Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - The Latitude Of Mind That Galvanized A Longitude Of Ideas
John Harrison was an eighteenth century English clockmaker who embraced his profession with a passion. His pioneering work with seafaring clocks eventually led to one of the most distinguished achievements of his time- the north-south demarcation of global longitude. Longitude is award-winning author Dava Sobel's account of the decades-long saga that brought about Harrisons' momentous breakthrough.

Any history buff who dares look back over the turbulent ups and downs of maritime navigation will sooner or later hit on the longitude debacle that gripped much of Europe between the 15th and 17th centuries. A string of devastating incidents across international waters prompted an urgent examination by political and scientific establishments of how best to accurately map out the oceans that formed such a crucial part of global commerce. The egregious positional miscalculation by one Admiral Clowdisley Shovell, whose flotilla ran aground on the isles of Scilly off the coast of ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 2 out of 5 stars - What does she mean
When I saw this book I was really excited, but my excitement waned with each page. This topic is very graphic in nature and guess what - no diagrams. No explanations concerning the methods just a statement that something could be done buy something or other but not really how it was done. You're left with incomplete pictures of any particular method or subject. Many times I just wanted to throw this book in the garbage out frustration. I can't say I really enjoyed the book.

If the author would have actually tried to learn and do navigation on the water the book would been written differently and better I suspect

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Short but fun story
Sobel has crafted a story about the invention of a sea-worthy watch that helped sailors find their Longitude. The book is about 180 pages including index. It would have been 100 pages in standard format. That is one of the reasons it can now be had at 1/3 its original price. Sobel is a competent reporter who often uses cliches and puns to keep her readers interested. It is light and entertaining, I recommend it but just for fun.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Fascinating book
Nice telling of the story of the quest to solve the longitude problem, something that not too many people today would know about, but without which modern civilization would be impossible.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - A Good Little Book About Some Little-Known History
Until I recently saw a list of books about inventions in the Wall Street Journal, I was completely unaware that there had been great difficulties in developing a method to identify the longitude of a location at sea. Dava Sobel, in this short (175 pages, not counting acknowledgments, bibliography, and index) book, gives a good historical background of the problem and various methods to solve it, and does quite a good job narrating the competition to win quite a substantial prize by developing a method that worked consistently and precisely.

I would have been happier had the book contained more about the exact methods used by John Harrison to overcome the various difficulties caused by changes in temperature and humidity and by the motion of the ships themselves. My guess is that the publisher had put a limit on the length of the book that made this impossible.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Only the waves remain...
Our self-absorbed sensibilities struggle to comprehend a world without us. We are, in a sense, our own self-contained worlds processing puzzling amounts of information every nanosecond. Though most of us agree that the world exists "out there," some solipsistic holdouts notwithstanding, many probably think that we also play a role in "making" the world. After all, what's here to experience, describe and inhabit the world without us? A variation of the timeless paradox of non-being creeps in when a human-less void gets pondered. How can a world exist without those there to experience it? Ultimately, our egos nurture this pseudo-paradox. Billions of years passed on this planet devoid of the blessings and curses of human existence. Gazing at the sobering evidence, humans have played a tiny part in earth's vast history. Not to mention the growing evidence suggesting that our time here may have immediate limits. So how do we keep this now abstract world without us a mere thought experiment?

Evaluación: 2 out of 5 stars - Over-hyped
I bought this book after hearing interviews with the author on several talk radio programs. When I read it I felt like it had been over-hyped. All of the most interesting parts of the book had been covered in the interviews and in the end it was more like a morality tale.

