Evaluación: - INCREDIBLY slow unless you understand the symbolism
To understand the book, it's a good idea to understand the meaing behind colors and to identify the pages where the colors appear and how they correlate with the books content and overall message. This is not a novel that is simply an enjoable read. Constant analyzation and understanding is needed throughout the process of reading it. Only after understanding does the novel become a literary classic and icon.

I always wanted to read The Great Gatsby but for some reason or another it always eluded me. Back in college, almost everyone had read this "great" masterpiece of literature. I'm glad I finally had the opportunity to sink my teeth into this novel and see once and for all what it was all about.

The story was wonderful to read and its subject matter was appealing for the most part. The industrial age must of been a sight to behold. The author does an adequate job of detailing the age and the times of West Egg. Although the lavishness and splendor of the many parties that took place in West Egg were nicely detailed, I found the imagery somewhat sparse and lacking detail at times. The author does a great job of portraying his characters and their morals but for some reason I didn't find this in itself to capture my attention. I'm not sure if it's possible to not like this book. It's eloquently written and interesting. A classic love story, that will remain timeless. If you were forced to read it in high school and didn't like it I suggest a quick revisit to the timeless tale. It was wonderful. I remember reading The Great Gatsby in my high school English class and thinking it was boring. In retrospect, I think I was an idiot. Reading it ten years later was a truly amazing experience. Fitzgerald lays down some stunning prose and brings a lavish era of American history to life. I was struck with how that culture of excess in the 1920s seemed eerily similar to the mid 2000s. . . and right before another crash, nonetheless. Great book. If you tried to read it once and failed, try again. You won't regret it.

Books are dangerous. They're full of ideas that make people think about the world, feel passion, and perhaps act out. That's not good for society; it causes conflict, uprising, and interference with the status quo. People who read and think scare people who don't, so most citizens have happily given up the right to decide what to think about and now let the government fill their brains with constant loud mindless entertainment. This managed input has equalized society; nobody feels inferior to anyone else and there's no conflict anymore. Dull minds, constant entertainment, and conformity make society run smoothly.

Evaluación: - Brilliant, depressing, electrifying, profound!!
Ray Bradbury's books make for immediate, mesmerizing, entirely compulsive reading. His prose is electrifying in its use of poetic metaphor and dramatic syntax. The reader is instantly plunged into an alien culture, or a terrifying future, and is not really released even after the last page is turned.

I had been postponing reading this novel for years. I am, after all, a confirmed bibliophile. Reading a novel with a plot involving the burning of books would, I kept telling myself, be too traumatic for me.

I finally decided to wade in.

Need I say that I only put the book down when I absolutely had to, when reality intruded? The novel carried me along on its relentless wave of narrative. Of course, I tried not to picture the books burning as I read, but Bradbury wouldn't let me. Not when he was describing them as living creatures, dying, their pigeon wings flapping.... This book is all about one man's struggle against the status quo- even more frightening for him because he lives in a world where firemen are not the rescuers but the fire starters. They rush to houses not to put out fires but to burn them, and only those that hold the most heinous crimes against the state- books.

Guy Montag did his duty as a fireman till one day a girl- a free thinker- held a dandelion under his chin and woke him up.

His world turned upside down he made a stand and then had to run for his life- watched all the while by inhabitants of the city glued to their wall tv sets, numbed and dumbed down by the very thing that holds them enthralled.

Yet, Montag makes his escape, becoming more important than he ever could have realized while his world disintegrates around him- literally.

I just finished reading this book for the third time and it simply gets better with age, like a vintage wine. How can we picture a world where there are no books, particularly novels?

Like most of us on Amazon, I'm a voracious reader and have been since I was in elementary school. Books transport us to another world and allow us to have insight into lives, situations other countries that we may never otherwise experience. Good books pose tough questions about ethics, coping with adversity, and dealing with loss, sorrow or facing hard choices -- for example, Sophie's Choice, when she had to choose between which one of her children she would save from the Nazis.

When I was 19 and I first read this book, I thought it was just about banning books. I didn't fully comprehend the depth of mind control that would be involved in restricting information, and consequently creating a reality that is so sanitized that it bears no resemblance to real life. Jane Eyre is a masterpiece.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. The protagonist, Jane, is narrating her biography, and the chronicle commences when she was ten years old, growing up with her cruel aunt and equally cruel cousins, who make her childhood miserable. She could hardly wait to get out of their grip to a school for orphanages, run by a saintly woman. There she befriends a girl, Amy, a noble and true friend, dying of consumption. Jane thrives in the school, later becoming a teacher for two years.

