por: Mark Twain, Tim Mucci Junio 30, 2010 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Funny and enjoyableMark Twain sure knows how to write funny stories - and "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is filled with them. My main criticism with the book is that there is no cohesive story. Instead there are several stories that are not connected to each other at all. The non-connected stories are funny, but there is no relation between them. It isn't until the book reaches the end where Twain begins to craft a cohesive storyline. It's definitely filled with some hilarious moments and great characters (Tom, Aunt Polly, and Huck), but as a whole I wouldn't classify this as a classic work of literature. For that you would have to read Twain's masterpiece "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Evaluación: - ScamI was planning a trip with my 5 children and we were excited to listen to the tapes. It was a disaster. Some of the tapes were broken and others were taped over with pop music. I could not wait to throw them away. I will never buy used from Amazan again. Evaluación: - This seller never sent my book!I never heard from this seller, despite emailing for a status update. I ended up going to a local B&N for the book, as my son needed it for summer reading. Amazon wrote to ask me for a review. I will be asking for a refund. I had forgotten because it was only a few bucks. Evaluación: - A Classic! My son was required to read this book this summer and he enjoyed it very much. It's a classic and I would recommend it even if it were not a requirement. Enjoy! Evaluación: - Truly Great; can be enjoyed on Several LevelsSure, this is a story about a boy. It is also a sharp delineation of the American character, a myth that includes episodes that harken back to Plato, Homer, the Old and New Testament, among other influences. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer presents a new kind of hero, a distinctly American hero, to world literature. From his low estate, due to his poverty, youth and incivility, Tom Sawyer surveys the grand vista of small town American life - and, by extension - America, and by his innocence and natural kindheartedness, redeems it from bigotry, intolerance, hypocrisy and all the ills that attend it. It is through Tom Sawyer's eyes that America is revealed as fresh and vital, even though in the novel he has no standing or prestige in the society. He eventually earns his prestige by a series of adventures that draws the town together and elicits it's highest potentialities. Tom Sawyer is the catalyst and the figure around which the Town realizes it's own highest ideals. All this ... Leer Más 2.

The magic contained within the pages of Stardust makes for a fantastic fairy tale for adults. Neil Gaiman has created a motley cast of characters in Stardust - witches, fairies, gypsies, ghosts, sprites, unicorns and of course, the star. Our hero Tristran Thorne sets out on his quest and is quickly swept up in the adventure of his young life. Tristran is honorable and kind - a charming and extremely likable character. Leer Más Evaluación: - A decent story of fantasy and loveI saw the movie Stardust and was interested in reading the book to hope for a better story because everyone always says books are better than movies. And the book had some variations from the movie, but overall it was pretty similar. Some parts were a tad slow though and honestly I didn't think the book was really better than the movie. They were just different. I still think the book was worth reading, and definitely so if you haven't seen the movie. Evaluación: - Not too badPerhaps I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't seen the movie first... I couldn't help making comparisons as I was reading it. It was a good story, lots of imagination and originality. Also, the writing style was clear and entertaining to read. But, the love story was kind of lacking, with point A to B with no stops in between. The ending was also anticlimactic. It wasn't a bad book at all, but not my favorite fantasy novel either. I give it 3.5 stars. Evaluación: - We deserve good fairy talesAdults deserve good fairy tales, too ~Neil Gaiman. I have trouble being honest and critical with a well written book. Someone like Gaiman, in all his work so far, is able to create a world and characters that just pull you in and don't let you go. He is able to create the myths that make me suspend disbelief and the critical and writerly mind and just let go. He does it here in _Stardust_. I have nothing to add in terms of the conflict or the characters because I lived and interacted with them. Books like this remind me why I loved reading so much when I was younger, before I sucked all the fun out by going to graduate school. Perhaps the resolution was telepgraphed to the reader, but that only comes out on reflection. Go get everything he's ever written, and remind yourself why you liked reading too. We deserve good fairy tales, and we get them from Neil Gaiman. Thank you Neil. Evaluación: - Eerm....Slightly shocked when I came across a ...explicit scene at page eleven. Good book besides that. 3.