On the bright side, I did stop using exfoliating cleansers that contain little plastic beads as the exfoliating agent. I find that the crushed walnut shells found in other products or salt scrubs work just as well if not better.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Disappointed
The book was relatively cheap. Based on the description I anticipated a paperback book in relatively good condition. Instead I received a hardcover book without a jacket. Generally this would actually be a pleasant surprise, except the back cover was covered in three layers of large white stickers which I soon realized had been applied to cover a large torn area.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - The World Without Us

In the end, nature triumphs. This book explores what would occur if we humans were, alone of all life, to disappear in an instant, and all else left unimpeded to proceed upon its course. Nature would not return to its pre-human condition, because we have eliminated species and transplanted fauna. Nature, were we to leave it, would transform into something it wasn't before us; but nature, without us, would thrive, and in time, it would obscure nearly all trace of our having been here.

The title is slightly misleading, because this isn't a book only about the way nature would overtake cities with greenery, water, and wild animals, and how it would wear down metals and plastics till they lose all artificial form. The author alternates in his discussion between how we have changed and held back nature to how nature would change and readjust if we were suddenly gone. For example, some species would not survive without us, or not survive quite as well, and some would survive far ... Leer Más

I first saw this author on The Daily Show and had my wife get a copy for me. I thought it was well-written and I really enjoyed it. Hard to know how it was researched but it held my interest and I really enjoyed reading it. I hope we can save the earth so that it never has to go on without us. The first chapter, especially was terrific.

Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - Sloppy e-book (The Right Stuff)
Shame on the publisher (Picador/Farrar, Straus and Giroux) for the sloppy production of this ebook. The Right Stuff To care so little about the quality of their product is an insult to both the author and his readers. Don't buy the ebook version until the publisher makes it right.
The original book, as written by Tom Wolfe, deserves 5 stars. It's highly entertaining as well as informative. In this review, I'm only rating the quality of the ebook which has at least five dozen scanning errors, some of which are confusing and make it impossible to figure out what the author intended. Until the publisher fixes it, spend your money on something else. There's plenty of quality ebooks available.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - HOW THE FUTURE BEGAN...
Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff" is a fascinating, in-depth and personal account of the test pilots who pushed the envelope between 1947 and 1963. From Chuck Yeager's historic flight in the Bell X-1, through the seven missions of Project Mercury, and concluding with Yeager's near-catastrophic flight in the NF-104, the book is an enthralling look at the early days of NASA, and of the men and women who made it happen! Of particular interest are passages that didn't make it into the terrific film adaptation, including the failed attempt of astronauts such as Jim Lovell and Pete Conrad to be among the seven; NASA's "shunning" of Scott Carpenter after what they viewed as a near-disastrous flight of Aurora 7, and how Wally Schirra's flight of Sigma 7 was seen as proof of Carpenter's messy handling of the fuel, and; the near-success of test pilots outside of NASA to successfully put a man in space before the first Mercury flights. A thrilling book for readers of history and of good storytelling, I highly ... Leer Más

I have read The Right Stuff three times (a previous copy). I made the mistake of loaning the book to somebody but I don't recall who. I consider it such a "must have" book in my library that I have replaced it.

Evaluación: 2 out of 5 stars - Great book, KINDLE version FULL OF ERRORS
Great book, completely flubbed by Amazon. Is it so hard to run a spell check on a Kindle manuscript before publishing it? This book is filled with ridiculous OCR screwups: letters cl being turned into a nonsensical d, for instance. And there are a lot of them. Amazon needs to fix this book and send us all an updated version that doesn't hurt our eyes or our brains.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the most entertaining nonfiction books I've read
Wolfe really keeps you on the edge of your seat, and despite being accused of taking liberties with the literal truth still creates a book that will teach you a great deal about the history of the early days of the American space program. This is one of the only nonfiction books I've read that reads like a well written novel. I will be diving further into the Wolfe cannon because this book was so good.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Not Only the Best Concise Spanish-English/English-Spanish Dictionary
I use this edition myself. It's not only the best of the so-called "concise" dictionaries (in my opinion, nearly 1,300 pages is hardly "concise"), but it rivals in range and usefulness the most exhaustive of the larger, hardcover volumes. It's true that the larger, hard-to-handle book obviously contains more words and definitions, but I look at it this way: How often do you need to consult a larger book? I keep Larousse on my desk. At the moment, I'm preparing a Spanish version of my new translation of Mark's Gospel in More Bible Wisdom for Modern Times: Selections from the Early New Testament. Right now, I'm up to Chapter 12 and not once have I been forced to leave my desk and search a larger book for a more suitable word. Admittedly, Mark's vocabulary is pretty basic (and I have reflected this simplicity in my translation), but, if anything, that makes this Larousse even more useful, as it forces me to resist any temptations to use a less familiar or more picturesque vocabulary.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Very Helpful
I've been able to find the meaning of words I couldn't find in my other Spanish/English Dictionary. Great book, especially the background on the words.