But the real drama unfolds when she gets a job as a tutor for a young girl, Adel, a protege of Mr. Rochester, a wealthy bachelor. They fall in love and Mr. Rochester proposes marriage. I am currently using this book for my Spanish 1 and 2 class and it is a help especially the dictionary in the back! I would def recommend getting the lab manual and the workbook with it though because if you are new to the spanish language it can be very difficult to keep up and practice makes all the difference. The book alone is great however the price is a little ridiculous! Especially since spanish varies in every country so some parts of the book are inconsistant with what we are taught and also their are words spelt incorrectly throughout the book. My professor is constantly correcting it.

This textbook has been excellent in my university classroom. I love the presentation of the material, the matching of grammar with the thematic vocabulary, and the ease of finding topics within the book. It's not perfect--as I don't think any textbook is--but it is definately very good. I have enjoyed teaching from it, although naturally I don't do all of the activities in the book; I pick and choose the ones that I will use in class, and come up with some of my own, creative activities. (Although as a side note, I don't think any teacher should use 100% book activities!)

This is a horrible textbook to use for teaching an online course. My school uses it, and even after 2 years of Spanish in high school, the material is just way to far out there for most students to grasp easily. It starts out assuming a proficiency with Spanish words and sentence structure. The online portion is done at a normal conversation pace for native Spanish speakers, which is far too fast for this level of textbook. There is no way to slow down, or show textually what is being said on most of these online exercises.

The book is the equivalent of dropping you in the middle of Spain and saying "Figure it out".


I've self taught myself far more difficult languages with less trouble than this book is giving me.

Too many useless phrases like "Let me introduce you to my wife" and "how is your day going?" How many non-Spanish speaking travelers are going to be concerned about how someone else's day is going? Sadly, there're not too many survival phrases and necessity words that are essential during traveling. For example, it's missing such concepts as "I'm allergic to milk," or peanuts, or you name it. You won't even see such a common word as "el bano" (restroom) in this book. The author calls it some outdated word that is barely used anywhere. Yes, you can get by with this book if you're not allergic to anything and don't need to use a bathroom, and if your pocket is big enough to squeeze these space-wasting pages along with the maps, documents, money, camera, makeup and other essential things... Do yourself a favor - buy something else!

Well, if this "speaks" to you - then ya get what you pay for. This is the best "diet book" I ever read. The tough love style of depicting the stomach turning facts of the how the whole meat industry work, the references they quote in everything they wrote is very informative. While I do agree with most of the things mentioned in this book. I don't know that it was totally necessary that the writers take the "in your face" approach. I can see why others believe that this is not a good dieting book, and it was misleading since it mentions nowhere that the diet, in order to be a "Skinny Bitch", is to become vegan. I have given it some thought over the years, and if anything this book has made me strongly consider it, but not because of the health aspect. I was literally crying, reading the "You are what you eat" chapter, where they talk about what goes on in the slaughter houses. I think most of us know what occurs in those places, but we don't want to think about it. Rather, we'd prefer to just enjoy our meat and dairy, without considering what happened to the animals who provided it.

This is the worse $12 I have EVER spent! As a marathon runner, extreme healthy eater, personal trainer and someone with a background in healthcare, I was anxious to see what this book had to offer. I forced myself to read to page 64 (thinking it might get better) and eventually had to quit reading. I will not read anymore of this disgusting book and will most likely donate it to a library. The information is completly bogus!! After reading only 3 chapters, I discovered that coffee, milk, protein, and all meat is bad for me.....seriously?? I was shocked at the completly untrue information in this book. I think I will continue to follow my own knowledgable eating habits and stay far, far away from what these women have written.

My experience with this book was rather odd. I read through the first 50 or 75 pages, gave up on it, later picked it up again and skimmed through the next hundred, and then an unexpected thing happened. I literally could not put it down!

The extensive family history given by the main character in this book can easliy be tiresome within the first 200 or so pages, but the book later on caught my interest (and wouldn't let go!) when finally the main character, as a young child, enters the story. The main character's story unfolds as the years pass and adolescence and puberty is reached; eventually a history of a genetic condition - and a truth about the main character - is realized...

I reccommend this book because it is a fairly well written narrative accounting the life of an intersexed child -- it validates and humanizes intersexuality. I loved this book! I loved everything about it. The characters are rich, the story comedic, set against a backdrop of Detroit in the 20th century. Desdemona and Lefty come to America on a dream and a prayer. Their lives as immigrants making a life in the Motor City is full of ups and downs. The lives of their children Milton and Zoe emulate those of second generation Americans who are bound and determined to be only American and leave the old country ways behind.


