of us agree that the world exists "out there," some solipsistic holdouts notwithstanding, many probably think that we also play a role in "making" the world. After all, what's here to experience, describe and inhabit the world without us? A variation of the timeless paradox of non-being creeps in when a human-less void gets pondered. How can a world exist without those there to experience it? Ultimately, our egos nurture this pseudo-paradox. Billions of years passed on this planet devoid of the blessings and curses of human existence. Gazing at the sobering evidence, humans have played a tiny part in earth's vast history. Not to mention the growing evidence suggesting that our time here may have immediate limits. So how do we keep this now abstract world without us a mere thought experiment? ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Over-hypedI bought this book after hearing interviews with the author on several talk radio programs. When I read it I felt like it had been over-hyped. All of the most interesting parts of the book had been covered in the interviews and in the end it was more like a morality tale. On the bright side, I did stop using exfoliating cleansers that contain little plastic beads as the exfoliating agent. I find that the crushed walnut shells found in other products or salt scrubs work just as well if not better. Evaluación: - DisappointedThe book was relatively cheap. Based on the description I anticipated a paperback book in relatively good condition. Instead I received a hardcover book without a jacket. Generally this would actually be a pleasant surprise, except the back cover was covered in three layers of large white stickers which I soon realized had been applied to cover a large torn area. Evaluación: - The World Without UsIn the end, nature triumphs. This book explores what would occur if we humans were, alone of all life, to disappear in an instant, and all else left unimpeded to proceed upon its course. Nature would not return to its pre-human condition, because we have eliminated species and transplanted fauna. Nature, were we to leave it, would transform into something it wasn't before us; but nature, without us, would thrive, and in time, it would obscure nearly all trace of our having been here. The title is slightly misleading, because this isn't a book only about the way nature would overtake cities with greenery, water, and wild animals, and how it would wear down metals and plastics till they lose all artificial form. The author alternates in his discussion between how we have changed and held back nature to how nature would change and readjust if we were suddenly gone. For example, some species would not survive without us, or not survive quite as well, and some would survive ... Leer Más Evaluación: - very interestingI first saw this author on The Daily Show and had my wife get a copy for me. I thought it was well-written and I really enjoyed it. Hard to know how it was researched but it held my interest and I really enjoyed reading it. I hope we can save the earth so that it never has to go on without us. The first chapter, especially was terrific. 2.
Handbook of Knots, the (Spanish Edition)
por: Des Pawson 1998-07 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Ok For Learning To Tie From A BookI have gotten about 3/4 of the way through this book since my purchase. The first few knots you learn are very easy but once you get further in and the knots become more complicated, the description on what to do seems to get more confusing and less clear. I have had to turn to friends for help with a few but all in all this book is OK. Evaluación: - Booklist review is completely wrongI bought this book thinking it was exactly what I needed after reading the Booklist review on the page. This book is not aimed at sportsmen like the review implies, it is aimed at artists. I assumed I could look up knots by task, which was not the case; the knots are presented by type, which helps, but until you read the description of the knot, you won't know what to use it for and you still won't know whether it is the best knot for the task. "Need a secure loop tied in the middle of a rope during your next camping trip?" I will know what knot to use because of the review, but not this book. Further, the book spends a good deal of time on decorative knots, while not including (as other readers pointed out too) basic knots you actually use for the sports it recommends knots for. I would rate this book lower, but its not the book's fault the Booklist review seems to refer to a completely different book (knot just a non-updated edition) and the book does in fact have beautiful illustrations ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Wonderful BookThis is my second book from Des and he provides great information and tips. Great anybody that is interested in knots. Evaluación: - A survey of knot booksJust as there is no perfect knot, there is no perfect knot book. All have deficiencies of one sort or another. One common deficiency seems to be misleading or just plain wrong directions for tying a knot. Another deficiency is a failure to tell the reader when to use a particular, or more important, when not to use it. All the books suffer these deficiencies to one degree or another. Another deficiency is too many knots! But how could this be a deficiency, one might ask. Isn't more better? The answer is that the beginner needs to know the most useful knots that have the widest application. If the book contains knots that don't have wide application but doesn't tell the reader which ones are widely used and which ones aren't, how is the reader to know which ones to learn? Therefore, for a beginner, careful selection by the author is essential. Budworth, The Complete Book of Knots Of all the books, this is my pick as the best for a beginner. ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Great Portable Knotting BookThis is an excellent book. It's small 100ish knots and pocket size make it extremely portable. This is in contrast to another great knotting tome such as, Clifford Ashley's "Ashley Book of Knots" which is the definitive work on the subject. Which is large and heavy and very expensive. This book is a great value being in full color and it's jam packed with info for each knot. I particularly like the section on whippings that includes sewing palms. I've been a teacher of knots to scouts know for over twenty years and this is what I'd recommend to a young tenderfoot or second class scout if he was interested in learning more than the 10 required knots for 1st class rank. 3.