Evaluación: 3 out of 5 stars - Wait for the second edition
This text seems very popular and is useful for a cursory introduction to an extremely complex concept. It is "hybrid" between a course on neuroanatomy and classroom application. Perhaps more anatomy than many classroom teachers need and a bit watered down for the serious student.

The pages of classroom suggestions are good for those who continue reading until they get to those sections.

My suggestion is to wait until the second edition comes out and get the updated version. The information in the area of neuroeducation is developing very rapidly and even though the book is only five years old, it has fallen behind the research findings.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - How the brain learns
This is an interesting title. I am a Montessori preschool teacher and I find the study of brain development and how children learn to be fascinating and wonder-filled reading.

Evaluación: 2 out of 5 stars - The Bible and Science
1. The Bible is not meant to be scientific. (No doubt one can have a point of view and play with numbers to get everything to line up, but seriously)
2. Science is not meant to be biblical. (Although it sure does require a lot of faith)

That being said, I have to ask myself over and over again - Do these authors even read the Bible?
I've now finished this book and actually feel guilty for not just turning to my Bible for answers.

In my opinion, The Case for Christ is a far better book. That book dealt with more realistic "evidence" or "facts" than The Case for a Creator (which is filled with theory's and idea's).
This book can be an interesting read, but one shouldn't take it seriously. For me, it has been a terrible distraction from my faith.

P.S. For those that take Lee Strobel's "skeptic" approach seriously, I think you missed the point. I took it as a theme or style for writing, not as his literal approach.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Fantastic Book!
I have an earned doctorate and have read The Case for A Creator three times and am going through it a fourth time. Strobel puts his training as a journalist (writing as simply as possible) and as an attorney (using critical thinking and following the evidence) together to produce an interesting, informative, and up-to-date evaluation of scientific research into the macro-universe (the universe) and the micro-universe (atoms and molecular structures). He interviews world-renown scholars who may have begun their scientific career as atheists, but have honestly followed the evidence to the most logical and sane conclusion: there must have been an Intelligent Designer. Strobel makes, I think, a powerful case that modern scientific research and cosmotology actually point mankind to the God of Creation, not to a blind evolutionary hypothesis. Get the book for reference and the CD to listen to over and over to take it ALL in! Enjoy!

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - 1st time user very satisfied
This was my 1st time ordering from Amazon. The book cost less than I expected,
and was in perfect condition. This was an excellent experience, and I would
certainly recommend it to my friends.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Great book for children
A really good book that helps children to think about the probabilities of design behind our very existence. Well done to Lee Strobel, this really is an excellent resource which will help children to think for themselves. Materialists should not fear children reading such books, as after all, shouldn't all views be heard?

Some other very good Christian books that are worth looking at are the fiction books 'Godstone' & 'Chosen Ones' and also the science book 'Who Made God?':

Godstone - The Kairos Boxes

Chosen Ones (Aedyn Chronicles, The)

Who Made God? Searching for a Theory of Everything

Evaluación: 1 out of 5 stars - Makes Christians look ignorant
Saint Augustine, a much wiser Christian than Lee Strobel will ever be, urged Christians not to spout scientific nonsense in conjunction with their Christian beliefs. Augustine worried that educated persons would recognize the stupidity of the scientific arguments and then hold Christianity itself to be equally stupid. Strobel should have heeded Augustine's advice.