And then there's Calliope who narrates. We learn the family's story through her or is it his eyes? When Callie tells the story her voice is distinctly different from when the male voice Cal is narrating. The author did a masterful job writing this character's voice. Callie, as a teenager, tells us of Desdemona taking to her bed, permanently. Then Callie and Cal's story really gets interesting. I thought the author had forgotten to resolve Desdemona. There are certain aspects of Middlesex that Jeffrey Eugenides executes to near perfection, while I found that other portions of the novel were a bit rough around the edges.
One of my complaints with this novel is that is Eugenides spends far too long - over two hundred pages - building up the story of Desdemona, Lefty, Milton, and Tessie. While these anecdotes are entertaining and historically accurate, I believe that Eugenides spent a bit too long before truly revealing Calliope to the reader. Granted, the first few pages give a brief biography of Cal, and there are episodes with Cal and Julie sporadically throughout the novel, but the reader is not introduced to the full character until about halfway through the novel. I ordered this brand new, latest addition textbook directly from Amazon (no reseller). The Dos mundos textbook arrived but was missing Quia(tm) (McGraw-Hill single log-in authentication for students). Since the Quia log-in authentication info is missing and it is required in order to access on-line information, the textbook is worthless for my class. I have sent 2 emails to Amazon with no response. This is very poor customer service!

This book does spell out the rules of speaking Spanish quite well, but the vocabulary in the stories is really regional - so much so that sometimes the words aren't even in my Spanish-English dictionary. I suppose this is to be expected but it makes reading the stories a little difficult, and I didn't have this problem in a previous Spanish textbook. This book also occasionally has vosotros things even in assignments, etc, and I'm not really familiar with that form at all - it's not hard to guess though.

"Hamlet" doesn't need any introduction -- the tortured Dane, the ghost, meditations on suicide and a climax full of death. But as well-known as the storyline is, the play itself is what deserves the attention, both for Shakespeare's shadowy plot filled with uncertainty and treachery -- and for his brilliant, immortal writing, which takes on a new dimension when read on the page.

Prince Hamlet of Denmark is understandably upset when, only a short time after his father's death, his mother Gertrude marries his uncle Claudius, who is now the new king. Who wouldn't be unhappy? But when Hamlet encounters the tormented ghost of his father ("I am thy father's spirit/Doom'd for a certain term to walk the night"), he learns that his dad was murdered by his uncle -- but he's plagued by indecision, since he's unsure if the spirit was truly his dad.

"Hamlet" is for everybody, but not for everybody to enjoy equally. The sad truth is I am one of those who have come, through some application, to feel real appreciation for the play, yet never loved it. The fault is mine and not Shakespeare's, but it is an honest fault worth exploring.

The story is pretty straightforward on its face. The king of Denmark has died, and as his son Hamlet fights overwhelming grief, he comes to discover the father died at the hand of his successor, Hamlet's uncle Claudius. As he contemplates the enormity of this knowledge, he wrestles with the fact his friends and court advisors are in league with the uncle. Even Hamlet's mother has compromised her connection with him by marrying Claudius soon after being widowed. Through all this turmoil a cosmic consciousness slowly emerges in young Hamlet.

"There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio/Than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

Just so all of you are aware, Shakespeare was not in the practice of writing "books". He was a playwright, so when you go ahead and say that this "book" was boring, or hard to follow, make sure you realize that what you have in front of you is dialogue never intended to be read by the public, but only seen on stage. This gives the words more power and more accessibility. If someone reads you the To Be or Not To Be soliloquy aloud, you will understand it far better than a first glance at the text.

I would simply state that for many in this day and age, reading Hamlet is a very difficult undertaking. We are not trained in this language, and can hardly tie our attentions down for a 10 line speech, let alone the so-called "ranting" discourses that take place in this play. This does not make the material worse, it makes us inferior to the text. Evaluación: - Another excellent Oxford World's Classics edition
Note that this review refers to the Oxford World's Classics edition of Hamlet. Amazon does a really terrible job of sorting out which editions of Shakespeare plays are the same and which are different, so this review will almost certainly be referred where it does not belong.

This edition, like most of the Oxford World's Classics Shakespeare editions, is outstanding. The introduction is a good solid read and the editor is a very good writer (a quality which, though often overlooked, really makes or breaks an annotated edition). His references and notes are keen and illuminating and occasionally betray a wry sense of humour. Plenty of room in the margins for notes, as I found out taking a ridiculously intense seminar on this play and Joyce's Ulysses this semester. This play is truly Shakespeare's masterpiece, and this edition eminently does it justice.