por: Daniel Clowes Mayo 25, 2005 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - Revives the Ghosts of High School AngstGhost World is a lovely, quirky, completely authentic graphic novel. It tells the tale of two teenage misfit girls as they wander aimlessly through the suburban dystopia of 1990s America. They are too smart for their own good and their friendship is complex - needy, supportive, and questioning all at the same time. These are the teens that sit at a separate lunch table in high school, mocking the system, unable to find relationships with boys because no one measures up to their expectations, while they are not accepted by the mainstream themselves. It's been said that the more specific, the more personal the story, the more universal appeal it has. This is certainly true of Ghost World. The characters of Ghost World are so finely drawn, so specific that they are like none you've ever met before. Yet you know exactly who they are. You've seen kids like them. Maybe you were like them. I have read no other graphic novel that so perfectly illustrates the teen angst ... Every panel is either hilarious or disturbing or both. Clowes even parodies himself, giving main character Enid (played by Thora Birch in the entertaining Terry Zwigoff film from 2001) a crush on the cartoonist -- then revealing her disgust when she actually sees him in person. The relationship between Enid and her cuter but more insecure best friend Becky feels so true, so real and ultimately so damn heartbreaking. Clowes throws in these moments that would smack of sentimentality in anyone else's hands, but instead play as genuinely moving when surrounded by so much oddity and nihilistic banter. A fun, creepy, silly, hilarious, moving graphic novel. This book is a subversive little gem. Evaluación: - Definitely cute!!I bought this and a Ghost World poster that's on here. I love both. This little book is very cute for that Ghost World fan in your life. I particularly enjoyed the character, Miko because in the end she went for what she wanted, not what others wanted for her. I thoroughly enjoyed this and will look into Mr. Tomine's other books. Evaluación: - Shortcomings with some shortcomingsShortcomings tells the story of a 30 year old Japanese-American man who is in a relationship with a Japanese-American woman. Though they have been together for years, their relationship is now on the rock as the two people try to understand the role of their ethnicity in their lives and relationships. The main male character finds Caucasian women to be more attractive than Japanese women, which his girlfriend believes is racist. The couple decides to separate when Ben's girlfriend goes away to NYC. After some failed relationships and one-night stands, Ben decides to follow her only to find that she is hiding her own secret (though it is an extremely anti-climatic secret). Evaluación: - No redeeming qualitiesTrivial, overrated, and only popular because of a growing trend towards graphic novels, Adrian Tomine's writing is essentially only worth anything because it attempts to combat racism towards Asian Americans, which is a valiant effort. It does so, however, in an extremely blunt and artless way. The story is badly written, and the characters are one-dimensional. Evaluación: - Well written and nicely drawnI just bought "Shortcomings" by Tomine along with a whole batch of goodlooking graphic novels, some of them from Marvel/DC/Vertigo but also some indie stuff like this one. Very well done I must say. Really drew me into the story of these flawed people in their late 20's. Tintin in Tibet
por: Herge 1998-01 Evaluación Promedio: ![]() Opinión del Usuario Evaluación: - The one in white with the yetiThe white expanses of the Himalayan mountains, the sparseness of the pared down plot and the cast, all come as a welcome antidote to the huge clutter of ideas, characters and slapstick of The Red Sea Sharks, making Tintin in Tibet (even the title has a neat simple alliterative symmetry) a rather atypical adventure, one inspired by a personal crisis - Hergé at this time suffering from nightmares and visions of whiteness - rather than being merely the usual Tintin investigative jaunt through exotic lands meeting interesting characters. Atypical it might be, but in other ways it's a pure distillation of everything that is great about Hergé's technique - both in terms of the storyline and in terms of the purity of the 'ligne-claire' artwork. Tintin's tenacity to get to the truth is never more driven than here in his desire to travel to Nepal and embark on a seemingly futile expedition in search of his young Chinese friend Chang who has surely