Like most creationist books, the drivel in Strobel's CFAC is too extensive to be described in detail, but here are some highlights.

1. There's nothing wrong with authors having agendas. In fact, it's hard to imagine why an author would write anything at all if the author did not have an agenda. But it is objectionable when someone with a completely obvious agenda tries to pretend he's unbiased. Does Strobel really think we're stupid enough to believe he's an unbiased journalist here? Most, if not all, of Strobel's "expert" witnesses are associated with the same right-wing "think tank," the Dishonesty Institute. ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 2 out of 5 stars - Don't Bother
This text was required for a spanish class. I have to say it is the least helpful text I have ever used. The reviews in the back of the book are alright and the cultural information is great, but the main exercises are a bit confusing. I felt that there was a lot of information missing in the lessons. I had to fill in the gaps on my own with additional reference guides. If you are interested in cultural readings this might be alright but if you want a strong grammar foundation I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Evaluación: 4 out of 5 stars - Good Workbook
This review workbook is written entirely in English, except for the exercises which of course are in Spanish. If you are a native English speaker learning Spanish, this book does a great job of explaining rules, and perhaps not just as review. There are a TON of exercises for each section, so if you need a lot of repetitions this is the book for you.

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - Same Content as Ultimate Spanish Review & Practice
This is an excellent workbook, but it is nearly impossible to find a copy of the answer key. As of the date I'm writing this, the only used copy here on Amazon is listed for $999.00 (seriously), and the publisher will only ship to school addresses. Bummer, because without answers this workbook loses a lot of its potential value for independent learners.

The good news is that the content of this edition of this workbook (ISBN: 9780844274126) appears to be exactly the same as the content of Ultimate Spanish Review & Practice (ISBN: 9780071492409), which has answers to all of the exercises in the back of the book. I haven't checked every single page, but I randomly compared about 10 different pages in different chapters (for example, Chapter 3: Exercise N) and these books are the same. The only difference is that the workbook has space for writing answers to each exercise right in the book, while USR&P does not. Of course, this also means USR&P is smaller and easier to tote around. BTW, USR&P ... Leer Más

Evaluación: 5 out of 5 stars - A Nice Tool...
Let me start by saying this is a wonderful tool for practicing/remembering your Spanish Grammar. It's huge and has tons of practice problems. It explains pretty much everything (grammar related) that you are likely to need in your Spanish studies--it's very comprehensive. You would have to dig very hard into advanced material to find topics not covered here. It will keep you busy for a very long time, and it's great to go back to every once in a while for reviewing `rusty' concepts. It's one of the few Spanish learning aids that I have kept after going through it. I'm now going through it once again (several years after doing it the first time around). It also has nice cultural notes in Spanish and vocabulary lists of useful words, verbs, and other parts of speech.

This book has a separate answer booklet (sold separately). In my opinion, this is a good thing (other than the extra expense) because the book is quite thick and heavy. It's nice not to have to flip back and forth to the answers all the ... Leer Más

I bought this book because I used to get it from the local library whenever I needed to do a medical interpretation. I finally decided to order it from Amazon so I don't have to head to the library whenever I get an interpretation assignment. This is a pocket-size book, but it has a wealth of terms that you can actually use if you're an English-Spanish interpreter, translator, a health professional or student, practicing or studying in the U.S., whose first language is Spanish, or an English-speaking health professional who sees Spanish-speaking patients. It is very handy whenever I come across a term that doesn't come to mind immediately or that I need to double-check.

I am a General Surgeon and lead a team of volunteers every year to work in Guatemala. I have bought copies of this book for all members of our team. It has concise, appropiate and complete entries for the clinical situations we encounter on a regular basis. No other dictionary that we have tried over the years comes close to the utility of this one. Other larger and more expensive dictionaries such as Mosby's (approximately $275 on Amazon) are not as comprehensive when it comes to the phrases and vocabulary necessary to communicate in a clinical setting. This little book is a gem and I recommend it highly.