por: Lynne Cox Enero 09, 2007 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Who really wrote this??This book was assigned reading for my son who is a freshman at a marine science charter school. He immediately made the observation that at least two different people had written the text. There were large passages of short, fragmented sentences and then long sections of complicated, overly-descriptive prose. Sometimes single paragraphs included both styles. He said that is made it very difficult to read. Maybe the author began the book when she was 17 and added to it and finished it much later or more likely, maybe her editor or a professional writer re-wrote large portions so she could meet her deadline or capitalize on the success of her first book. Evaluación: - GraysonThis is such a charming, delightful, tender true account of someone who loves those creatures who live in the sea. A MUST for all ages to learn more about those creatures, and the reader cheers for Grayson when he finally finds his mother. Lynne Cox makes these dolphins, whales, and other fish become almost human, especially Grayson. Evaluación: - Tried Too HardThe author of this book clearly has a story to tell, but I think it would have better been told in a short article. Since there just wasn't enough story to fill a book, Lynne Cox begins repeating herself in the first few pages. This constant repetition, combined with a tangle of similes and sentences that jerk to a stop, makes it impossible to enjoy and engage with the extraordinary experience that gave birth to the words. By the end of the third chapter, I was skimming. I never made it to the fifth. Evaluación: - Overall a Fun BookI decided to read this book on my sisters recommendation. Aside from the fact that my greatest fear is floating around in the ocean and that I found most of it terrifing, Grayson is a delightful story and very entertaining. Not overwhelmingly long and a very quick read (even for someone as notoriously slow as me), I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a couple of hours to spare and wants something light and fun. Evaluación: - Lynne's my girl...Lynne Cox is one bad-ass mamma jamma. This book is definitely more of a parable-type, suitable for children's readin. I thought it was going to be something different, otherwise, it was a really well drafted work. 4.
Horses (Spanish Edition)
por: Yann Arthus-Bertrand 2006-03 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Very EducationalI found this book to be very educational with it's picture from around the world. There is a lot of diversity and the pictures are well taken. Many pictures staged which isn't always my favorite, but it was still an interesting book. Evaluación: - ExquisiteSent this to my sister for Christmas/birthday gift. The photos are beautifully formatted and have an interesting layout. Certainly not from an American perspective of horse photographs and a wonderful edition! Evaluación: - Horses PhotographyI bought this book for my 12 year old granddaughter who loves horses and rides. This book was beautifully done the photos were magnificent and she loves it and has taken time really appreciating the talent of the photographer it will be a treasure for her for many years Evaluación: - Unbelievable beautiful bookMy husband found this on a clearance table for $16.00. He asked if I wanted to pick up a picture book of horses. I said no because I thought he was talking about pictures of horses in sunny meadows, stuff you'd find on calenders. When I saw the book I instantly said yes. Yes the pictures are staged, as some have complained and they are dark as others have complained but the photography is brilliant, the lighting intriguing see pages 60, 163, on 175 look at how the red pops from the page and I love the staging and the narrative. If you want to go beyond calendar art and be challenged to see in a different way this book is for you. Evaluación: - Good book bad formated sizeA friend of mine had this book and when I saw it I knew I had to have one. What I liked best was the size, a fairly decent coffee table size book. When I received my copy I was really disappointed because it had been shrunk down to what looked like some kids book. It lost all of its richness and appeal. Even though it says there are more pictures than the larger book every pic looked dwarfed and out of balance. I gave it as a gift to a horse lover friend but would not buy this size again. I almost sent it back, but too much trouble. If it was in the original size I first saw it in I would have rated it a 5 for sure. 5.