perished with the rest of the passengers and crew ... Leer Más Evaluación: - The most celebrated Tintin bookProbably the most celebrated Tintin book, it shows our boy hero's reunion after over 25 years with his friend from The Blue Lotus, Chang Chong-Chen (real-life friends Hergé and Zhang Chong-ren, upon whom the character of Chang Chong-chen had been based, had actually went nearly 50 years without meeting); or rather it chronicles the attempt to reunite - on his way to Brussels, the plane Chang is on goes down in the Himalayas, with everyone on the plane dead or missing. But Tintin feels that Chang is still alive, so he and Haddock go off to rescue him, enjoying a few misadventures in Delhi first en route to Calcutta. Marching off, they head on foot into the hills, where there are various misadventures. The scenery is breathtaking and the art impeccable, very much in line with Hergé's first story set in the mountains, Prisoners of the Sun (which also had Tintin befriending a young boy). Haddock is, of course, always good for a laugh with his brave buffoonery, and Snowy quite funny in yet another drinking ... Along with Captain Haddock and Snowy, he travels through New Delhi and Nepal, before getting to the mountains. In Tibet they experience the hazards of mountain climbing, the gentle Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and the Yeti, before rescuing Chang. My favourite Tintin book is fun and educational for both kids and adults, quite often being people's first introduction to Tibet, its beautiful landscape and culture. In 2006, Tintin became the first fictional character to be awarded the Dalai Lama's Truth of Light award. Evaluación: - A Desperate Rescue Mission...The Belgian artist Herge wrote many popular stories featuring his cartoon hero Tintin, a young journalist. "Tintin in Tibet" is surely one of the more exotic of the adventures. It was first published in 1960, when mountain climbing in the Himalayas was still frontpage news, and before China had closed the famous Tibetan monasteries. As the story opens, Tintin, his faithful dog Snowy, his seafaring friend Captain Haddock, and the eccentric Professor Calculus are on vacation in the European Alps. Tintin learns in short order that his old friend Chang (from "The Blue Lotus") is on his way to visit, then the dreadful news that Chang's airliner has gone down in Nepal, with no known survivors. Tintin, on the basis of a dream in which Chang calls for help, seeks off on a rescue mission, accompanied by the skeptical Captain Haddock. Others on the product page are long-time fans, beginning in childhood, with "Tintin in Tibet" as the favorite in the series of books written and illustrated by Herge. Not knowing anything about the back story, I will begin. First, the book itself. It is 11 3/4 inches high and 8 3/4 inches wide with full-color illustrations on slick paper, making this a very nice looking graphic novel. The book is well worth its price. The covers of the other 24 adventures are shown on the back cover. I'm not sure who Tintin is--maybe a teenager, or the Captain, definitely someone fond of Tintin and uncle-like, who watches out for Tintin, who in turn really doesn't need watching over. The story is about this young teenage girl (Thoru) who ends up living with the Shoma family for a while and accidentally discovers their family secret, they turn into the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac (plus the cat) when hugged by a member of the opposite sex. The plot sounds kind of wacky and ridiculous, but it's through this ridiculousness and the way it is well drawn and the drama staged that this story works. Evaluación: - It really is a bit confusing. As an American whose undergrad studies revolved around European subjects, I am still quite ignorant of Japanese customs/cultures/naming conventions and so on. This book confuses me in a few different ways: 1, as another reviewer pointed out, several of the characters look nearly identical, and I had to go back and reread several portions to figure out who was whom. 2, the variations on naming are awkward to me. Tohru is variously referred to as Tohru, Tohru-san, Tohru-chan, Tohru-kun, Honda-san, sometimes even Kyoko-san, which is her mother's name. This isn't so bad, because Tohru is always Tohru no matter what is on the end of it, but for example Hatori is sometimes Ha'ri and sometimes Haa-san and this happens with all the characters who have more than 2 syllables in their names. There are some weird cultural things drawn in here that I don't understand: a sketch of Tohru's mom in middle school, and she's wearing what looks like a surgical mask? (She was not a doctor.)