Pillars of Hercules, the (Spanish Edition)
por: Paul Theroux 1999-06 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Entertaining but sloppyBeing a big fan of travel writing in general and Paul Theroux in particular, I have read most of his books. "The Pillars of Hercules" is beyond doubt one of his most entertaining, erudite and readable. In this work, Theroux travels around the Mediterranean coast, attempting to go from one Pillar of Hercules, Gibraltar, to the other end without ever going by airplane (as is his usual rule). He does this in two sections - first a trip from Gibraltar through Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Albania to Corfu; and half a year later he then resumes his trip with a free cruise trip through the eastern part, finishing off in Morocco. The only nations he does not visit are Montenegro, Libya and Algeria, for security reasons. As usual with Theroux, along the way he perfectly describes a great number of interesting and curious people he meets, whether locals or fellow travellers, and he provides the sardonic commentary on the countries and events his readers have come to expect from him. ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Another PC ivory tower elitistPage 95 The author writes of while speaking with Marseilles policemen of local crime " We have one big problem here, Arabs, Arabs,Arabs and Arabs..they are the cause of all the trouble..be very careful" "The French are entirely frank in discussing their racism" ( he again and again calls the policemen racists) it is not unusual that such an author lives both in Cape Cod and in Hawaii what is the crime rate in these places like from Blacks and Mexicans "0" while these plolicemen must protect the French public from criminals. The point is here you have a wealth, highly educated American author who live in Cape Cod and Hawaii calling people racists because they told him the truth. If the Auhtoer were in the New Orleans (Murder capital of the USA) and he observed the police statistics that 90%+ of homocieds were commited by African Americans in New Orleans would the author insist that the statistics are "racists" or is it that he can not except the imperical fact? It is this kind of snobbish, ... Leer Más Evaluación: - not really interestingas much as I wanted to enjoy this, I could not- Theroux comes across as arrogant and prolix- purports to travel as a "traveller" but winds up being nothing but an educated tourist who never ventures further than the superficial layer of things... well-written but it gets lost in tedious and unnecessary sardonic commentary and details that add little to the narrative: I was expecting better... Evaluación: - Pilllars of HerculesIn August my husband, and I are re-visiting the area mentioned in this book. The historical background included in this journal is most helpful to us amature history buff. Evaluación: - Travel around the Med with PaulThis was an enjoyable read for me and unlike many reviewers I found interesting many of the observations of the author about the various locales and the people. There was another popular travel author of whom I tired and Paul was a fresh individual with a writer's probing style. The general plan was clockwise around the border of the Mediterranean Sea beginning at Gibraltar and ending in Morocco, but as all with all travel plans some adjustments were required. Paul seemed to tire of the trip toward the end but it was an adventure. 6.

Evaluación: - Essential Reading for Cancer Patients as Well as AthletesThis is one of the most inspirational biographies I have ever read, and comes from the truly remarkable life experiences of a determined young man. I loved every word! Early in the book, Lance Armstrong says ". . . that cancer was the best thing that happened to me." He goes on to say, "When I was sick I saw more beauty and triumph and truth in a single day than I ever saw in a bike race." Overcoming cancer and becoming an athletic champion in the grueling sport of bicycle racing require a toughness of spirit, mind, and body that is hard for most of us to imagine. This inspirational book portrays beautifully how one can start with the right spirit and overcome enormous obstacles. Although his doctors told him he had a 40 percent chance of surviving stage three testical cancer, this was mostly to keep his morale up. After he had recovered, his doctor admitted that is chances were around 3 percent, instead. While he was being treated for the cancer, no ... Leer Más 10.

por: Kenn Kaufman Abril 01, 2005 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Just for the names! This book is a must if you travel to the border area or are birding in areas where there is a Spanish speaking population. The names of many of the birds are not nearly as intuitively translated into Spanish as one might think. You can try all day to explain "woodpecker" but knowing "carpentero" makes short work out of asking locally where the they might be hanging out! It's also great in getting kids interested in birding and realizing that they are all different birds - evey duck is not simply a pato and every heron a garza! Evaluación: - Great book for Spanish speakers/learners & bird aficionadosIf you're improving your Spanish and would like to be able to communicate information about your bird watching adventures in Spanish, this is a great book. It not only has the common name of the birds in Spanish, the latin term, but also the English common name just so you don't get confused. Evaluación: - Una excelente guíaBut beware. This is not just a useful guide for the Southwest. Most of the birds of the Chihuahuan Desert (the largest desert in North America, covering from parts of TX, NM and AZ to Central Mexico) are depicted in this guide. I would go as far as to say that this guía is the best Spahish guide for North Central Mexico. I live in Torreon (SW Coahuila) and this is much better for this part of the country than Peterson's Aves de México. Evaluación: - ¡Por Fin! Las Aves en españolKenn Kaufman has done it again, taking bird guides and birding to new heights by creating a field guide for Spanish-speaking audiences in the United States and abroad. For English speaking birders, having the names of all the birds in Spanish is a great resource, but translations of the introductory material on birding, bird plumage topography, identification, and conservation are also invaluable. Opening this book is like seeing the birds of North America again for the very first time, as I learn to differentiate the Cuitlacoche de Pico Curvo from the Cuitlacoche de Pico Corto. Can you tell the difference between machos y hembras? Have you ever seen a Gorrión Arlequín? Any English birder with even a smidgen of Spanish should get a copy and enjoy their familiar birds in this new cultural world. Now that Kaufman and translator Fischer have done the hard work of bringing this book to press, the birding community needs to step up and get the book into the hands of people who can most benefit ... Leer Más Evaluación: - Muchas Gracia, Kenn!Kenn Kaufman, along with Patricia Manzano Fischer, have produced an outstanding field guide of North American birds in Spanish. It is a translation of the English field guide, and gives all the names of the birds in Spanish along with the scientific name (as well as the English name in parentheses.) I believe this book will allow many Spanish speaking birders to more fully enjoy birding in the U.S. and Canada, and especially here in the Southwest. This new edition will also help break the language barrier between English and Spanish speaking birders, and should be an important overall enhancement to birders since it is the first of a kind. It is interesting to see the bird calls and songs in Spanish. I do wish that the Pibí Mayor (Greater Pewee) ... Leer Más |
